Washington State Government Leadership is everyone s business. A
How old were you when you assumed your first formal leadership position? How old were you when you received your first training on how to be a leader?
Washington State Government
53 State Agency Leaders
Results Model
Our Plan For Today Share a technique Tell a Washington State story Table top discussion Group debrief 2x
Large Audience Workshops
Large Audience Workshops 1 day participants per session Pre-Work LPI My Leadership Challenge My Leadership Best Custom materials Seated at tables of six Table top activities bring it to life
We re Washington State Government developing our leaders at every A level of our organization. Alfie Alvarado-Ramos Director Dept of Veterans Affairs
A Matt Cronk Ariana Wood Results Washington Lean Fellows John Cooper When I demonstrate the exemplary behaviors, I m supporting our Lean journey efforts. Eden Teachout Washington State Government
Table Top Time What questions do you have about planning and/or using this technique? What ideas do you have for how to plan and/or use this technique successfully? 1 day participants per session Pre-Work LPI My Leadership Challenge My Leadership Best Custom materials Seated at tables of six Table top activities bring it to life
Group Ideas & Questions About Large Group Workshops #1 (collected during session) Need to involve leadership in departments in choosing participants and leading table discussions. How do you target specific individuals as gatekeepers to spreading the word? How do you build a scaffold around the one-day event so that there is greater retention? Do you specify department heads attend? Do we require folks to be there or are they invited? How do you create trust and intimacy in such a short format? Important to set clear expectations for both participants and managers Is it hard to cover all 5 practices in just one day? Do you focus on a couple in-depth and mention others? Use world café: visual representation everyone can see Do you have post-session check ins with manager for accountability?
Group Ideas & Questions About Large Group Workshops #2 (collected during session) Is it possible to tailor to the audience and expound more on a practice that suits the group so the group gets what they need? For 1 day session, have participants watch webinar and send LPI results in advance Can this happen virtually? Using Adobe Connect Use a pre-event questionnaire to raise interest and engagement Some table top groups will likely take charge and will be engaged, but how do you get the others to move along? Based on the results of your 90 participants, you could break the small table-top groups up based on varying strengths making sure each group contained at least 1 self-directed type. Can you conduct smaller workshops more frequently possibly a series with the same people possibly online Do you organize the group by table, or let them sit randomly?
Group Ideas & Questions About Large Group Workshops #3 (collected during session) Use follow up to cover other modules included in longer-duration TLC workshops Another case example we did a 60 person large org. with senior mgmt. It didn t work well at that audience. They wanted more experiential and case studies. Videos were too basic. Not as much time spent on pre-work, though we did have an introductory webinar In just one day, it might be difficult to add value to people with very different experience levels. Maybe 3 facilitators, break-out rooms, and position pre-work differently. Do you need to use all the TLC materials (workbook, values cards, 5 th edition, etc)? Can you pick and choose to help reduce costs? Look for a couple of high-impact experiential items to replace videos and do them early in the day Break the material into small chunks 15 minutes, 1 activity, 1 concept Build into new employee orientation process
12-Month Self-Directed Program
12-Month, Self-Directed Program Complete LPI Participate in 1-day Large Audience Workshop Join a Learning Pod (4-6 people) Schedule regular pod meetings to discuss selected topics (sourced from the LPI Planner) Participate in six webinars (facilitated by CM) Complete LPI reassessment
Washington State Government Reinforcing these behaviors in the context of work over time is one of our key strategies. A Darrell Damron, Results Washington
King County Government The LPI gave our leaders a shared vocabulary; we re learning new skills to coach and A mentor our teams. Carol Basile, Deputy Director King County Finance & Business Operations
Table Top Time What questions do you have about planning and/or using this technique? What ideas do you have for how to plan and/or use this technique successfully? Complete LPI Participate in 1-day Large Audience Workshop Join a Learning Pod (4-6 people) Schedule regular pod meetings to discuss selected topics (sourced from the LPI Planner) Participate in six webinars (facilitated by CM) Complete LPI reassessment
Group Ideas & Questions About 12-Month Program #1 (collected during session) Use coaches with selected people Use of brainstorming with peers Create organized pod work that is truly self-managed How do we manage any tension between different leadership levels in the pod? Do some people feel they are more advanced than others? Give people credit for application not for attendance Teach senior level people 1 practice at a time. Help them to really know and implement coaching, etc. Have them teach next group Take this to our schools. Teach teachers when come back to school. Follow up with reinforcement of each practice 2 months at a time (i.e. newsletters). After teaching teachers, teach to students How is everything accessed? Website portal? Create a completion certificate. Use the TLC app Correlate to an engagement survey
Group Ideas & Questions About 12-Month Program #2 (collected during session) Engage alumni network to be champions Create a peer network moving forward. Be an accountability team. Community sharing online Create an award for someone that practices the 5 practices for recognition (encourage the heart!) Develop a system like Toyota. Even small incremental changes Build into performance review. Do you have a plan? Where do 5 behaviors fit into an organization s current assessments? Incorporate a personality test (such as DiSC or Enneagram) Great way to help create a common language at the different levels of the organization Assign a leader for each pod to keep things moving along How often are the pods meeting? How can you manage or encourage that process?
Group Ideas & Questions About 12-Month Program #3 (collected during session) Webinar live interaction. Archive for later viewing Leadership ambassadors: Meet regularly to see what they can do to sustain leadership practices. ID Ambassadors based on passion and credibility How do you price this? How do you balance the work consultants do versus the work participants own? Continuing the challenge: 1-hour lunch and learns: Maintain continuity Accountability partners: check in with each other Create a project: company priority: connect to behaviors: select a project that they are already doing Articles/Newsletters to share success stories Have a champion up high to check in to see how it s going Every 2 months video conference scheduled Champions follow up with each other. Share what s worked and what isn t working
Washington State Government Leadership is everyone s business... A
We must not make excuses. As leaders in the TLC community, we must take responsibility for driving the change we want to see in the world!
