2 LANDSCAPE DESIGN COUNCIL MEETING FEBRUARY 10, :30 A.M. U.S. NATIONAL ARBORETUM ARBOR HOUSE BASEMENT WASHINGTON, D.C. BEAUTIFUL WINTER GARDENS JAMES GAGLIARDI Mr. Gagliardi grew up gardening at his family s 1780 s home in Connecticut. He studied horticulture at the University of Connecticut and went on to earn a master s degree from the Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture at the University of Delaware. James previously served as the horticulturist at River Farm, the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society. He is currently a horticulturist with Smithsonian Gardens in Washington, D.C. where he is responsible for the landscape surrounding the National Museum of Natural History, including the Butterfly Habitat Garden and the Urban Bird Habitat. He is honored to be the editor of the Smithsonian s first gardening book, Encyclopedia of Garden Plants for Every Location. Just because it is winter does not mean that gardens or gardeners get to rest. At Smithsonian Gardens, 30 million visitors are welcomed year-round to the landscapes that surround the museums along the National Mall. Those visitors include many tourists, but also wildlife as the gardens serve as an important urban habitat for birds, insects, and mammals. Mr. Gagliardi will show how the gardens at the Smithsonian maintain their appeal in winter beyond impressive displays of pansies, violas and kale. He will highlight important garden features in this bleaker season of the year including berries, grasses, seed heads, stems, bark, evergreens, and even some flowers. 4 HUBERT BOND OWENS SILVER TROPHY (Silver Snack Tray) Awarded to the Landscape Design Council, NCAGC Application read as follows: The Landscape Design Council of NCAGC endeavors to present programs throughout the year that instruct and enlighten its members. Other councils are invited to meetings as well, and guests are encouraged. LDC members judge residential and commercial landscapes in Prince Georges and Montgomery counties, Maryland, as well as the town of Bowie and an area of Arlington, Virginia served by the Rock Spring Garden Club. Members participate in the Speakers Bureau, providing programs to garden clubs on topics such as the Art of Pruning, Perennials for Sun, and Plants with Fall and Winter Interest. The LDC newsletter, produced five times a year, is distributed electronically and contains photos and descriptions of gardens and landscapes visited by traveling members.
