1 CREATING A NEWSLETTER IN ADOBE DREAMWEAVER CS5 (step-by-step directions) Step 1 - DEFINE A NEW WEB SITE - 5 POINTS 1. From the welcome window that opens select the Dreamweaver Site... or from the main menu, select Site > New Site 2. Enter your site name (Choose any name that will help you to identify your web site) and browse to and select your site folder. Click Select and then click Save 3. The web site is created. Step 2 - Creating a new web page, adding page properties 5 POINTS 1. From the Main Menu, choose File > New. New Document dialog box opens. Choose Blank Page Category and choose HTML as a Page type.
2 2. Click Create. New blank page appears in the document window. 3. From the main Menu, choose File> Save As.. Name the file news_release.html. Click Save (CTRL+S). 4. Add the page title and meta tags. In the Document Toolbar (at the top of the document window) locate Title: input box and enter: News Release Vol. q, October 1, 2010 (as shown below) 5. Select the Common tab in the Insert bar and click the Head:Meta drop-down arrow. Choose Description from the list. 6. Enter the following description: My Company Name Newsletter 2001 Qtr 3 Alternative method: In Code view (click the CODE tab) type the following within the <head> tag, adding your name, your description, and keywords that pertain to your newsletter
3 <head> <title>newsletter 2011 Qtr 3</title> <meta name="description" content="my Company Name Newsletter 2001 Qtr 3" /> </head> Step 3 - Adding and formatting page heading - <h1> - 10 POINTS 1. Add the page heading. Click CTRL+1 and type: NetSpark Web conference or Your Company Name Newsletter Qtr 3 2. Set CSS styles for <h1> tags. In the CSS STYLES panel (if you don t see this panel, choose Window from the main menu and choose CSS Styles) click the New CSS Rule icon (+ icon). The New CSS Style window opens. 3. Choose selector type: Tag. Enter the h1 as a Selector Name. Set the Rule Definition as a New Style Sheet File. (Settings are shown below)
4 4. Click OK. Dreamweaver will prompt you to name the css file. Name it news.css. 5. Click Save. 6. The New Rule definition dialog box opens. Establish the font settings as shown below:
5 7. Select the Box Category. If you accidently closed the window, you can reopen it by clicking the Edit Rule.. button (Located at the bottom of the CSS STYLES panel the pencil icon. Alternatively, you can double-click the h1 rule in the panel. In the Box category, set the Width to 330px. 8. Select the Border category. Uncheck the Same for all check box for all three values and set the bottom border to double, 3px, set the border color to #C85C15 or your preferred color.
6 9. Click OK to accept the settings. Step 4 Inserting Graphics 5 POINTS 1. Place you mouse cursor immediately below the <h1> element (You may want to switch to the Code view to double check the position of your insertion point) 2. From the main menu, select Insert >Image, choose the image; enter the alt text in Image Tag Accessibility dialog box. (I used the webpros.jpg file) Step 5 - Inserting a <div> tag and creating custom class selector - 10 POINTS 1. Make sure that your insertion point is located right below the image. From the main menu select Insert > Layout Object > DIV tag. The Insert Div tag dialog box appears. 2. Enter the name of the class info_bar
7 3. Click OK. A new <div> placeholder appears in the document window. 4. With the new div selected in the Design View, click the New CSS style button (+ icon) in the CSS STYLES panel. 5. The New CSS Rule dialog box appears. The.info_bar is specified as a class selector 6. Click OK. 7. In the dialog box that appears set the following properties for the Font category: Font-weight:bold; Font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif
8 Color: #FFFFFF (of any desired color) 8. Select the Background category 9. Select the Box category. Set the Width to 550px and Height to 20px. 10. Uncheck the Same for all check box for the Padding property and set the padding: top to 4px, bottom to 4px, left and right to 20px (as shown below)
9 11. Select the Background category. Set the Background color to #C85C Remove the text placeholder and enter the number and the date of press release. Step 6 - Creating main content block, using an ID selector 10 POINTS 1. Add another <div> tag. Make sure that your mouse pointer is placed below the <div class= info_bar ></div> element. 2. From the main menu, select Insert > Layout Object > DIV tag. The Insert DIV tag dialog box appears. 3. Enter the name for a new ID content (as shown below)
