2 Adobe Flash CS6 1 Creating a Simple Animated Web Banner Project Planning Guidelines What Is Flash CS6? Flash CS6 is a popular animation software program produced by Adobe Systems Incorporated. Designers use Flash to create movies that can run in Web pages or over a computer network. A Flash movie can be an animated greeting card; a banner advertisement for a Web page, game, cartoon, or stand-alone program; or any other animation intended for use on a Web site, mobile device such as a smartphone, kiosk, or computer. Flash movies are often categorized as Rich Internet Applications (RIAs), which are Internet-accessed programs that incorporate a high level of user interactivity. Rich Internet Applications that are developed with Flash are known as Flash movies. Designers often use Flash CS6 to create audio and video players, which is software that contains buttons to control media actions such as play, pause, back, and forward. For example, video on YouTube plays in a Flash video player in a Web browser and music on Myspace plays with a Flash audio player. Designers also use Flash CS6 to work with image files for tasks that can be performed in other Adobe software (such as Photoshop and Illustrator). Sometimes it is easier to perform basic image editing or conversion tasks in Flash rather than learning or using more specialized image-editing software. Flash CS6 is part of the Adobe Creative Suite 6 and is also sold and used independently as a stand-alone application. Flash CS6 is available for both the PC and Macintosh computer platforms. The chapters in this book use Flash CS6 on the PC platform, running the Windows 7 operating system. To illustrate the features of Flash CS6, this book presents a series of chapters that use Flash to create visually exciting and interactive projects similar to those found on many Web sites. The process of creating an animation or an RIA requires careful analysis and planning. After planning a project with a client and agreeing on the final outcome, begin a Flash project by drawing shapes and creating a background scene. Once the background is designed, create and animate the foreground objects. Then, adjust and perfect the animation as needed. Add interactivity, if it is desired, and then test the movie. Finally, export the movie to a format suitable for the project s use. Each chapter in this book provides practical applications of these planning considerations. Project Morphing Web Banner A Web banner is a generic name for an advertisement on a Web site that encourages a user to click it. When clicked, the user s Web browser usually links to the advertiser s Web site. Many advertisers believe that an animated Web banner catches the attention of users and is more likely to be clicked than a nonanimated advertisement. Creating an animation with vector images rather than bitmap images provides more options to manipulate and control the animation. FL _CH01_REV.indd 2 22/05/12 3:52 PM

3 Adobe Flash CS6 A vector image is a graphic that you can resize with no loss of quality, unlike a bitmap image, which becomes blurry when enlarged. Organizations of all kinds, from large corporations to small businesses, schools, rock bands, and sports teams, all need to use images or logos in a variety of scenarios. Some of these usages include Web sites, letterhead, marketing materials, product packaging, and billboards. Often, an organization s logo is available only as a bitmap. Flash can convert a bitmap to a vector. Additionally, Flash has the ability to create morphing animations, in which one image appears to melt and turn into another image. This technique creates a highly visual and interesting animation perfect for use on a Web site. The project in this chapter uses Flash to convert two bitmap images into vector images. After converting the images, you create an animation in which the first image, a guitar, blends, or morphs into the second image, the logo. Figure 1 1a displays the initial state of the vector animation. Figure 1 1b displays the animation partway through the morphing process. Figure 1 1c shows the final state of the animation. The conversion from bitmap to vector requires the use of many Flash CS6 skills, including importing and tracing bitmaps, making selections, working with color, working with layers, and exporting (or publishing) the final work. Creating a morphing animation requires a basic understanding of Flash objects, the Timeline, keyframes, and tweening. Once you have converted the bitmap to vector artwork, you will add a morphing animation. The project will be completed by performing these general tasks: Customize the workspace. Import and trace a bitmap. Insert a keyframe. Insert a shape tween. Export a vector image. Publish a Web graphic. Use Flash Help. General Project Guidelines When converting a bitmap to a vector and creating a morphing animation, the actions you perform and decisions you make will affect the appearance and characteristics of the finished product. As you perform the conversion and create the animation, you should follow these general guidelines: 1. Determine the best file format for the image. If an image will need to be enlarged, it will need to be in a vector format. If the image is meant for use only on a computer screen without being animated, a bitmap format might be appropriate. 