20 Overview of initiatives in Developmental Education Complete College America Mathways Project Non-Course Based Math + College Algebra Directed Self Placement Puente Project Reduction of courses from 3 to 2
21 Developmental Math Initiative Complete College America Description: Accelerate Developmental Math Sequence. Allows students who need extra help in math to enroll in concurrent remedial- and college-level algebra courses that require additional weekly tutoring. Results: CCA project shows high success rate. Students passed the College Algebra course and/or became College Ready Connection Entry Progress Completion Career
22 Developmental Math Initiative Mathways Project Description: The project is overseen by Dr. Uri Treisman. Purpose is to create a non-algebraic route for students who are pursuing a degree that may not require College Algebra. STC was selected as one of nine co-development partners charged to implement the project and then to mentor other colleges. Phase I: Statistic Pathway (Fall 2013) Phase II: Quantitative Reasoning (Fall 2014) Phase III: STEM pathway (Fall 2014) Connection Entry Progress Completion Career
23 Developmental Math Initiative Non-Course Based Math + College Algebra Description: New Pilot conducted during Spring 2013 semester Allowed students to co-enroll in a one hour lab (non-course based) and College Algebra. Results: Out of 72 students 57 students were successful (79% success rate). 41 students (57%) passed the College Algebra course and 16 (22%) became College Ready. Connection Entry Progress Completion Career
24 Developmental Initiatives English Reading and Writing Mrs. Graciela Farias, Board Secretary
25 Developmental English and Reading Initiative Directed Self-Placement Description: Students at the high end of the developmental placement scale have the choice to take Academic English with Webbased tutorial support. Results: Students skipped Developmental and succeeded in ENGL1301 (English Composition) Connection Entry Progress Completion Career
26 Developmental English & Reading Initiative The Puente Framework Four essential components: 1. An accelerated integrated writing /reading course 2. In-depth Advising of students in career and academic guidance 3. Mentoring by members of the professional community, who serve as role models 4. Professional Development for faculty is at the core of the model. Results: The Puente Cohort shows a higher success rate in completing DEV ENGL and completing the College English course during the following semester.
27 Developmental Education Initiatives Reducing course sequence from 3 to 2 levels Description Allows students who place in the lowest developmental levels to complete the developmental cycle in two levels rather than three. Results: New sequence courses compared to traditional sequence. Both Developmental Writing and Math courses show high success rates. Connection Entry Progress Completion Career
28 Developmental Education Initiatives Conclusions Successful Strategies Taking the College level course immediately after the developmental course Taking ENGL 1301 after the developmental classes College Algebra after Developmental Math Reducing the number of courses in the developmental sequence Concurrent enrollment in Developmental Math and College Algebra Same faculty teaching both the Developmental and the College level courses.
