4 WHERE AND HOW TO SHARE Apple menu [click] System preferences [click] Internet & network Sharing [click] You will see all sharing options in this centralized place Click on sharing Give a name to your computer [Computer Name] Display name [on the first screen not a network name] but change the default otherwise expect conflict click on edit ->give local hostname [name used by the network] Hostname User/password Xyz.laptop.local No need to restart the computer after these configuration changes 4

8 REMOTE MANAGEMENT Others will manage your computer using IP Screen sharing can be controlled by remote management Remote management Allow access for All users Only these users Configure for local users as well 8

9 CONTROL USERS WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH REMOTE MGMT What these users can do from remote Observe Control Show when being observed Generate reports Open and quit applications Change settings Delete and replace items Send text messages Restart and shut down Copy items 9

10 COMPUTER SETTINGS Remote Management related Show remote management status in menu bar Anyone may request permission to control screen VNC viewers may control screen with password Mac has other software for remote management 10

11 FILE SHARING Mac Off by default [in windows by on by default] Enable it You can select and share folders from here Control user access Control whom you want to shareand how [read, write, full control] Sharing by Afp [windows users can access] FTP SMB [windows users cannot access] Server Message Blocks 11

13 WEB SHARING Mac based on Unix Macs comes with Apache built in User web-site Home->sites [root of local web-sites users] Computer root web-site: Library->web server->documents 13

14 REMOTE LOGIN Built in ssh in terminal [remote login has to be enabled] Remote login -> you can restrict who can do this You can enable only the administrators Better: use remote login with remote management Ssh less bandwidth, faster Trouble shooting can be fast Graphically can be slower Does not interrupt the user 14
