1 Faculty in Action Department: MESA1 BACK 1. What initiative is your department currently involved in that promotes equity in course completion and/or retention? If you have more than one initiative that you would like to mention please include it as an additional entry. Title of Initiative: STEM Cohort Brief Description: First year students interested in STEM that has placed in Math 125/120 and English 101 are placed in a cohort of STEM contextualized courses throughout the year, with specific academic interventions and student services for success. Target Audience: STEM Summer Academy students & first-year ELAC students with a declared STEM major How does it work: First year students interested in STEM that has placed in Math 125/120 and English 101 are placed in a cohort of STEM contextualized courses throughout the year. Students are provided with textbooks and supplies, and have to attend mandatory SI coaching and tutoring. The math starts at Math 125, 120, 241 and finishes in 260; so the students are Calculus ready by the end of Spring semester. Each math section lasts 8 week. They are offered with Physics 17 (equivalent to Physic 11); and they will be done with their English as well. Who s involved: When does it take place Results of this initiative in your Department MESA/STEM Director, Coordinator and the faculty that teaches the course is an integral part of the initiative. As well as tutors and SI Coaches. Fall and Spring semester Success percentages in each of the math classes are equal or above 80, and the success of students (all Hispanics) in the sequence is 54%. For English success percentages in each class is equal or above 70, and the success of students (all Hispanics) in the sequence is 50%. 2. Title of Initiative: Student Progress Report Brief Description: Students have to turn in an academic progress report at the end of week 6 and 12 of the academic semester. Completed and signed by the instructor. Target Audience: All MESA/STEM students How does it work: Students have to turn in an academic progress report at the end of week 6 and 12 of the academic semester. The report includes all STEM and English courses, and it is completed and signed by the instructor. If a student is rated average, they are required to complete 3 additional hours of mandatory tutoring (in addition to what is been done). If a student is rated below average, they are required to do 5 additional hours of mandatory tutoring. The tutoring takes place at the MESA center, and there is a form to be completed by tutors certifying the numbers of hours. There is also a student self-refection component in the report, which helps us understand what services the student is using services such as faculty office hours, counseling, EOPS, YouTube reviews, etc. Who s involved: All STEM Faculty, STEM Advisor and Counselor and STEM tutors and SI Coaches. When does it take Fall and Spring semester place Results of this initiative in your Department The success rate of the cohort increased from 37% to 54% for the Fall-to-Fall success in Math from Math 125 to math If you have a new idea you would like to initiate in your department applicable to promoting equity list it here. If you have more than one initiative that you would like to mention please include it as an additional entry. Title of Initiative: Mandatory Counseling (with STEM counselor) Brief Description: MESA students are required to meet with the MESA/ STEM counselor for at least one hour per semester All active STEM/MESA members Target Audience: How does it work: MESA students schedule appointments to meet with the STEM counselor for at least one hour per semester. However, the STEM counselor also maintains an open door policy, whereby students may also come on a walk-in basis, call, , etc. In these sessions, the counselor works with students to update education plans, discuss educational/ career goals, plan for transfer, research, internships, scholarships, etc. Who s involved: When does it take place Results of this initiative in your Department The STEM counselor, who attends all general counseling meetings, and works very closely with the general counseling department to assure accuracy on campus policies and changes as they relate to student success. Each fall/spring, MESA students are required to meet with the MESA/ STEM counselor for at least one hour, however, there are often several more contacts per student each semester, via phone, , and drop in counseling and because the counselor works year around, student have access during winter and summer sessions as well. Per independent data provided by grant external evaluator, the STEM counselor has been found to be extremely highly rated in meeting the needs of STEM students. 2.
