Animated GIFs, can have several animation frames in one graphic file with play instructions so it can show like a flip book. Adobe Photoshop and its companion program Imageready can be used to create the GIF. Select a photo to animate and open it in Photoshop. 37

2 Make the Layers panel visible by selecting "Layers" from the "Window" menu 38

3 Create layers in the document by duplicating and/or selecting and then cutting or copying. One layer should be the Background and should be edited to remove the potions you want to move. The background where the portion is removed is painted the color of the background. Tools: box, select, lasso, magic wand, paint brush, rush, erase, etc. Layers panel: allow ordering, hiding revealing and editing of stacked layers 39

4 The portions that move need to be selected by wand or lasso and with the inverse select remove the background, thus leaving the one portion as a standalone image. Once all portions are selected and isolated into its own layer, the portions can be transformed (e.g. rotated or enlarged) or altered by cutting or painting. The frames are stacked upon each other and manipulated. By moving one portion of the image incrementally each frame, an animation is created. The final animation will have frames that revealed or hidden. 40

5 Display the Animation panel by selecting "Animation" from the "Window" menu or go to the Imageready icon. Open up the animation panel and display the stacked images. Reveal or hide portions as per desired effect. Next create a copy to make a new frame. In this new fame you can move a portion or reveal/ hide images. Create another copy for the next frame and continue to manipulate the various layers of the stacked image. You should now see the layers you created shown as successive, numbered frames. You can reorder the frames by clicking and dragging them. To remove a frame, click it to select it, and then press the trash can button. Adjust the speed of the animation by specifying a time for each frame. This is the amount of time in seconds that the frame will be visible before the next frame is displayed. Click the arrow button in the bottom right corner of the frame to adjust., and then choose a time delay from the drop-down menu that appears Set the loop amount as Once or Forever. Test your animation using the playback controls at the bottom of the Animation panel. You can also click on any frame to jump to that point in the animation. The animation is shown in the document window as it plays back. Open the file menu and choose the "Save for Web & Devices" command or the Save as command and "Save. Next click Save as optimized to convert your file into a.gif. Choose a location and name and then Save to finalize the GIF animation. 41