2. Find an appropriate image or photo. The more detail or color gradient in the original image, the more difficult it will be to convert it to a vector image with satisfying results. Keep in mind how the image will appear in a small format, like on a business card, and what it will look like in a larger version, such as on a banner or billboard. 3. Determine an appropriate length of time for the animation. Animation can occur in a fraction of a second or over several minutes. Make the animation long enough so your viewers have time for it to register, but not so long that it becomes tedious to watch. 4. Plan keyframes. With the length of the animation determined, plan the placement of keyframes accordingly. Typically, Flash animations run 24 frames per second with keyframes assigned at transitional parts of the animation. 5. Plan export formats in preparation for publication. Export the vector artwork in a format appropriate for use in dedicated vector artwork software. Publish the animation in a format appropriate for its delivery method, such as for use on a Web site, mobile device, or stand-alone desktop application. When necessary, more specific details concerning the above guidelines are presented at appropriate points in the chapter. The chapter also will identify the actions performed and decisions made regarding these guidelines during the creation of the edited images shown in Figure 1 1. To Start Flash Starting Flash If you are using a computer to step through the project in this chapter, and you want your screen to match the figures in this book, you should change your screen s resolution to (Adobe recommends a minimum screen resolution of for Flash.) For information about how to change a screen s resolution, see Appendix C, the Changing Screen Resolution and Resetting General Preferences appendix at the back of this book. The following steps, which assume Windows 7 is running, start Flash, based on a typical installation. You may need to ask your instructor how to start Flash for your computer _CH01_REV.indd 4

What is a maximized window? A maximized window fills the entire screen. When you maximize a window, the Maximize button changes to a Restore Down button. Flash does not open a blank or default file automatically; rather, the Application bar appears across the top of the screen with a gray work area below. By default, the gray work area displays a menu for creating new documents. This menu disappears when a file is opened or created. The Tools panel and other panels are displayed on the right. The Timeline is a panel that appears below the work area. The gray work area and panels are referred to collectively as the workspace. The workspace can be customized to display only the panels you want. Panels, which are containers for various commands and tools, can also be moved from their default locations and positioned where you like. This is a good way to optimize your Flash environment so that you can work as efficiently as possible. You can save or reset altered workspaces to the default settings using the Workspace Switcher in the Application bar. As you work in Flash, the panels and the selected tool might change in location and appearance from the default settings. Therefore, if you want your screen to match the figures in this book, you should restore the default workspace and select the default tool. For more information about how to change other advanced Flash settings, see Appendix B, the Using Flash CS6 Help appendix. Because of a default preference setting, each time you start Flash, the Flash workspace is displayed the same way it appeared the last time you used Flash. If you or another user relocates the panels while working with Flash, then they will appear in their new locations the next time you start Flash. You can create and save your own workspaces, or use Flash s saved workspaces that show a group of panels used for certain tasks. For example, the Animator workspace displays the panels on both the left and right sides of the work area many of those panels are hidden by default in other workspaces. You will learn more about panels later in this chapter. If you want to return the workspace to its default settings, you can use the following steps each time you start Flash. The default workspace, called Essentials, displays commonly used panels. The following steps select the Essentials workspace. 1 Click the Workspace Switcher button on the Application bar to display the names of saved workspaces (Figure 1 4). I Experiment Click each of the workspaces that are displayed in the list to view the different panel configurations. What does the New Workspace command do? The New Workspace command displays a dialog box where Figure 1 5 you can create a new workspace based on the currently displayed panels. You also can add the current keyboard shortcuts and menus to the new workspace. 