POSITION GUIDE ORGANIZATION: POSITION: REPORTS TO: LOCATION: REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO President, RIC Advancement President & Chief Executive Officer Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Chicago, Illinois MISSION The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is dedicated to providing the highest-quality patient care through integrated research, scientific discovery, and education for the purpose of maximizing the recovery of the patients it serves. VISION To Advance Human Ability: RIC will serve as the world s leading scientific hospital for the innovation and application of new and more promising treatments that improve and eliminate the effects of injury, disease and debilitating health conditions. ABOUT RIC RIC s flagship hospital, located at 345 East Superior Street in Chicago, offers 182 beds for inpatient care and a wide scope of outpatient services. This is also the site from which all RIC research, education, and training emanates. Located on the medical campus of Northwestern University, RIC s flagship hospital has proximity and access to rich sources of academic talent, know-how, and infrastructure. Moreover, Northwestern Memorial and Lurie Children s are hospitals sharing the campus, allowing RIC to tap into leading medical, surgical, and trauma care expertise for the adults and children it serves. RIC also operates 40 additional locations distributed in wholly-owned or partnership structures with other hospital systems throughout the state of Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. RIC is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The following are additional relevant facts about RIC: Clinical Care: RIC is the only hospital of any kind in America to hold US News & World Report s #1 ranking for 22 years running, a recognition as the top rehabilitation hospital that RIC has held since RIC serves patients from around the globe; more than 50,000 patients from all 50 states and 68 countries were served in RIC serves adults and children with various conditions and is distinguished in its care for certain conditions: o injuries to the brain (of various causes); o paralysis and injuries to the spinal cord (of various causes); o peripheral and complex nerve conditions, including chronic pain; o severe muscle/bone impairments and complex limb loss; o neurological consequences of cancer. RIC hosts the only inpatient pediatric rehabilitation service in the Midwest. RIC is a TriCare provider for the US Department of Defense and serves the US Military by accepting the transfer of the most catastrophically wounded service members from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, as well as from other military treatment facilities. Research: RIC operates its own research enterprise, the largest of its kind in the world and broader in scope and scale than the few, other national competitors by a factor of three. RIC s researchers collaborate with researchers at universities from around the nation and world. RIC holds the #1 ranking from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for rehabilitation hospitals, with more than $75 million in active federal research grants; RIC holds six distinct federally designated centers for education and research, including: Stroke; Spinal Cord Injury; Bionics; Neural Engineering; Outcomes Research, and; Pediatrics RIC offers a wide array of fellowships, doctoral and post-doctoral, and serves as a powerhouse in training scientists in advanced techniques in rehabilitation research, biomedical engineering, and a number of related disciplines. Education: Since 1967, Northwestern University s (NU) Feinberg School of Medicine has housed its department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at RIC, headed by a department Chairman who is an RIC employee. Through the University s PMR department, RIC operates one of the largest and most prestigious rehabilitation residency programs in the nation. Nursing: In 2010, RIC was granted its second recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program for excellence in nursing services, making RIC the only rehabilitation hospital in the 2
nation to receive two consecutive 10-year designations. Through this achievement, RIC is positioned in the top two percent of all U.S. hospitals for nursing care. RIC s NEW RESEARCH HOSPITAL The work RIC has done so far in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation has been revolutionary, but it is just the beginning of a whole new era and RIC is taking the lead. In recent years, certain external market forces and emerging science have shaped the vision for the future of RIC. The mapping of the human genome, the speed and power of computing, the portability of technology, progress in materials science, and the new knowledge of molecular and cellular mechanics especially in the neurological system have radically changed the way RIC thinks about rehabilitation. Furthermore, the projected aging of the population is highly correlated with a growth in neurological impairments and disease. These forces have begun to shape new medical interventions and a great potential for recovery, beyond what exists today. RIC has continued to serve more patients every year. This increased volume of patients and demand for services over the last several years has taxed its flagship facility. RIC has no further capacity to meet the growing demand of patients, to unleash new potential for better outcomes through research, or to set the standards, educate, and widely disseminate knowledge in the way RIC is beckoned to do. In December 2009, RIC purchased a plot of land in Chicago, one block south of its existing flagship hospital, on which the vision for RIC will be implemented: a new research hospital to serve as the center for the transformation of rehabilitation care within the healthcare industry worldwide; a novel facility designed explicitly for translational medicine; an institution driven to Advance Human Ability and the world s first and only center to do so. In early 2013, RIC will complete the detailed design and construction planning for its new research hospital. The novel design of RIC s new research hospital is explicitly for translational medicine and is unlike any other hospital design, anywhere. RIC is leveraging its medical and scientific assets to create a new, 21st-century research hospital that will accelerate the pace of biomedical discovery and cures for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and many other conditions. All human-subject research, applied research, and proof-of-concept testing will occur embedded on the clinical units in futuristic and dynamic spaces called Ability Labs TM. Scientific research will not just coexist with patient care but will be fully integrated into the clinical environment surrounding and engaging patients in the process, and advancements will be turned into new treatments for patients faster and more efficaciously than ever. 3
The new research hospital will comprise: 1.2 million square feet total size, with 800,000 square feet for clinical/research programs; The World s only Ability Labs (five differentiated Labs); Up to 360 Inpatient Beds (twice the current capacity) ; Expanded Research Footprint (three times the current size); Expanded Outpatient Care (four times the current service size). RIC s new research hospital is intended to exude Ability and be a magnet to attract the world s best and brightest talent to achieve its vision. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR THE NEW RESEARCH HOSPITAL The construction of RIC s new research hospital is expected to take just over three years at a total cost of the project of $450 million. RIC plans to commence construction on the facility in May/June of 2013, with the new research hospital opening its doors to patients in September of RIC s goal is to fund $300 million of the total cost of the project through philanthropic gifts, and to finance the remaining $150 million through the combination of cash flow, existing funds, modest new debt, and the sale of its existing flagship building. As of January 2013, RIC has secured $160 million in philanthropic commitments toward its $300 million goal. A conservative trigger for ground-breaking has been set at securing $200 million in Campaign commitments. The remaining $100 million is to be raised over the ensuing four years from broad participation. Still in the quiet phase of the Capital Campaign and focused on principal and major gifs, RIC has not yet launched the external or public phase of the campaign, however this is anticipated to happen in the next few months and is related to the decision to break ground. PRINCIPAL ROLE The President of RIC Advancement will play a key role in raising the remaining commitments for its Capital Campaign through close coordination and partnership with the RIC President & CEO and the 75-member RIC Tree of Life Board. The Tree of Life Board is the foundation arm of the Institute, comprised of leading Chicago business, civic and philanthropic volunteers. In addition, an 80-member Women s Board, also comprised of leading corporate, civic and philanthropic volunteers, and an Associate Board of young adults, will provide a source of fundraising volunteers committed to the success of the new hospital. All will play significant roles in the campaign under the leadership and expertise of the President. 4
The President is also expected to develop and implement a broad-based, comprehensive fundraising program and oversee the growth and maturation of RIC s Advancement Department, which will include the following functions: major gifts; annual giving; planned giving; corporate and foundation giving; as well as develop the appropriate operating support in research, financial tracking, and database management. The opportunity afforded by the Capital Campaign to take RIC s Advancement Office to a higher, more sustainable level of philanthropic success is a significant part of the expected outcomes. CANDIDATE PROFILE We seek an advancement career professional whose enthusiasm about an opportunity to join a world-class clinical and research institution at the crossroads of medical and technological revolution is the key motivating factor.
