1 WORKSHOP TITLE: Animation Station (Phenakistoscopes) WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR (S): Raoul Deal NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 12 students SESSION: 11:00-1:00 DESCRIPTION: The phenakistoscope is an animation contraption that uses the persistence of motion principle to create the illusion of movement. It consists of a disc with slots around the edge, and drawings of successive action, drawn around the disc in concentric circles. When viewed in a mirror through the first disc's slots, the pictures will appear to move. These animations may be narrative, abstract, wild, conventional, but they are always surprising! STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Miscellaneous drawing instruments (pencils or markers ) will be useful. WE WILL SUPPLY: All other materials will be provided Painting supplies, colored pencils, markers, cardboard disks, mirrors for viewing the animations.

2 WORKSHOP TITLE: Image & Text Workshop Poetry & Photo from student work, Glacier National Park, Montana, 2011 WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Helene Fischman and Eric Roman Beining NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 Students SESSION: DESCRIPTION: In this workshop, students will learn to create artwork integrating word and image. Students will have a local photo assignment outside the building, learning to target image focal points in different parts of the frame. Returning back to the classroom, they will learn to compose a simple 5 line poem (a quintain), through exercises evoking a cache of nouns and adjectives to describe the scenes they just photographed. We will then place the text over selected images creating a visual poem to represent their concept. Students will leave the workshop with at least one unique visual poem, and we will create a book of all participant work. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Students will need to bring (1) a notebook and pen/pencil or laptop, and (2) a camera with USB connecting cord to download images onto computer. WE WILL SUPPLY: Desktop computers in lab, printers & inkjet photo paper.

3 WORKSHOP TITLE: Pinhole Photography Mary Ruth Moore, Spitfire, 2000, 35mm pinhole, Two exposures each 2-3 minutes. WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Joseph Mougel and Robert Johnson NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 Students SESSION: 11AM-1PM DESCRIPTION: In this workshop students will learn firsthand about a novel, lo-fi approach to the art of photography by utilizing this most basic of cameras, the pinhole. Students will first capture images onto black and white photographic negative paper. Then they will be introduced to the darkroom, where they will utilize contact printing techniques to make a final positive image. This session will introduce to the students fundamental concepts of light to create images, along with darkroom printing techniques. They will learn to capture, develop, fix, and wash their prints so that they may leave the workshop with 2-3 unique, one of a kind pinhole images to take home. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Students will only need to bring themselves and a vision for the sort of images they want to capture. Keep in mind that this is a very basic camera and exposure time can range toward upwards of 10 or 15 minutes. WE WILL SUPPLY: We will have 15 pinhole cameras ready for use and a limited supply of photographic paper for students to capture and print their images. If students have their own photographic paper and wish to print more, they may bring additional materials. Also, time permitting, if students want to bring their own light-tight box, we would be happy to instruct them on how to make their own pinhole camera. Examples of acceptable boxes would be an oatmeal can, shoebox, and a coffee cup with lid. Please take the time to paint the inside of these future cameras black. Utilize a spray booth, if using spray paint.

4 WORKSHOP TITLE: Copper Dog Tag Charms WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Michael Bernard & Stephanie Voegele NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 16 SESSION: NOTE: There is only one session this year. It is 11am-1pm. DESCRIPTION: In this workshop, you will have the chance to learn some basic cutting, drilling, and texturing of metal. We will be making copper dog tag style necklaces or key chains. You will be able to cut a custom shape and add texture and words to your tag. We will help you antique the copper and then finish the piece by adding a key ring or a ball-chain necklace. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: None WE WILL SUPPLY: Copper, keychain rings, necklace chain, and tools.

5 WORKSHOP TITLE: Ceramic Stenciling WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Michael A. Ware NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: SESSION: 11am-1pm. DESCRIPTION: Interested in ceramics and image making? This workshop will teach students how stencils are used to create images on ceramic tiles. First the students will create a stencil and then use it to apply slip on a ceramic tile. The tiles will be fired after the workshop and students can come and pick up their tile(s) the following week. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Scissors or xacto knife (some will be provided but possibly not enough if there are a lot of interested students), and ideas. WE WILL SUPPLY: Clay tiles, slip, and sponges, brushes.

Artist and Display and Lynn Tsan WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Nora Hackenberg and Lynn Tsan NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 DESCRIPTION: Artist And Display, one of our generous art supply store sponsors, will bring Chicago based Artist Lynn Tsan will lead a hands on artists look at Crescent Cardboard s full line of art boards & it s revolutionary bleed-proof sketchbooks & paper. She will demonstrate tips & techniques for using Boards for your Art Surface & provide free materials and samples for your experimentation. This workshop is great for those who love to draw! STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Themselves WE WILL SUPPLY: All other supplies

7 WORKSHOP TITLE: The Exquisite Corpse WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Cynthia Hayes and Rosalie Beck NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 16 SESSION: NOTE: There is only one session this year. It is 11am-1pm. DESCRIPTION: The Exquisite Corpse workshop is based on a surrealist game. Each artist will create a section of a body derived from famous master works. The parts are then assembled to form a complete and often amusingly bizarre figure. Tempera paint and charcoal will be our media. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Students need to bring only their happy selves! WE WILL SUPPLY: Paper, tempera paint and brushes.

