2 DEMONSTRATIONS Tools for a flipped classroom the basics NEW You don t have to re-invent the wheel: this demonstration is about finding and using resources. It s a basic session, appropriate for technophobes. Moodle Essentials UPDATED to include Moodle 2.5 features Moodle is a learning management system that forms the central hub for your students online learning at Coventry University. This demonstration is for new tutors or those who need to know the basics of how they can exploit Moodle for teaching purposes. Log into Moodle 2 Enter a module (course) in Moodle as a tutor (teacher access) Add an item to the News Forum Add and edit topics Add a link to a web site (URL resource) Add and edit a block Add a PDF file to Moodle Access the private files area in Moodle Access Mahara from Moodle 2 Add a colleague to a module (course) Mahara e-portfolio for your students UPDATED latest Mahara Tutors / TAs new to Moodle/Mahara This introductory demonstration is for tutors or TAs who have teacher access to a Moodle module. A Mahara assignment in Moodle enables tutors to give feedback to students on Mahara pages that they have created. Pages can contain their journal articles and external items, for example embedded YouTube videos. Tutors can also create pages. 3 Alternative presentation technology Improve your digital literacy Want to use something other than PowerPoint? This demonstration will show a variety of other technologies that you can use and some alternative things that you can do with PowerPoint, so that you can make your teaching more engaging. Moodle Gradebook and assignments (Online resource available) For people who need to be aware of the process that s involved in putting marks into Moodle and then moving them to Universe. This demonstration introduces the stages involved, from finding the assessment components (tutors, TAs) to uploading marks from Moodle to Universe (module leaders), introduces an online resource for you to use and shows you where you can get more help. Communicating with your students the basics Tutors / TAs new to Coventry University This is aimed for tutors or TAs who may have not used Moodle 2 before. This demonstration and discussion session will show how you can use Moodle s realtime quiz, forums for different purposes and how you can give feedback to your students. The demonstration includes: Realtime quiz A comparison between the Standard forum, QA forum and the News forum Mahara assignment Alternative communication strategies The discussion will be about best practice and use of a communications strategy with students. 4 WORKSHOPS Tools for a flipped classroom workshop NEW 2.5 hour workshop booking essential This session is the next stage from the basic demonstration. In addition, it enables you to see how to use media, things to consider when making your YouTube movie for an international audience and how to interact with your students. Topics include: Real time quiz Embedding YouTube videos Embedding audios Introduction to blogging NEW 2.5 hour workshop booking essential Would you like to keep an online diary? Showing the basics of creating messages and looking at good practice, this workshop is for people who want to get started with their blogging. Topics include: Defining the purpose of your blog and its messages What is a blog? Best Practice Writing a blog post What makes a good blog? Twitter RSS feeds Components of a blog Your new Moodle Course for course editors 1.5 hours (demonstration followed by open workshop time) This is for course directors and tutors who need to edit courses (Online resource available) The demonstration includes: Put your course above your module list Add a welcome message to your course Awareness of student year groups Organise separate sections (topics) for separate year groups Participants are expected to work on their own courses during the workshop time. 5 Flipping classrooms for technophobes 3 hours workshop Personal Digital Literacy This workshop is aimed for tutors or TAs who would like to have more time and help with setting up technology enhanced learning resources. In addition, the aim is to enhance the participants digital literacy skills. In particular, this workshop is for people that shy away from using technology. This session will have a small number of places and participants will have the opportunity to practice your skills in a sandpit web. Participants will have the opportunity to complete the following activities: Create a welcome message Add a link to an external open resource Use a Moodle Realtime Quiz Create a PDF file Create a web page and choose where to share it Access open educational resources Mahara with your Tutor Group 3 hours workshop Examples of how you can use Mahara groups. The workshop will enable your tutor group to be aware of options that you can use to help you organize your online presence. The aim is to demonstrate options, to facilitate a discussion and for the group to produce workable solutions.
