6 A TRIBUTE TO MR. FORD William Clay Ford ( ) Detroit Lions Owner and Chairman, Beginning Week 1 this season, the Detroit Lions introduced a special jersey patch displaying the letters WCF in honor of the franchise s late owner, Mr. William Clay Ford. The patch will appear on the left shoulder of all Lions players jerseys for the 2014 season as a tribute to one of the NFL s original statesmen. Mr. Ford passed away on March 9 at the age of 88 and owned and directed the Lions franchise during a span of 50 years. Through fi ve decades, his unwavering leadership provided stability to an organization, its fans and the community when most professional sports franchises cycled through numerous ownership changes and franchise moves. Mr. Ford remained steadfastly committed to ensuring the Lions were always a vital component to the Detroit community and the state of Michigan. THE NFL REMEMBERS MR. FORD NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: For fi ve decades, Mr. Ford s passion for the Lions, Detroit, and the NFL was the foundation of one of the NFL s historic franchises. As an NFL owner, Mr. Ford helped bring the NFL through enormous periods of change and growth, always guided by his commitment to what was best for the NFL and his beloved Lions. All of us in the NFL extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Ford s wife Martha, Bill Ford, Jr. and the entire Ford family. Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: I ve literally been at owners (meetings) when an owner came up and met Mr. Ford for the fi rst time, and the owner was a new owner in the NFL. I was standing right with him and the owner talked about how his granddad had been a Ford dealer in Texas, in the depths of Texas, and he literally teared up when he talked about what Ford, what the brand and what the individuals stood for and had stood for in his evolving to the point that he could buy an NFL football team. He actually teared up and showed that kind of emotion, and that was (former Minnesota Vikings owner) Red McCombs. Late Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson, Jr: I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Ford. He was a man of great integrity who loved his family and his Lions. Bill was well respected within our league as well as the city of Detroit and his contributions to both were numerous. We have all lost a good friend with his passing. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family and many friends. Lions Hall of Fame TE and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel Charlie Sanders: I ve always just enjoyed being around him just to watch him laugh. He was a cheerful owner, you know, upbeat, always positive. I have a lot of memories, but when I think of him I just think of a man that was very fair and enjoyed people and enjoyed people that had the same desires that he had. Most of those are centered around the Detroit Lions organization. Former Lions WR Herman Moore: Every single game that he was in the locker room, we at least spoke, or he would be in the locker room. I appreciated that from our owner. That s a real moment that fans don t know about the commitment that he would show to us players. GAME INFORMATION

7 WELCOME, HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL JIM CALDWELL Head Coach Years with Lions: 1 Years as NFL Head Coach: 4 Years in NFL: 14 As the Lions new head coach, Jim Caldwell brings 37 years of coaching experience to Detroit, including 13 previous years in the NFL and 24 years on the college level. Two Super Bowl titles and three appearances in the NFL s championship game highlight his coaching resume, which includes leading the Indianapolis Colts to an AFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XLVI as head coach following the 2009 season. COACHING OVERVIEW Hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions January 14, Coached in three Super Bowls with Indianapolis (XLI and XLIV) and Baltimore (XLVII) and won two Super Bowl titles (Indianapolis and Baltimore). In fi rst year as head coach for Indianapolis (2009), he won the AFC Championship and led the franchise to Super Bowl XLIV. He became the fi rst NFL coach to win his fi rst 14 games and the fi fth rookie head coach to reach the Super Bowl. One of four head coaches to produce 24+ regular-season wins and a Super Bowl berth in their fi rst two career seasons as head coach. Holds