10 4. In the CSS STYLES panel click the New CSS Rule button (+ icon). A new CSS rule dialog box appears with the ID #conent preselected. 5. Click OK to open the New Rule definition dialog box. 6. Select the Box category and set the Width property to 570px; set the Padding property to 10px (the Same for all sides). Click OK. 7. Insert mouse pointer inside the div #content and remove the placeholder text. Type the headline for the news, such as Do you Know? Select this text. From the Properties panel (below the document window) click the Format drop-down arrow and choose Heading Create your own style for the <h2>. Set font size and color properties for this element. 9. Enter two or three paragraphs the Press release lead. Remember, each time you press Enter, a new paragraph appears on the page. If you would like to enter a line break, press and hold Shift + Enter. 10. Enter at least one unordered list. To do so, Click Enter once to create a new paragraph. In the Properties panel (at the bottom) click the Bullets icon (Unordered list) and start typing first list item. Create a new list item by pressing Enter. To complete the list, click Enter twice. Step 7 Adding graphical button 10 POINTS 1. Place your mouse pointer below the text in the #content block. From the main menu, select Insert >Image. Select the register.png button from the images folder. Add the alternative text: Register now! Click OK to insert image. 2. Select the image on the page. In the Properties panel locate the Link input box. Enter the link to SCF web site (You can create a link to any related to your web site resource) and click Enter. Set Target to _blank and border to 0(zero):
11 3. Add another paragraph after the register button. Step 8 - Adding bottom bar, using class info_bar - 5 POINTS 1. Place mouse pointer after the end of the main content section (after <div id= container > </div>) 2. From the main menu, choose Insert > Layout Object > DIV tag. In the Insert DIV tag dialog box that appears, type the name of the Class selector: info_bar (as shown below). 4. Click OK. The bar identical to the top bar appears at the bottom of the page. Step 9 Adding hyperlinks - 5 POINTS 1. Remove the placeholder text and type : Visit our Website 2. Select this text. In the Properties panel enter index.html in the Link input box. Click Enter to complete the link. Step 10 Adding link to 5 POINTS 3. Add the link to the address. In the Insert panel click the Common. In the Common bar, click the link (envelope) icon
12 4. The Link window opens. 5. Enter the text for the link - us. Enter 6. Click OK to complete the link. Step 11 Styling links 10 POINTS 1. Place your mouse pointer over one of the links in the info_bar and click the link 2. In the CSS STYLES panel click the New CSS Rule icon (+ icon). In the New CSS Rule window enter the following Selector Name:.info_bar a:link,.info_bar a:visited (as shown below):
13 3. Click OK 4. In the Type category, set your preferred color (provide good contrast between background color and the text) 5. Click OK. 6. Click any hyperlink in the info bar again. Click the New CSS Rule icon (+ icon). In the New CSS Rule dialog box enter the following Selector Name:.info_bar a:hover (shown below)
14 7. Click OK. 8. Select the Type category. Set the color that would provide a high contrast between text and background Step 12 - Adding DIV wrapper 10 POINTS To give your page the finished look, set the width to the entire page content and create a border around page content. To do this, place a DIV tag around the entire page content. 1. Switch to the code view by clicking the Code tab at the top of the document window. 2. Locate the opening <body> tag and enter <div id= wrapper > tag as shown: <body> <div id="wrapper"> <h1>netspark Web Conference</h1> 3. Add closing </div> tag before </body> closing tag: </div> </body> 4. Switch to the Design view. 5. In the CSS STYLES Panel, click the New CSS Rule icon (+). In the New CSS Rule dialog box enter Selector Name: #wrapper 7. Click OK. 8. In the CSS Rule Definition dialog box, set your preferred settings for Font, such as Verdana, Arial, sans-serif, font-size: 0.9em
15 9. Select Background category. Set you background-image: click Browse and select the image, such as map.gif. 10. Set Repeat to no-repeat. 11. Background position: 250px (x) 350px (y) 12. Select the Border Category. Set border to solid, 1px wide, color to (the same for all sides) 13. Select the Box Category. Set the Width property to 590px. 14. Click OK to apply. his is a newsletter. This means there must be several paragraphs of text. Feel free to make up your own text, but make it relevant to your site. Save both the CSS and HTML files. Select File > Save All. Preview the page in a web browser. Step 13 VALIDATE YOUR CODE with validator.w3.org 10 POINTS Make sure you meet all the grading criteria listed on the Newsletter link on the online syllabus. Upload the two files: the.html and.css to your web server. Submit the URL through the Angel Dropbox.