3 Click Reset Essentials to restore the workspace to its default settings and reposition any panels that might have been moved (Figure 1 6). My screen did not change. Did I do something wrong? If Flash is a new installation on your system, you might notice few changes, if any, on your screen. Creating a New Document panels in default locations Figure 1 6 Flash can create many different types of files, including ActionScript (for general use on Web sites), Adobe AIR (for developing desktop applications), iphone OS (for creating Apple iphone games and apps), and Flash Lite (for game and app development on non-apple mobile devices). This book focuses on the use of Flash for general Web site use, so you will use the ActionScript file type throughout this book. Flash CS6 offers two different versions of ActionScript files: ActionScript 2.0, which is the older version used for backward compatibility, and ActionScript 3.0, which is the current version. 8 FL 8 Flash Chapter 1 Creating a Simple Animated Web Banner When you create an ActionScript file, Flash creates a file with an.fla file extension. This file is referred to as an FLA (pronounced eff-el-ay ) file. It is considered a source file because it is the file used to generate other files that are actually used on Web sites. The general workflow is this: 1. Develop movie. 2. Export movie. 3. Edit original movie. 4. Re-export movie. 5. Add exported movie to Web site. The Flash developer works on an FLA file in Flash to develop the application. The developer then publishes, or exports, a Web-friendly version of the complete application. This exported file has a.swf file extension and is called a SWF (pronounced swiff ) file. If the developer must later make changes to the application on the Web site, the changes are made in the FLA file, and the developer generates a new SWF file and copies it to the Web site. If you have worked with Adobe Photoshop before, you will notice that an FLA file is similar to a PSD file (the native Photoshop file type) and the SWF is similar to a JPG or GIF (Web-friendly file). To Create a New ActionScript 3.0 Document The following steps create a new Flash document using the ActionScript 3.0 file type. 1 Click File on the Application bar to display the File menu (Figure 1 7). The following sections discuss these components. The Application Bar Figure 1 10 The Application bar appears at the top of the screen (Figure 1 11). The Application bar is a toolbar that displays the Flash menu names. Each menu contains a list of commands you can use to perform tasks such as opening, saving, and closing files and modifying objects in your document. To display a menu, such as the View menu, click the View menu name on the Application bar. If you point to a command on a menu that has an arrow on its right edge, as shown in Figure 1 11, a submenu, or secondary menu, displays another list of related commands. On the right side of the Application bar are the Workspace Switcher button, the Search box for Adobe Community Help, and the Access CS Live button _CH01_REV.indd 10

The Tools panel is a group of tools, or buttons, organized into a vertical toolbar. You can choose to hide or show the Tools panel, and you can drag it to a new location on your screen. Each tool on the Tools panel displays a button. When you point to the tool icon, a tool tip displays the name of the tool, including its shortcut key. You can expand some tools to show hidden tools beneath them. Expandable tools display a small triangle in the lower-right corner of the tool icon. Click and hold the tool button or right-click to see or select one of its hidden tools from the context menu. The default tool names and their corresponding shortcut keys are listed in Figure _CH01_REV.indd 11

When using a tool from the Tools panel, the mouse pointer changes to reflect the selected tool. The Tools panel is organized by purpose. At the top of the panel are the selection and transformation tools, followed by vector tools, then miscellaneous tools, and finally the navigation tools. At the bottom of the Tools panel are buttons to set colors, followed by tool modifier buttons that change depending on which tool is selected. Some tools do not display any additional buttons in this area. As each tool is introduced throughout this book, its function and Properties panel options will be explained further _CH01_REV.indd 12

14 FL 14 Flash Chapter 1 Creating a Simple Animated Web Banner Document Window Tab Flash displays a document window tab at the top of the document window that shows the name of the file and a Close button. If you have multiple files open in Flash, each has its own document window tab. You can move the document window by dragging its document window tab, or dock it again by dragging it near the Application bar. When floating, the document tab expands across the top of the document window and displays Minimize, Restore Down, and Close buttons. Edit Bar Just under the document window tab, Flash displays the document window edit bar. On the left side of the edit bar, Flash displays the name of the current scene. A complex Flash animation might contain multiple scenes; having the name of the current scene displayed in the edit bar indicates where you are in your Flash file. The right side of the edit bar contains the Edit Scene button, which is used to switch between scenes; the Edit Symbols button, which is used to select a symbol for editing; and the magnification box. Magnification refers to the percentage of enlargement or reduction on the screen. For example, a 50% indication in the magnification box means the entire stage is displayed at 50 percent of its actual size. Changing the magnification does not change the physical size of the components on the stage; it merely displays it on the screen at a different