8 WORKSHOP TITLE: Animation Station (Stop Motion) WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: Kim Cosier NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 students SESSION: 11:00-1:00 DESCRIPTION: Animating with istopmotion can open up a world of creative possibilities. With this inexpensive but powerful tool you can bring to life any story you can imagine! This workshop will give you an overview of the software and provide short demos of a variety of ways of working in animation, from using found objects, to pixilation, to collage. We will introduce you to the work of non-mainstream animators working in a variety of media to give you an idea of the wide range of possibilities. Then, we will work in 4 teams to develop a storyboard and create short animated movies that will be uploaded to Vimeo for sharing. STUDENTS COULD BRING: your favorite action figures, creepy dolls, peeps, bottle caps, loose change and pocket lint -if you can carry it in one hand you can use it in a stop motion animation project! WE WILL SUPPLY: 4 stations with MacBook Pro Computers with istopmotion, imovie, Final Cut Pro, and After Effects software, document cameras, and random items and images to animate

9 WORKSHOP TITLE: Collaborative Painting & Collage WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Bill Houghton NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 DESCRIPTION: Participants will engage in the creation of a large-scale collaborative painting and collage, using acrylic paints and a variety of acrylic painting mediums. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: It is recommended that students bring smocks, aprons, or wear clothes suitable for painting in. Students may wish to bring materials for collage i.e. old magazines, old posters, cloth scraps, etc. WE WILL SUPPLY: Acrylic paints and Mediums, Brushes, Palette Knives, Canvas, Palette Paper.

10 WORKSHOP TITLE: Screenprint Monotypes Image by Greg Martens WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Chadwick Noellert & Matthew Lee NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 18 DESCRIPTION: Students will utilize the Print and Narrative Forms printmaking facilities by participating in a hands-on screenprint monotype workshop. Screenprint Monotype is a layering process, whereby a series of monotype prints are made by drawing or painting directly onto the silkscreen mesh with watersoluble materials. The printing paper is then registered under the screen, and the image is pushed through onto the paper by squee-geeing a specially formulated binder over the screen as in traditional screenprinting. During this hands-on workshop, students will apply their imagery to the screen and pull 2-4 prints using this printmaking process. Source imagery could include a sketch, original color photograph (by the student artist), digital print, etc. The image area can be approximately 7 x 10 or smaller. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Images/ideas, sketchbooks for taking notes, and pencils. WE WILL SUPPLY: Screens, paints, pastels, water soluble crayons, graphite sticks, transparent base, tape, and sturdy printmaking paper (Arches 88).

11 WORKSHOP TITLE: Interactive Art: Sound, Motion and Motors E10, 2009 interactive installation with motion tracking and generative imaging Braulio Garcia, Interactive Art, Junior, Interdisciplinary Arts & Technology WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Joe Grennier and Patrick Lichty NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 18 DESCRIPTION: Students will learn the basics surrounding interactive development with Max (made by Cycling74) and Arduino. They will receive and learn the inner-workings of software that can mix videos and images based on the volume (amplitude) of noise in a room, or on the amount of movement in its space, as well as learn how sensors and motors can interface with computers. We will also explain the basics of how computer vision technologies for body tracking, such as the Xbox Kinect, function. Finally, students will work alone or in teams to input their own video and images (found, or shot) into the interactive software, towards artistic ends. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: No equipment is required, but students are encouraged to bring their laptops, video-enabled cameras, and/or any footage and images they may want to play with.

12 WORKSHOP TITLE: Through Casting and Connecting: The Making of a Body George Segal George Segal Pregnant Woman Dancers WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Ryan Mandell and Kathryn E. Martin-Meurer NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 16 SESSION: 11am-1pm. DESCRIPTION: Using the body as a point of departure, we will be working on a collaborative body casting. Using clay as a waste mold, students will be casting their hands and feet in plaster. Using burlap as an armature, sections of the body will be cast, again in plaster. And one by one, part by part, over the course of 2 hours, a fully realized representational cast of everyone will be assembled and constructed. This will be fun. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Any old clothing that they may wish to donate to the sculpture, such as an old pair of jeans or shorts, a t shirt and a button down shirt, shoes, hats, etc. WE WILL SUPPLY: Plastic Sheeting, tape, Vaseline, chip brushes, plaster, clay and burlap.

13 WORKSHOP TITLE: Street Legal Stencils: Mud as a Medium in Street Art! WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Corey Smith and Print Club Members NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: range is ideal. SESSION: 11am-1pm. DESCRIPTION: Mud stencils allow anyone to show image and/or text legally, sustainably, and to a wide audience when placed out in the public realm. In this way, messages can be shared far beyond one s original scope; making mud stencils a potent tool in the battle for social justice. We will begin by refining your imagery to be transferred and cut out of Mylar. Once prepared, we will take these stencils out onto campus placing them in mindful locations. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Ideas that could translate into stencil ready imagery, approximately 12 X 12 up to 20 wide, Exacto Knife, Cutting Matt if you have one WE WILL SUPPLY: Everything else!

14 WORKSHOP TITLE: Printing with Wood Blocks on Canvas or Fabric WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Nirmal Raja NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 20 DESCRIPTION: Students will learn wood block printing on fabric by hand, creating repeat patterns and surface design with hand carved wood blocks from India. They may be creating small pieces that can be used as placemats or floor cloths at the end of the session. They will also see examples of clothing and fabric made using this process and learn more about the rich textile heritage of India. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Canvas or thick fabric (we will have some too) if you have some thick material or clothing that you want to print onto, bring it. WE WILL SUPPLY: Wood blocks, sponge brushes, acrylic paint (if possible), gel medium to seal the work

15 WORKSHOP TITLE: Digital Drawing and Painting David Hockney Autumn Leaves Inkjet-printed computer drawing on paper WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR(S): Shane Walsh and Christopher Willey NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 DESCRIPTION: One of the coolest intersections of art and technology right now is Digital Painting. This is a beginners course that will allow students to experience drawing and painting using a Wacom Tablet within Adobe Photoshop! The software and technology will be set up so all you have to do is follow along with Shane and Christopher as they guide you through three different digital experiments over a two hour session. Sign up fast- space is limited to 15! STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: A flash drive WE WILL SUPPLY: Computer, Software, Wacom Tablet and Pen.
