2 Editorial Dear Collegues, In view of the long tradition of Classics and Innovations in endourology here in Mannheim and in, we cordially invite you to attend the Annual Meeting of the Mannheim Center of Endourology during the cosy German Advent Season of This year the worldwide fi rst interventional Uro-CT, which is installed in the Mannheim Center of Endourology for endourological procedures, will be presented for the fi rst time. On the Thursday and Friday, well-known international specialists in the fi eld of endourology and imaging will present and discuss the hot topics of the year Besides this, we will be offering you Classic Live-Surgery for educational purposes as well as innovative surgery using the latest technologies and procedures. This is fl anked by state-ofthe-art lectures on the theme of Step by Step How I do it, given by top-specialists in endourology and imaging. The highlights of this meeting will be debates on current topics in the fi eld of endourology and imaging. The Peter Alken Lecture, the Perez-Castro Lecture, the Christian Chaussy Lecture and the Wolfgang Mauermayer Lecture, will provide a Masterclass school and a stimulating vision of percutaneous and retrograde access, as well as shock wave and TUR. The Congress language is English. Simultaneous translation into Russian, Italian and Turkish will also be provided for your convenience. The meeting will be accredited with 16 CME points. At the famous Onyx Bar in Mannheim we will host a Welcome Reception on Wednesday night. On Thursday evening we will spent a wonderful evening at Urology on Ice, with the exclusive opportunity of ice-skating and curling directly at the Christmas Market area. 9 CHRISTIAN G. CHAUSSY Lecture CHRISTIAN G. CHAUSSY MD, HonFRCSEd Born January 1945, Christian Chaussy graduated from Medical School at Ludwig-Maximian-University (LMU) in Munich, in He received his Medical Degree in 1972 followed by the Doctorate in Medicine for his studies of motility and temperature of an extracorporeally haemoperfused intestinal segment. Also in 1972 he started his scientifi c career and became staffmember in the Institute for Surgical Research, LMU. His main interest during this time was the research in Transplantation Immunology with special focus on Xenotransplantation. For this work he received in 1975, together with Claus Hammer, the Langenbeck Award of the German Surgical Society. In 1975 he worked several months with Sir Roy Y. Calne, the transplantation legend, in Cambridge. After his return to Munich he founded, together with Walter Land, as a cooperation project of the Surgical and Urological Department a Transplantation Unit at LMU whose active Staffmember and Co-Director he was from Until 1984 he remained there as consultant. In 1974 he began - together with Ferdinand Eisenberger and Bernd Forssmann, Physicist at Dornier - the basic research for the Project of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for the destruction of Kidney Stones. Beginning of 1975 C. Chaussy started his residency in Urology at the Department of Urology at LMU. After the basic studies with cells, cell cultures, erythrocytes, lymphocytes, tissue reactions in vitro and in vivo, studies on animal models have been performed. Finally on February 7, 1980 the group, now consisting of Christian Chaussy, Bernd Forssmann and Dieter Jocham, was able to treat the first patient with a kidney stone successfully. ESWL was born and rewarded with the Maximilian-Nitze Award of the German Urological Society, the European Science Award and the Distinguished Contribution Award of the AUA. In 1981 he became Professor of Urology, University of Munich, followed by the appointment as Head of the Lithotripsy Unit at the Department of Urology LMU. In 1983 J.J.Kaufmann and W. Goodwin contacted Chaussy and offered him a tenure position at UCLA as Chairman of the new Lithotripsy Unit which he accepted in However, after he had been offered the Chairmanship at the Department of Urology of the University associated Klinikum Harlaching in Munich,, he decided in 1986 to return to Munich. In 1996 Christian Chaussy and Stefan Thüroff started intensive clinical research on the treatment possibilities of Prostate Cancer with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. Meanwhile the Munich group has the most extensive data base on this topic having treated with more than 2500 patients the largest patient collective worldwide. These studies were rewarded with the First Prize of the Bavarian Ministry for Social Affairs and the Award of the Lingen Foundation. During the years Christian Chaussy became Member of many medical and scientifi c national and international societies, among those are honorary Memberships of the Bay Surgical Society, the Western Section AUA, the Brazilian College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, the Urological Society Republic of China together with the Honorary Professorship of the Medical University of Beijing, China. Besides the already mentioned awards for his scientifi c and clinical work he has received several more prestigious awards: the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Endourological Society, the Ritter von Frisch Award of the German Urological Society and in 2011 the Innovators in Urology Award of the EAU. Chaussy retired in February 2010 as Chairman and accepted the position as Clinical Professor of Urology, Keck School of Medicine, USC, USA and is also Consultant Professor of Urology, University of Regensburg. He is currently President elect of the Endourological Society. Masterclass shock wave therapy Abstract Christian Chaussy, Munich, In 1980 Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) found its way into clinical practice. This marked a milestone and tremendous change in the therapy of urinary stones. First therapy studies proved the efficacy of this non invasive treatment modality and resulted in excellent stone free rates of 90 %. Studies with subsequent second and third generation lithotripters displayed inferior outcomes compared to the unmodified DORNIER HM3. Furthermore, the treatment results showed an enormous variability between different systems and even with the same lithotripter. Stone-free rate in SWL is not only depending on the lithotripsy system which is used but also on stone characteristics as localisation, size and composition. Patient s habitus, anatomy of the urinary tract system and finally the expertise of the performing urologist will have a substantial impact on the treatment results. Aim of this lecture is to show how an optimization of ESWL due to efficacy and side effects can be achieved focusing on two major topics: lithotripter technology and the modalities how to apply shock waves.