size. You can type a new percentage in the magnification box to display a different view of the stage. Stage The stage is the portion of the document window that displays what will be visible on the screen when users view your Flash movie. Think of it like a canvas or a piece of paper on which to draw. You perform most tool tasks and edit the shapes and objects in the stage. By default, the stage is white, but you can change it to any background color you desire. Work Area The work area is the gray portion of the document window surrounding the stage. It is used as a storage area to place objects that might enter an animation from off screen or completely exit the screen at the end of an animation. Additionally, you can place objects partially on the stage and partially on the work area so that they appear clipped in the final version of the project. Scroll Bars Scroll bars appear on the right and bottom of the document window. When the stage is bigger than the document window, the scroll bars become active and display scroll arrows and scroll boxes to move the image up, down, left, and right. Panels A panel is a collection of graphically displayed choices and commands, which can include specific tool settings, colors, or animation details (Figure 1 15). Panels help you monitor and modify your work. Each panel displays a panel tab with the name of the panel and a panel menu button. By default, Flash displays the Library and Properties panels when you start the program. When you click the panel menu button, also called the panel menu icon, Flash displays a context-sensitive menu that allows you to make changes to the panel. Some panels have a status bar across the bottom. A panel can display buttons, boxes, sliders, scroll bars, or drop-down lists _CH01_REV.indd 14

Some panels are expanded to display their contents and are grouped by general purpose. A panel group or tab group displays several panels horizontally, joined by a title bar. Panels are collapsed when they appear as a button or expanded when they display their contents. Panels are minimized when they display only their tab. To collapse or expand a panel, click the double arrow in the panel s title bar. To minimize a panel, double-click its tab. To close a panel, click Close on the panel menu. To redisplay the panel, click the panel name on the Window menu or use a panel shortcut key. You can arrange and reposition panels either individually or in groups. To move them individually, drag their tabs; to move a group, drag the area to the right of the tabs. To float a panel in the workspace, drag its tab outside of the vertical docking. You can create a stack of floating panels by dragging a panel tab to a location below another floating panel and docking it. Panels can be docked on any side of the stage, though the Essentials workspace only docks panels to the right and below the stage by default. Flash comes with more than 30 panels, many of which are used to access advanced features. As each panel is introduced throughout this book, its function and characteristics will be explained further _CH01_REV.indd 15

Click the Library panel tab to expand the Library panel group (Figure 1 16). Where did the Collapse to Icons button go? The Collapse to Icons button and Expand Panels button are in the same location and are essentially the same button. They toggle back and forth depending on whether a panel group is collapsed or expanded. 17 Saving Documents Creating a Simple Animated Web Banner Flash Chapter 1 FL 17 The three most important rules of computing are save, save, and save! Do not wait until a movie is completely finished before saving. Save periodically as you work so if your computer crashes or the power goes out, you do not lose all of your progress. Flash has the ability to automatically save your file every few minutes, but this option is disabled by default. You might not want to save after performing certain steps if you are just experimenting, so saving manually rather than automatically gives you total control over when your progress is saved. Flash Chapter 1 To Save a Flash Document Q&A Q&A You have begun creating this movie and do not want to risk losing work completed thus far. Accordingly, you should save the file. The following steps save the movie on a USB flash drive using the file name, Rock Academy Vector Logo. Even though you have yet to edit the Flash movie, it is a good practice to save the file on your personal storage device early in the process. 1 With a USB flash drive connected to one of the computer s USB ports, click File on the Application bar to display the File menu (Figure 1 19). Do I have to save to a USB flash drive? No. You can save to any device or folder. A folder is a specific location on a storage medium. You can save to the default folder or a different folder. What if my USB flash drive has a different name or letter? It is very likely that your USB flash drive will have a different name and drive letter and be connected to a different port. Do not press the enter key after typing the file name. Save As dialog box Q&A Q&A Click Computer in the left pane of the Save As dialog box to display the list of available drives. (Figure 1 20). What if the Save As dialog box does not display a left pane? The left pane might be hidden. Click the Browse Folders button (Save As dialog box) to display the left pane. What if I do not see Computer in the left pane? You might have to scroll down in the left pane to see the Computer button. 