3 Johor Corporation Leadership Programme A two-year structured leadership programme aiming to accelerate the career of high potential senior executives to be future leaders of JCorp Group What Can The Participant Expect? Johor Corporation (JCorp) as one of Malaysia s leading conglomerates needs to prepare its future leaders. Today s uncertain business climate calls for JCorp to have visionary leaders to provide long-term sustainability for the Group. The (JLP) presents an integrated view of the fundamentals of management. By gaining a deeper understanding of core business functions, the participants will improve their decision-making skills and expand their leadership capacity. The two-year structured leadership programme will involve on-campus and off-campus modules. During the course of the programme, you will share diverse perspectives on strategies, ideas, opportunities, personal and professional challenges. The JLP will expose you to business challenges from different angles and sharing of leadership experience. Build strategic skills for effective decision making, strategy development and implementation. Expand your capacity to lead cross-functional initiatives and corporate projects and challenging global markets. Develop a personal leadership philosophy that reflects greater knowledge, capabilities and insights. Introduction / Skill Assessment Foundation Skill Building Cross Functional Business Approach Strategy Formulation & Implementation Leading Change Personal Leadership MODULE 1 : INTRODUCTION/SKILL ASSESSMENT Format : On-Campus Duration : 3 days Given their diverse educational and professional concentration, participants will have varying degrees of experience and proficiency in fundamental areas such as accounting, finance, medicine, plantation management, property, human capital and others within the JCorp Group. Module 1 will bring them to a common level of understanding to maximize their learning experience and expectation. Module 1 introduction programme would take 3 days. The programme would include ice breaking session to foster networking and team leadership. Leadership is about taking responsibility, not making excuses - Mitt Romney Participants will get a better understanding of the programme and will discuss changes and improvement to make it more effective in pursuing their leadership goals. Module 1 would include assessment on basic understanding of Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Companies Act, Corporate Governance, Risk Management and other fundamental areas. 3 4
5 Module 1 : Introduction / Skill Assessment Module 2 : Foundation Skill Building The Management Books Analysis, the Mentor-Mentee Programme, the E-learning and the 24 Leadership Speeches will be presented in this module. Interaction among fellow participants is important as to prepare them for future modules where it includes distance learning and interactive case studies discussion among fellow participants. MODULE 2 : FOUNDATION SKILL BUILDING Format : Off Campus Duration : 10 weeks Distance Learning Courses : During these 10 weeks, participants would be given online reading materials and recommended text books to grasp a better understanding of the Companies Act, Securities Act, Employment Act and to improve their proficiency in fundamental areas such as Accounting, Finance, Human Resource, Human Capital Management, Risk Management, Strategic Management and Quantitative Methods. Participants are also required to read 5 recommended Management Books and write a 2-page synopsis for each of the books. The Faculty will lead interactive discussions on selected topics. You will have a chance to meet other participants online within the context of the discussion. Through various online exercises, you will begin to determine your goals for the programme and the faculty will start assessing your personal leadership and management competencies. Proficiency exams would be formulated to determine the level of understanding and to assess the performance of the participants with a view of dropping off and at least 10 percent of the number of participants before moving to Module
6 Module 3 : Cross Functional Business Approach Module 3 : Cross Functional Business Approach MODULE 3 : CROSS FUNCTIONAL BUSINESS APPROACH Format : Duration : On Campus Learning Two (2) weeks programme with maximum 10 participants per class conducted at 3 regions Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang. Two (2) weeks During this module, participants would go through in-depth examination of key functional areas, where participants will be tested on latest business techniques and technologies. They will explore new ways to manage in a borderless environment as their company faces increasing budget reductions, high cost of gearing, shrinking markets, intensifying competition, regulatory changes, more price sensitive customers and limited resources. Module 3 would also involve discussion on 5 management/leadership books plus listening and discussion about leadership downloaded from the internet. This module would test the perseverance, dedication and discipline of participants to work long hours, especially in dealing with crisis situation. Minimum contact with family members/staff would be implemented for participants to be more focused on the training! Functional areas examined include:- : Functional and business unit strategy Strategy formulation, strategy implementation and control system and growth strategies. Marketing Finance & accounting Operations : Product management, marketing strategy, market segmentation, product positioning, market analysis and planning, branding, customer acquisition and retention; and employee, shareholder and customer satisfaction for profit and growth. : Financial accounting, financial statement, accounting choices and financial reporting policies, financial analysis, treasury or cash management, lending strategy and gearing policy, budgeting, forecasting control system, self-auditing and profitability analysis, budgeting, forecasting control system, selfauditing and profitability analysis. : Internal process, standard operating procedures, technology and operation strategies, product and market capabilities coordination/supply chain management, new product/process creation and analysis, and human resource capacities. Human Capital Management : Staff recruitment, training, talent management, performance appraisal, industrial relations and succession planning. 7 8
