2 The Basic Program The San Juan College Teacher Education Program provides students with a comprehensive foundational course of study between credits which aligns with the local UNM and NMHU four year Degree programs in Education. The SJC Teacher Education programs provide a variety of education course electives for the AA degrees. The program also strives to meet the needs of local teachers by offering courses to promote professional development. Curriculum Whether your goal is to acquire the Teacher Education Associate of Arts Degree, continue on to a four year university to pursue a bachelors or masters in education, the courses for all three Teacher Education Associate of Arts Degrees have been selected to provide a broad base for student success. Specific courses for each of the degrees Elementary, Secondary and Special Education along with course requirements are listed in the current academic catalog, and are online on the SJC website. A grade point average of 2.75 or above is expected.

Special topic courses such as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Special Education, technology, reading and Gifted Education instruction are also offered. All three Teacher Education AA degree programs meet the criteria and program outcomes as established by the HED for common core requirements and the NMPED for teacher licensure, and are designed to transfer seamlessly to the Education Programs at the four year universities.

4 Life After the Teacher Education Degree Program When I started my education at San Juan College, I was in the engineering studies program. However, with both of my parents being teachers, I knew the rewards of the profession and soon switched my studies to elementary education. The program at San Juan College put me in a classroom right away, interacting with children and tutoring students. This helped me solidify my choice and now, after graduating, I am a preschool teacher and a student in the UNM education program. Juan Robles, employed at SJC - Child & Family Development Center

5 Employment Opportunities Job positions for elementary, middle and secondary school teachers are expected to increase as many current teachers reach retirement age. Those specializing in Math, Science, Special Education, and Foreign Languages are in particular high demand. There is also an increased need for minority and bilingual educators. Starting salaries for certified licensed teachers range from $35,000 to $45,000 regionally. Of course dedication and a sincere desire to work with children and youth are necessary dispositions in this rewarding profession.