3 Double-click Removable Disk (F:), or the name of your USB flash drive, in the list of available storage devices to select that drive as the new save location. Click the New Folder button on the Save As dialog box toolbar to create a new folder on the selected storage device. When the new folder appears, type Chapter 01 to change the name of the folder, and then press the enter key to save the name (Figure 1 21). How do I know that the project is saved? Your USB drive might have a light that flashes during the save process. The benefit to this is that you don t have to remember to continually save your work. If your computer crashes or loses power before you save, all unsaved work is lost. However, when the auto-save feature is enabled, you are no longer in control of the save points the point at which your file was last saved. This can cause problems when trying to undo all changes in a file to the last saved state. You might want to undo all recent changes if you perform several steps and decide you don t like what you did. The Revert command is used to undo all changes and revert the file back to the last saved state. If you think there is ever a chance you might want to revert a document, you should disable the auto-save feature in Flash. This option, which is called Auto-Recovery, is part of the General preferences accessible from the Edit menu on the Application bar. The following steps disable the Auto-Recovery feature so that you can later use the Revert command. 1 Click Edit on the Application bar to display the Edit menu (Figure 1 25). 2 Click Preferences on the Edit menu to display the Preferences dialog box. For a detailed example of this procedure using the Mac operating system, refer to the steps on pages APP 22 through APP 23 of the For Mac Users appendix at the back of this book. A bitmap graphic is composed of pixels, which are tiny dots of light that combine to form the image you see on a computer monitor. Photos from a digital camera or images copied to a computer from a scanner are examples of bitmap graphics. The bitmap format is an excellent choice for photos because it can reproduce the high level of detail needed by a photo. In fact, images from a digital camera or scanner always begin as bitmap graphics, or bitmaps. However, enlarging bitmap graphics results in significant loss of quality. As you enlarge a bitmap graphic, it becomes blurry and jagged. JPG, GIF, PNG, and TIF are all common bitmap formats. In comparison, a vector graphic is created with points and curves based on a mathematical formula. Points are placed a certain distance apart and Flash calculates a curve that connects the points. Logos, line drawings, or artwork with large areas of flat nongradient color are good choices for vector graphics. EPS, SVG, AI, and FXG are all common vector formats. Unlike bitmaps, vectors can be enlarged with no loss of quality. Enlarged vectors remain sharp, clean, and in focus. Flash is designed to work primarily with vector artwork _CH01_REV.indd 21

22 FL 22 Flash Chapter 1 Creating a Simple Animated Web Banner Plan Ahead Determine the best file format for the image. Vector graphics allow for more animated manipulation than bitmap graphics. Before drawing a vector graphic from scratch, you should import a bitmap version and convert it to a vector. Converting a bitmap is also called tracing. Q&A To Import a Bitmap Converting Bitmaps to Vectors At times, you will need to convert a bitmap to a vector. For example, you might need a large version of a logo for a newsletter or billboard advertisement, or you just might need to animate a logo in Flash to have it grow from a small to a large size. If you do not have a vector version of the logo instead you just have a client s letterhead with the logo you can scan the logo, save it as a bitmap, and then convert the bitmap to a vector, which allows you to resize it as needed. If your client provides you an electronic version of the logo (a JPG or GIF file), you also will have to convert it to vector format. The first step in the process of converting the bitmap to a vector is to import the bitmap into a Flash document. The following steps open the Rockacademy file from the Data Files for Students and import it to the Flash stage. Because the Rockacademy file is a bitmap, you will later need to convert it to a vector. 1 Click File on the Application bar to display the File menu. Point to Import on the File menu to display the Import submenu (Figure 1 27). What if I do not have the Data Files for Students? You will need the Data Files for Students to complete the activities and exercises in this book. See the inside back cover for instructions on downloading the Data Files for Students, or see your instructor for information about accessing the required files. 