a (.542) regular-season record in three seasons as an NFL head coach, including two seasons with at least 10 wins. Led the Colts to two consecutive AFC South division titles in 2009 and In eight of the 10 seasons Caldwell coached in Indianapolis, the Colts ranked in the Top-10 in total offense eight times and six times in the Top-5. From , Caldwell was the Colts quarterbacks coach and was also promoted to assistant head coach and associate head coach during that time. He worked closely with QB Peyton Manning and the team s quarterbacks. During that span, Indianapolis set NFL records with seven consecutive seasons fi nishing with 11+ wins (6, Dallas ) and 12+ victories (4, Dallas, ). Manning won all four of his NFL MVP (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009) awards under Caldwell s tutelage. Two of his quarterbacks, Manning (Super Bowl XLI) and Ravens QB Joe Flacco (Super Bowl XLVII) were named Super Bowl MVPs following their teams respective championship runs. Led the Ravens offense to a 5-2 record after taking over as offensive coordinator late in the 2012 season as the team averaged yards per game during that span. ASSEMBLING HIS TEAM In his fi rst season in Detroit, Caldwell wasted no time putting together his coaching staff. Headlining that search were the additions of defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, each of whom have won a Super Bowl with Baltimore and New Orleans, respectively. Combined, six of the 10 new Lions assistant coaches have won a Super Bowl championship. NEW LIONS COACHES Teryl Austin (Defensive Coordinator) Jim Bob Cooter (Quarterbacks) Devin Fitzsimmons (Assistant Special Teams) Joe Lombardi (Offensive Coordinator) Tony Oden (Defensive Backs/Cornerbacks) Robert Prince (Wide Receivers) Ron Prince (Assistant Head Coach/Tight Ends) Matt Raich (Defensive Quality Control) Bill Sheridan (Linebackers) Alan Williams (Defensive Backs/Safeties) RETAINED LIONS COACHES Jason Arapoff (Coordinator of Physical Development) John Bonamego (Special Teams Coordinator) Gunther Cunningham (Senior Coaching Assistant) Terry Heffernan (Offensive Quality Control) Bobby Johnson (Assistant Offensive Line) Kris Kocurek (Defensive Line) Curtis Modkins (Running Backs) Ted Rath (Assistant Strength and Conditioning) Evan Rothstein (Special Projects) Jeremiah Washburn (Offensive Line) Jim Washburn (Defensive Line) CALDWELL S HEAD COACHING RECORD REGULAR SEASON Year Team G W L T Pct Result 2009 Ind st AFC South 2010 Ind st AFC South 2011 Ind th AFC South 2014 Det Totals POSTSEASON Year Team G W L T Pct Playoff Berth 2009 Ind Super Bowl XLIV 2010 Ind AFC Wild Card Totals OVERALL G W L T Pct Regular Season Postseason Totals WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT JIM CALDWELL Former Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy: I told Martin (Mayhew) that Jim Caldwell is exactly what you re looking for. He ll lead by making people accountable and by being a role model on and off the fi eld. And with his attention to detail and history of developing quarterbacks, (Matthew) Stafford is going to flourish just like Peyton Manning did with us in Indianapolis. Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome: I believe it would be difficult to fi nd anyone with the Ravens who is more respected than Jim Caldwell. That includes players, coaches and other staff members. He earned that because of the person he is and his extensive knowledge about football, including the keys to winning and his ability to teach all of that. Personally, it is a privilege to know him, and it was an honor to work with him. Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning: Jim Caldwell has meant a great deal to me in my career. I felt like, once he got to Indianapolis, and became my quarterbacks coach, that my game really improved. It took a step up, and I thought Jim had a great deal to do with that. Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco: I enjoyed my time with Jim greatly. He is a man that I will always respect as a football coach, leader and a friend. Through his calming influence and extensive knowledge of the game, he was an integral part of our success over the past few years. He will be missed by me and the Ravens. GAME INFORMATION

