I really, really, really enjoy what I m doing. I think of myself as one of the luckiest people in the world because I effectively get to do what is a hobby for a living. If you're passionate about making a difference and love interacting with young people then teaching could be for you. It's not an easy job, I wouldn't want to pretend that it is, but the rewards are tremendous. There are many ways to become a teacher, having a good degree in your subject area is important, as is previous experience of working with children, however there are many routes into teaching from the Schools Direct programme to Troops to Teachers. If you want it badly enough you will find a way to get there. Becoming a teacher is one of the best decisions I have ever made, it's what I want to do for the rest of my life.

4 BEN BOSWORTH Home town: Penryn 03 Low Carbon Design Leader Employer: PBWC Architects, St Ives Starting Salary: 27,000 Design and coordination of construction projects Low carbon advice Analysis of construction projects 04To Low carbon analysis of PBWC Architects Ben s Route: A Levels in Maths, Physics and Art, BSc in Architecture, MA in Architecture, CEPH (Certified Passivhaus Designer) Progressing into a career in architecture you would obviously need a degree in Architectural Studies and I ve got a Masters in Architectural Studies as well. It is a focussed career choice to move into architecture so you ve got to have an interest in the construction industry in the first place and from that strength across the board in different subjects is very important. Managing Director/Social Entrepreneur Employer: Questions and Answers Community Interest Company, Redruth Starting Salary: 35,000 Overall responsibility for Questions and Answers Community Interest Company JAMES Business development BROWNING Strategy Home town: Camborne Staff management Finance and budgeting Developing and leading on new initiatives James s Route: GCSEs, Install and Supporting IT Systems Level 3, C&G 7303 Adult Teaching Certificate, IV Internal Verifiers Award, NVQ in Management I wanted to challenge myself, hence why I set up Questions and Answers. I very much wanted to be in control, to be in the position of setting something up from scratch and to be able to make a difference without having to report to several other layers of management. I wanted that freedom to work for myself really. I m very lucky to work in a profession that has a very real and direct impact on the world in which we live and as I was born and grew up in Cornwall I ve chosen that as the place I can have that impact. Ben Bosworth Low Carbon Design Leader PBWC Architects, St Ives For me it s about passion and making something happen that has the potential to impact on someone s life. The smallest things can have the biggest impact. James Browning Managing Director/Social Entrepreneur Questions and Answers Community Interest Company, Redruth

Local colleges offer very good degree level courses partnered with other universities and if you approach local leading law firms to gain experience this may even open an opportunity to start building your career. I decided to go back into education. I liked Maths and I liked Science, so I found myself doing a Foundation Degree in Renewable Energy Technology. Within a few months I became very very passionate about mitigating climate change and after finishing my BSc at Cornwall College I saw a job advertised in planning, working on similar types of projects. I took the chance and four years later I m now doing some really exciting stuff in a job that I love. 9

I d advise any budding young marketing entrepreneur to work really hard, get an internship if possible like I did in my final year and supplement it with whatever additional qualifications you can. There are lots of opportunities in Cornwall if you look for them. Doing what I do I ve found that there are a lot of opportunities but you really have to get out there. I really enjoy working for PFA Research because it s really vibrant and there are a lot of different things going on. There s always something new and changing so I m always having to keep on my toes to learn more.

12 MARISA MARTIN Home town: Falmouth 19 Shop Manager Employer: Finisterre, St. Agnes Starting Salary: 17,000 Serve customers and make their experience in the shop memorable Regular merchandising Greeting customers who enter the shop 20To Stock control Management Marisa s Route: GCSEs, A Levels in English Language, French, Art and Design and Business Studies, Degree in Event Management HR Advisor Employer: The Seafood Restaurant, Padstow Starting Salary: Competitive Organising internal and external recruitment processes BENJAMIN Managing employment related documents MILBY Maintaining a broad network of contacts Home town: St Merryn Benjamin s Route: GCSEs, A Levels, BSc Business Management, MSc Business Management What inspired me at first was the website and how different it looked to other brands. My mum was in retail and I ve been brought up around it. I love working in Cornwall because of the environment. Our offices are based on the cliff tops in St Agnes and it s a luxury coming into work every day. In terms of opportunities it s about making the most of what is available, making the most of your CV and having the confidence to pick up the phone and make your first impression count. I would say to anybody to research companies and think about what you really want to do and what you are interested in.