25 Q&A To Resize the Stage Creating a Simple Animated Web Banner Flash Chapter 1 FL 25 By default, Flash creates new documents with a stage size of pixels and a background color of white. You can view and change these characteristics using the Properties panel. You should set the stage size before you begin creating your movie because once the stage dimensions change, objects might no longer fit on the stage. Although you can change the stage dimensions at any time, it is more efficient to set it correctly the first time. You should know the dimensions of your target device or application ahead of time. For example, if you are developing a game to be played in a Web browser, you might set the stage dimensions to pixels so that it will fit on most screens without having to use scroll bars. If you are developing an application for the iphone, stage dimensions set to are appropriate. If you are simply developing an animated greeting card, advertisement, or other Flash movie to display in a Web browser, you will have to know how the Flash movie fits into the overall Web page design. In the case of bitmap-to-vector conversion, it is a good practice to match the stage dimensions to that of the imported bitmap. The following steps resize the stage to fit the imported bitmap. 1 Look at the Properties panel and note the dimensions of the imported bitmap (Figure 1 32). How can I tell what the dimensions are? Click in the gray work area outside the stage to deselect the imported bitmap. What if my magnification level does not match the figure in the book? Your magnification level does not need to match. The magnification level is dependent on your screen size and resolution. As long as you double-clicked the Hand Tool to autofit the stage to your screen, you are fine. To Save the File with the Same Name 1 The following step saves the Flash document. Tracing a bitmap converts the pixel data into vector data (points, curves, and mathematical formulas). The quality of results can vary greatly from almost near-perfect photographic reproduction to a stylized pop art type effect (Figure 1 36 on the next page). There is no scientific formula that you can apply to achieve your desired results. The process is very much trial and error. The settings in Table 1 1 are recommended for high-quality photographic reproduction. Flash has four settings that you can adjust when tracing a bitmap to achieve your results (Figure 1 37 on the next page). Hand Tool button _CH01_REV.indd 27

The lower the number, the more colors that are reproduced. However, lower numbers result in larger files and longer conversion times. Be careful not to set the number too low. If the original bitmap contains millions of colors, and you try to reproduce them all, Flash may display an error informing you there are too many colors and you will have to try again with a higher value. For photographic reproduction, use low numbers such as 10 or below if possible. For a pop-art or techno look, use high numbers _CH01_REV.indd 28

29 Creating a Simple Animated Web Banner Flash Chapter 1 FL 29 Minimum Area The Minimum area setting determines how large of an area Flash examines when deciding which color to use when converting a pixel. For example, a setting of 8 tells Flash to start at the current pixel and use the colors of all pixels within an 8-pixel radius to determine the final color of the pixel. In other words, it is like telling Flash to ignore a pixel s neighbors or pay attention to them. For photographic reproduction, use a low number such as 1 so that neighboring pixels are ignored. Corner Threshold The Corner threshold setting controls whether sharp edges are retained or smoothed out. For photographic reproduction, use the Many Corners option. Curve Fit The Curve fit setting determines how smoothly outlines are drawn. For photographic reproduction, use the Pixels option. Be warned! Using low values for both the Color threshold and Minimum area settings can result in Flash appearing to freeze as your computer s processor is being overworked trying to accomplish the conversion. If that happens, you need to either be patient as Flash finishes or force Flash to close using the Windows Task Manager. Depending on your computer s power, it might take up to 30 minutes to convert a large bitmap to a photographic quality vector using very low settings. To Trace a Bitmap The following steps trace the Rockacademy bitmap graphic and convert it to vector artwork for use in the animation. 1 If necessary, click the Selection Tool button on the Tools panel to select it. Press ctrl+s to save the document (Figure 1 42). Flash Shapes and Symbols Anything on the Flash stage is an object, including text, bitmaps, traced bitmaps, lines, circles, and rectangles. Objects are categorized as either shapes or symbols. Shapes and symbols each have different properties and capabilities, as you will learn in this book. In the remainder of this section, you will work with shapes. Symbols are covered in Chapter 3. When you trace a bitmap, converting it to a vector, Flash interprets the result as a collection of shapes (rather than a symbol). One characteristic of a shape is that it is color-based. Simply clicking a shape selects all contiguous areas of the same color. Tiny gray dots covering a shape indicate it is selected (Figure 1 43). However, if you drag a shape to a new location on the stage and then deselect it, the shape merges with other shapes of the same color, destroying the underlying pixels. For this reason, you must be very careful when selecting and moving shapes. To deselect shapes, click the gray work area outside the stage. You will learn more about animation as you work with shapes and symbols throughout this book.