With one quarter of the season in the books, Caldwell addressed on Monday the importance of understanding what he has in his locker room and not looking too far ahead. Caldwell on where the Lions stand after four games: We try to look at quarters and just kind of break it up. We like to play the games and add them up at the end, you know, that s the key. It s a marathon, it s not a sprint and every week s a new challenge and you re growing and developing every week. I think you re going to see that from this team. This team is full of potential. Through four games, including two at home and two on the road, Detroit has begun to form an identity early in the season that is highlighted by a few key areas: The Lions own the League s No. 1 ranked defense in total yards allowed per game (267.3), No. 6 rushing defense (80.8) and No. 2 pass defense (186.5), while only allowing a fourth-ranked 15.5 points per game. The defense s 10 sacks are also tied for sixth. On the opposite side of the ball, the Lions are fi nishing games. In each of the team s three wins, QB Matthew Stafford has been able to take a knee to run out the remainder of the clock after gaining key fi rst downs in the four-minute offense. The Lions also rank second in the NFL in time of possession (34:58). With injuries across the board, the Lions have demonstrated their depth on both offense and defense as players from the active roster and practice squad alike have adopted the Next Man Up mentality. Caldwell on if he has a better feel for his team at this point: I do. We certainly have a good feel, which we always did have. They ve been able to battle through it, been able to not let injuries affect them adversely and certainly have been able to play well with some really good football teams. Particularly, some really fi ne defenses that we ve faced. You ve got a great feel about that. After a 3-1 start, the Lions goal continues to be consistent improvement in hope of winning each of the next three quarters. CB Darius Slay on the 3-1 start: We fi nished the fi rst quarter like we wanted to, besides being 4-0. We wanted to fi nish 3-1 and that s how we approached it. Just go out there, grind, compete and be number one in the division and try to stay in the lead and keep winning. DIGS DEBUT S James Ihedigbo made his Lions debut and wasted no time making his presence felt in the team s win over the New York Jets in Week 4 Sunday (9/28). The starting strong safety, and one of the Lions notable acquisitions on defense this offseason in free agency, fi nished his fi rst game as a Lion with fi ve tackles (two solo), one sack (three yards) and one forced fumble. After surrendering a fi eld goal on the Jets opening drive, the Lions D buckled down and forced fi ve consecutive three-and-outs. Ihedigbo attributed the stops to Detroit s ability to switch up its personnel groups and implement players in different spots on the fi eld. GAME INFORMATION

10 Ihedigbo on what the Lions corrected after the Jets opening drive: Just the multiple personnel groupings. They were going quick and trying to get us off guard, and they did for a little bit, but after that we settled down and played Lions football. Ihedigbo s forced fumble came at a crucial moment in the game, as the Jets had the ball and were driving deep into Lions territory in the fourth quarter. Ihedigbo came on a strong-side blitz unguarded and was able to knock the ball loose on his hit on Jets QB Geno Smith as DE Darryl Tapp scooped up the ball for his ninth-career fumble recovery. Ihedigbo on his sack and forced fumble vs. the Jets: It was a good call. Coach called a good blitz. We overloaded them and they couldn t protect it. He (QB Geno Smith) held onto the ball like we thought he was going to do and we just tried to make a play. Ihedigbo s big play became increasingly important after New York drove right down the fi eld on their next possession and put the ball in the end zone to cut the Lions lead to Caldwell on Ihedigbo s play vs. the Jets: James did a nice job. Obviously, he ran around well and made some tackles for us, but obviously, the sack-fumble was key. It was a great blitz, Coach (Teryl) Austin and those guys on defense do a great job of setting those things up. Ihedigbo signed with the Lions after stints with Jets, New Patriots and Ravens, and had been sidelined with a neck injury for the fi rst three games of the season. His role in the secondary was noticed by the rest of the Lions defense, as the eight-year pro added the leadership and toughness that was expected of