13 TASHA MITCHELL Home town: Camborne 21 Project Youth Worker Employer: Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change, Redruth Starting Salary: 18,000 Build up young people s skills to help them to progress into employment, education, volunteering or apprenticeships 22To Tasha s Route: GCSEs, A Levels, BA Hons Youth and Community Work IT Engineer Employer: Datasharp UK, Truro Starting Salary: 17,500-20,000 Network management STEVEN Network deployment NICHOLAS Voice over IP Home town: Newquay Telephony Troubleshooting Schools don t really do youth work qualifications so if you want to be a youth worker you have to do it at college or degree level. To get into uni I had to have four different subjects at A Level. People always talk about their dream jobs and mine was to be a youth worker in the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area because I ve grown up here and I know the kind of issues young people face. Steven s Route: A Levels in IT, Maths and English, IT specialist course, FdSc in Computing and Networking It s primarily my degree that got me here. For anybody looking to do this sort of career I d suggest studying hard and choosing the right course, preferably at university level. Also send out your CV to the companies you want to work for.

14 SHARON O SULLIVAN Home town: St Agnes 23 Physiotherapist Employer: Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, Truro Starting Salary: 22,000 Delivering high quality care to a variety of patients Assessing and treating patients Working independently as well as part of a multi disciplinary team 24To Sharon s Route: Equivalent of GCSEs and A Levels in Ireland, Diplomas in Yoga and Sports Massage, BSc in Equine Science and Management, BSc in Physiotherapy Business Workshop Manager Employer: Unlocking Potential, Penryn Starting Salary: 25,000 Working with business owners and senior level managers ANNA PENROSE Putting together Fast Forward groups Home town: Falmouth Talking to businesses Organising workshops Sourcing speakers Anna s Route: Degree in Business Administration If you want it, if you believe in it, you can do it. You need to work hard and apply yourself for three years whilst you study and even when you have qualified your learning doesn t stop there. It s continued professional development. That s the great thing about being a physio, if you want to learn you keep learning. There are tonnes of opportunities in Cornwall and I think that it s a case of going out there, finding them and putting yourself out there. Traditional perceptions of what Cornwall offers are starting to diminish. People think you have to go to the cities to get opportunities but there are a lot more people in the cities so the competition is just as fierce. If anything you can find some real gems in Cornwall, which you couldn t find elsewhere. Anna Penrose Business Workshop Manager Unlocking Potential, Penryn

15 SALLY REED Home town: Launceston 25 Chartered Accountant Employer: Sally Reed Ltd, Launceston Starting Salary: 18,000-22,000 Assist small businesses to understand financial responsibilities Help people manage their business Spur internal growth 26To Assist with payroll and tax returns Sally s Route: A Levels in Maths, English, French and Economics, BSc in Economics, ACA Chartered Accountant Assistant Buyer Employer: Seasalt, Falmouth Starting Salary: Dependent on Experience Assist the Buying and Planning Manager with the development CHARLOTTE of the range plan for each season ROLLASON Develop and implement phase plans and calendars for each sales channel Home town: Penryn Charlotte s Route: NCFE Level 2 Creative Craft in Fashion, Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design, BA (Hons) Textile Design, FRA Short Course Introduction to Buying and Range Planning There are two ways of becoming a Chartered Accountant. You can either leave school at 16 and go in as an apprentice, spending one day a week in college and the rest of the time with your employer. Or you can get your degree and go into accountancy after that as a graduate. Once you re qualified you have that qualification for the rest of your life. Even though I don t specialise in textile design and print here, my degree at Falmouth University gave me the knowledge for the department that I work in and really pushed me to want to be in this industry. You can get a lot of help from companies like Seasalt to develop in your field. The opportunities are there - you just have to take them. Charlotte Rollason Assistant Buyer, Seasalt, Falmouth

There are a few opportunities but I think the best thing to do is to get out there and do as much volunteering as possible, it s definitely the key to opening doors and finding out who s doing what locally. I love being out and about on boats, seeing the coastline of Cornwall and also handling shellfish, marine mapping and surveying. It s a completely different world to what a lot of people do day to day. Kimara Street Scientific Officer, Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority, Penzance

When I discovered networking I found this to be a very important tool to have as it enabled me to get my third year placement and some great industry experience. Rebecca s Route: A Levels in English, Law, Psychology and History, Degree in English Literature, MA in English What has really helped me the most is my background in English, which I ve followed from GCSE to Masters, so I ve got a good understanding of literature, language and grammar that is really useful for my role.