7 Module 4 : Strategy Formulation & Implementation Module 4 : Strategy Formulation & Implementation MODULE 4 : STRATEGY FORMULATION & IMPLEMENTATION Format : Off Campus Learning (Group Project) Duration : 14 weeks Working together through a dedicated portal, virtual meeting room and teleconferencing every participant need to analyze the competitive landscape and then formulate and implement strategies for respective companies. As the participants strive to achieve competitive advantage, they will make decisions about raising capital, borrowings, entering or exiting product categories, manufacturing and distribution and marketing and sales strategy. The participant will engage in various online exercises, group work and individual study designed to improve their strategic skills and drive cross-functional collaboration. These include: Strategy Project The participant will formulate a detailed strategy statement and implementation plan for their organizational unit. Drawing from the foundational skills and cross functional knowledge they required in the previous modules, the participant will make organizational decisions and apply management techniques and technologies that will drive optimal results. Business Simulation Exercise Assigned to management teams in companies competing in the same industry, the participant and peers will each assume the role of a senior executive in charge of a primary business function. Through online debriefings with program facilitators during the simulation exercise, the participants will evaluate company performance, assess teamwork effectiveness, reinforce the resultsoriented learning. 9 10
8 Module 4 : Strategy Formulation & Implementation Module 4 : Strategy Formulation & Implementation Introduction to Change Management Through video case studies, multimedia faculty presentations, and handson exercises, the participants will explore the elements of leading change inter-functional relationships; internal communication network; incremental and discontinuous organizational change; organizational ambidexterity; and strategic experimentation and learning. The participants also will be presented with a framework for implementing the results of the company-specific strategy exercise. Customized Leadership Learning Path Assessment JLP provides the participants with an enlightened perspective through 360-degree feedback from their programme sponsor, managers, and coworkers on their skills, leadership competency, and performance. The results not only will help the participants to develop goals for strengthening their individual leadership capacity, but also will serve as the basis for personal coaching activities in Module 5 and for a personalized set of leadership resources and tools. Faculty-Lead Webinars The Faculty will lead an interactive case discussion on selected topics. There will also be some opportunities to get insights their personal case study/strategy project. Investment Online Game The participants will be required to join the Virtual Stock Exchange (VSE) game. With VSE, the participants are required to : Discussing Key Issues That Affect You Trade stocks in Real-time using their virtual portfolio Talk strategies with others in the discussion group for their game Create a customized public or private game for others to play Choose a custom list of symbols to trade in their game 11 12
9 Module 5 : Leading Change Module 5 : Leading Change MODULE 5 : LEADING CHANGE Format : On Campus Learning Duration : Two (2) weeks programme with a break of one month in between the modules Two (2) weeks With an integrated organizational perspective established, the participants and team will be ready to learn how to drive real results for the organization. Focused on change and innovation, they will learn how successful executives move their company from market player to market leader. During the modules, the Faculty will organize lunch write from successful CEOs, entrepreneurs to give participants an insight of leadership, turnaround and change management in organization that they previously lead or still leading. Throughout this module, and the lesson learnt from the various lunch talks, the participants will explore: Change Management Performance and opportunity gaps, organizational and design skills, organizational culture, and links between innovation and organizational evolution. Innovation Best Practices Common language for company-wide collaboration, experimentation and learning, enablement of an entrepreneurial mind-set. Opportunity identification, decision making, balance between core businesses, new opportunities, innovations and new growth businesses. Leadership and Execution Decision making processes, negotiation strategic, creating networking, teamwork and group effectiveness, management versus leadership, conflict leadership, risk management, and adaptation of leadership styles
10 Module 6 : Personal Leadership Module 6 : Personal Leadership MODULE 6 : PERSONAL LEADERSHIP Format : On Campus Learning Leadership In Action Duration : Two (2) weeks programme with a break of one month in between the modules Two (2) weeks Common leadership styles, leadership through example, empowerment of team members, challenges to leadership, effective use of power, selection of the right tools, strategies and methods This session brings all the elements of the participants Leadership Development Programme together in an intensive exploration of what it means to be a leader, their responsibilities as a leader, and how to lead effectively at each stage of their development. They will acquire a deeper understanding of how exceptional leaders influence their companies as well as the people around them. Key elements of this module include: Authentic Leadership Leadership Development Leadership exercise, reassessment of personal leadership goals and action plan of the particpants The leading journey, experiences and passions that give the leadership self awareness, values, ethics and standards, life balance, and leadership through purpose of the participants

12 ROLE OF MENTOR ROLE OF MENTEE As a mentor, the primary role is to provide guidance and support to the mentee based on his/her unique development needs. At different points in the relationship, listed below are also the important roles : 1. Coach/Advisor Give advice and guidance. Share ideas and provide feedback. Share information on unwritten rules for success within environment/organization. As a mentee, they will play many different roles during the course of mentoring relationship. The following are some important roles : 1. Driver of Relationship Identify the skills, knowledge, and/or goals that you want to achieve and communicate them to your mentor. Bring up new topics that are important to you at any point and give feedback to your mentor. 2. Source of Encouragement/Support Act as sounding board for ideas/concerns about school/career choices, provide insights into possible opportunities Provide support on personal issues (if appropriate). 3. Resource Person Identify resources to help mentee enhance his/her personal development and career growth Expand the mentee s network of contacts. 4. Champion Serve as advocate for mentee whenever opportunity presents itself. Seek opportunities for increased visibility for mentee. 5. Devil s Advocate When appropriate, play devil s advocate to help mentee think through important decisions and strategies Development Planner Maintain a mentoring plan and work with your mentor to set up goals, development activities and time frames. 3. Resource Partner Work with your mentor to seek resources for learning. Identify people and information that might be helpful. 4.