him upon his arrival in Detroit. Lions CB Darius Slay on Ihedigbo s difference on the field vs. the Jets: It made a big difference. We ve got a big, physical guy out there that s ready to hit someone. He was out there everywhere, making calls, loving it and having fun with us. We enjoy having him back. OPPORTUNITIES ON OFFENSE With WR Calvin Johnson and TE Joseph Fauria bothered by ankle injuries, QB Matthew Stafford turned to his arsenal of weapons to get the job done against the Jets. Not unlike Ihedigbo, WR Golden Tate made his presence known as a Lion as he continued to make big catches in critical situations, fi nishing the game with a career-high eight catches and 116 yards. Caldwell on Tate moving the chains well: There are guys that just have a knack for being able to get open utilizing the space on the fi eld, whether it is man or zone and fi nding the soft spots in the zone, being able to break away and run away from you in man-to-man. Tate wasn t the only one who stepped it up, as rookie TE Eric Ebron also bought in to the Next Man Up mentality and solidifi ed himself as a contributor in the offense. Ebron fi nished the game with three catches for 34 yards and caught his fi rst-career touchdown pass, which gave Detroit a 17-3 lead heading into halftime. Ebron on his first-career NFL touchdown: It s a blessing. Obviously, it was meant to happen, it was meant to be. I couldn t ask for anything more. I couldn t ask for a better throw or a better play call. Tate on Ebron s first touchdown catch: I think that was a huge confi dence builder. He s been working tremendously hard in practice. He s been doing the right thing, protecting his body, eating right, practicing his tail off. I think the game is slowing down. While WR Jeremy Ross is well-known in the Lions locker room as a threat in the kick return game, he showcased his ability on the offensive side of the ball against the Jets. Ross was able to get behind the defense and score on a 59- yard pass from Stafford that gave Detroit a 10-3 lead in the fi rst half. His 59-yard catch was the longest of his career. Ross on his 59-yard touchdown catch: I had the inroute, me and Matt (Stafford) were communicating. I saw the DBs were in a certain coverage, so he gave me a pump. I broke it in, I saw them go low, we took it high and I just ran as fast as I could NOTABLE PLAYER MILESTONES WR CALVIN JOHNSON By recording 78 catches in 2014, Johnson (593) will surpass WR Herman Moore (670) for the most career receptions in Lions history. Johnson is already the leader in every Lions career receiving category, including receiving yards (9,669), receiving touchdowns (68) and 100-yard games (40). He needs just seven receptions to become only the second Lionso WR with 600 career receptions. With one 200-yard game in 2014, Johnson will pass Hall of Fame WR Lance Alworth for the most 200-yard receiving games in NFL history with six. He has at least one 200- yard game in each of the past three seasons ( ). With six total touchdowns in 2014, Johnson will reach 75 total touchdowns for his career and join Hall of Fame RB Barry Sanders (109) as the only Lions players to record 75 career total touchdowns. Johnson needs 331 receiving yards to reach 10,000 for his career and become the only player in Lions history with 10,000 receiving yards. QB MATTHEW STAFFORD Stafford (114) needs fi ve passing touchdowns to pass Hall of Fame QB Bobby Layne (118) and become the Lions all-time leader in passing touchdowns with 119. Currently at 2,645 career passing attempts, Stafford needs 389 attempts to reach 3,000 for his career. Stafford needs 1,367 yards to reach 20,000 career passing yards and become the first Lions player to reach this mark. Currently at 65 games, Stafford can reach 20,000 career passing yards in his fi rst 75 games. With 4,500 passing yards in 2014, Stafford will reach that mark for the fourth-consecutive season (5,038 in 2011, 4,967 in 2012, 4,650 in 2013). DT NDAMUKONG SUH Suh (28.5 sacks, 66 games) can become the Lions alltime leader in sacks by defensive tackles by recording one more sack in DT Shaun Rogers currently holds the Lions record for career sacks by defensive tackles with 29 (98 games). C DOMINIC RAIOLA By playing in Week 1 vs. the New York Giants in 2014, Raiola began his 14th NFL season and tied Hall of Fame CB Dick LeBeau for third on the Lions all-time list for career seasons played.
