1 Job Code: 1202 Job Title: CHIEF SUSTAINABILITY DIRECTOR, DISTRICT FLSA: Exempt Employee Group: Management, Administration, Technical Pay Grade: 18 Effective Date: 2015 Nov 18 Revised Date: 2015 Nov 18 JOB SUMMARY Directs, develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates districtwide sustainability initiatives and programs in order to ensure compliance with institutional commitments, federal or state regulations and to promote and establish consistent, comprehensive and systemic sustainable institutional practices. Develops and executes strategies to address sustainability initiatives and programs; develops methodologies to assess the viability or success of initiatives/programs. SCOPE This is a District Office position that works in the area of Business Services in environmental/green initiatives. Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, students, community agencies, other institutions of higher education and the public. Equipment used includes standard office equipment, computer hardware and software. SUPERVISION RECEIVED This position reports to the Vice Chancellor of Business Services; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters and specific instructions regarding non?routine and sensitive matters. 2 SUPERVISION EXERCISED May supervise assigned staff or provide leadwork direction to staff assigned through a project. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Develops, promotes, coordinates, implements and maintains the One Maricopa sustainability strategy across the Maricopa County Community College District; partners with the communities MCCCD serves (including all current existing college and district-wide initiatives); applies the adopted Triple Bottom Line model (a holistic model that guides decisions and aligns actions related to achieving goals of economic feasibility, social equity and environmental responsibility); creates reductions in the District s carbon footprint, energy and water use as well as improvements in social equity and economic feasibility (including resource conservation and management, climate conservation (carbon footprint), transportation planning and incentives, and instructions/education). Directs, plans and increases districtwide effectiveness and impact, alignment and consistency of a wide variety of sustainable practices, standards, projects and programs through centralized oversight and coordination; promotes and expands environmentally viable, economically robust and socially just and equitable business practices internally and externally; leads MCCCD to promote, achieve and exceed national benchmark sustainability standards; ensures compliance with all standards related to Maricopa s role as a national leader, such as the Climate Leadership Network (formerly American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment - ACUPCC); identifies, develops and maintains related organizational affiliations and memberships at local, state and national levels including ongoing assessment of their value to Maricopa and beyond. Page 2 Researches, forecasts, reports and advocates trends, challenges and opportunities for all elements of the district interest in sustainability; educates and promotes integration of the Triple Bottom Line model across Maricopa business practices and curriculum and pedagogy planning and development, as well as its application with business, education, government partners; coordinates, communicates and collaborates with executive leadership, employees and students across the district, translating technical information to lay language in order to ensure that all are informed, aligned and implement the Maricopa Sustainability Action Plan. Directs the oversight, maintenance and improvement of the District Sustainability Website; creates and implements educational campaigns and activities which promote sustainability among all Maricopa students, employees and community partners. Coordinates and provides staff support to the Sustainability Action Council (SAC) or its successor and represents the Sustainability Committee (SC or its successor) on

3 the Council; plans, coordinates and carries out the Annual Chancellor s Sustainability Summit; reports annually to SAC and SC regarding Maricopa s progress against goals; serves on a variety of other committees as assigned. Serves as point of contact for vendors providing districtwide sustainability programs, which may include managing or co-managing or coordinating with other Maricopa leaders their work and assuring compliance with contract requirements; serves as district spokesperson on sustainability to internal and external constituencies; develops, administers and monitors the department and/or project budgets; may supervise, hire, train, and evaluate assigned staff and may provide work direction to staff performing work on sustainability projects. Performs other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: District operations, policies, administrative regulations and business cycles in order to successfully integrate sustainability initiatives into these for implementation; Sustainability principles, practices and theories and their application to higher education; Resource conservation and sustainability practices; Principles, practices, methods and techniques of strategic planning, forecasting and critical thinking; Practices for identifying, collecting, and monitoring carbon emission; Strategies for working with communities to increase resiliency and awareness; Principles and methods of curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction and the measurement of training effects; Project management skills and processes; Affiliation with and awareness of national and international organizations that promote the Triple Bottom Line model of sustainability; Management and supervisory principles and practices; Budget development and administration. 4 solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems; Supervising and managing staff and resources in planning and delivering services including providing work direction to those assigned to a project; Executing strategy to achieve organizational and departmental goals. Ability to: Communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties. Be a master collaborator who will work effectively in relationship building and garner trust with departments involving diverse types of employees ranging from faculty to administrators in diverse work units and colleges/district divisions to gain consensus on directions and advance and implement initiatives; Work with district executives and Governing Board members; Create a systemic sustainability approach in order to achieve goals; Work independently yet collaboratively with many others outside the work unit; Obtain and maintain accurate records; develop educational materials and reports; Interpret and communicate best practices, regulations and policies; Display excellent organizational skills, as demonstrated by experience in organizing the work of others, or organizing multiple or complex projects, managing multiple schedules and deadlines. Education Experience A Bachelor s degree in a related field (Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or a related field to environmental issues/sustainability) and six (6) years of experience managing/implementing environmental or sustainability programs that includes experience with community-based social marketing programs to promote sustainable behavior change and targeted initiatives that create robust and replicable results. OR, Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.
