7 Affiliated Council Program Activities for the Current Year July 1, June 30, 2014 Please tell us about pertinent Council/Organization Activities, including annual and regional meetings, seminars and workshops; information on new and on-going publications; and any other information that may be of interest to your colleagues and the AACC. This information will be photocopied and shared with all AACC Councils, and Board and Staff Contacts. At the AACC Convention, in celebration of the 40 years since American Association for Women in Community Colleges was first chartered, AAWCC members began a national dialogue that looks at how far women have come in 40 years and the key areas that continue to be a challenge for women in leadership. The dialogue will continue through April Also at the national convention, we hosted a booth in the Exhibition Space that we believe helped us grow our membership. We will do that again, as it gave our Board an opportunity to discuss the benefits of having an AAWCC chapter with the many attendees at the AACC convention. AAWCC is a grass-roots organization with a national board. Oregon chapters held their annual state conference, and individual chapters across the country were more active this year. Most had leadership meetings that focused on career and community. Many held some kind of social or networking activities, and fundraising/philanthropic activities. Philanthropic activities sponsored scholarships for students and staff, gathered supplies for children s centers and BACK-TO- SCHOOL drives, advanced breast cancer awareness, and assisted women s shelters. Many chapters were central to their college s activities related to Women s History Month events. Affiliated Council Program Activities for Next Year July 1, June 30, 2015 Please tell us about pertinent future Council/Organization Activities, including annual and regional meetings, seminars and workshops; information on new and on-going publications; and any other information that may be of interest to your colleagues and the AACC. This information will be photocopied and shared with all AACC Councils, and Board and Staff Contacts. As AAWCC moves beyond its 40 th anniversary celebration, the national board will look at data provided by local chapters, gathered as they host a Day of Dialogue or conversation. We are continuing a national conversation that will ask women, What issues are women still facing in 2014 and what new issues require our attention? The conversation will ask about the challenges to equity, advancement, and happiness that women still face. Chapters will report what women say about where AAWCC needs to focus in the coming years. 7
8 During , we will address leadership, high-wage STEM and nontraditional workforce careers, the Completion Agenda, child care, and women s health. All are issues that face women in community colleges, as employees and as students, and affect quality of life and work life. 8

A vendor booth at the 2013 AACC Convention in San Francisco allowed AAWCC to promote the benefits of membership in the organization. The trend of increased membership will very likely continue. Increased revenue made it possible to add a new model award for digital media and to bring back the Trustee of the Year Award. The success of the new program at the LEADERS Institute over the past three years allowed for the establishment of a quasi endowment for an annual doctoral scholarship and a LEADERS Institute attendance scholarship. At June 30, 2013 the organization had an unrestricted balance of $134,867 and a balance of $89,101 that is restricted for professional development and scholarships. 16 Celebrating 40 Years of Leadership In the summer of 1973, an EPDA-funded workshop entitled Woman: Her Challenge to the Community College was held at the City College of San Francisco. The grant proposal was written and the project directed by Eileen Rossi (CCSF) and Jan Brandstrom (Lane Community College, OR). The project brought together women from four western states Washington, Oregon, California, and Arizona to learn about programs for women in community colleges. Near the end of the four-week workshop, the group decided that what its individual members had learned and shared was too valuable to end. They decided to form an organization that would be called The American Association of Women in Community and Junior Colleges: Western Division and to investigate what would be involved in becoming a Council of AACJC. Letters were sent out to hundreds of women in two-year institutions throughout the country asking them to join in starting the new organization since it was necessary to show national potential in order to justify requesting Council status. Between 1973 and February 1974, approximately 200 women in 21 states had sent dues and committed themselves, at least for a year, to the purposes of the organization. AAWCJC was granted Council status at the national conference in The new organization also presented a forum at that annual conference and has done so each year since that time. Eileen Rossi, National Chairperson of AAWCJC, served as its representative on the AACJC Board from 1974 to Over time AAWCJC evolved to AAWCC and has matured as a fiscally stable, membership-based, leadership organization that champions and serves women in community colleges. Through advocacy, scholarships and awards programs, and as a national network, the AAWCC changes women s lives through education, service and leadership development. By developing a national conversation for women leaders, AAWCC strives to bring awareness, advocate for, and take steps to advance women in their leadership roles, and to continuously promote the value that women leaders bring throughout community colleges. Welcome and Introductions Dr. Allatia Harris, AAWCC President Of the Year Awards and Recognition Dr. Allatia Harris and Dr. Barbara Tower Carolyn Desjardins CEO Award 2014 for outstanding service and support to AAWCC Dr. Maureen Murphy, President Brookdale Community College Middletown, New Jersey Mildred Bulpitt Woman of the Year 2014 In recognition of outstanding leadership and mentorship to provide opportunities for women in community colleges Dr. Rebecca Ann Askew, Vice President for Planning and Institutional Research Pearl River Community College Poplarville, Mississippi Trustee of the Year 2014 In recognition of outstanding leadership to community colleges by a trustee Regina Lowrie Montgomery County Community College Blue Bell, Pennsylvania
17 Keynote Speaker Dr. Belle Wheelan Model Program Awards AAWCC Chapter Award Elgin Community College Dr. Wheelan currently serves as President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and is the first African American and the first woman to serve in this capacity. Her career spans 40 years and includes the roles of faculty member, chief student services officer, campus provost, college president and Secretary of Education. Dr. Wheelan received her Bachelor s degree from Trinity University in Texas (1972) with a double major in Psychology and Sociology; her Master s from Louisiana State University (1974) in Developmental Educational Psychology; and her Doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin (1984) in Educational Administration with a special concentration in community college leadership. She has received numerous awards and recognition including four honorary degrees; the Distinguished Graduate Award from Trinity University (2002), and from the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin (1992); Washingtonian Magazine s 100 Most Powerful Women in Washington, DC (2001); the AAUW Woman of Distinction Award (2002); the Suanne Davis Roueche National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development s Distinguished Lecturer Award (2007); the John E. Roueche National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development s International Leadership Award (2010); and the AACC Leadership Award (2011). The AAWCC Chapter at Elgin Community College describes itself as a small chapter of 33 members, but a mighty one, and indeed they are! Their main focus is to raise dollars to support female student scholarships, and each year they award five scholarships to deserving women students in the amount of $500. Specific scholarship fundraising initiatives include a basket auction, coffee fund-raiser, holiday raffle and a used book sale. The chapter works collaboratively with the college Foundation and employee donations can be designated to support the AAWCC Chapter Scholarships. Additionally the chapter focuses on community needs by donating gently used coats and clothing, food and career clothing for students in the Workforce Transitions program. This small but mighty chapter has made a difference for the women students and employees at ECC. AAWCC Program Award AAWCC Oregon Chapter Oregon Community Colleges The AAWCC Oregon State Chapter represents the 17 community colleges in the state of Oregon. In a strongly collaborative initiative the chapter creates a two-day conference that has been held annually in the fall for 27 years! Community college women facilitate and present the workshops to provide professional development opportunities for the women in the state s 17 community colleges. The chapter s mission to inspire, champion and celebrate the talents within each person was again realized with this year s conference theme of Reboot, Refresh, and Restore; Igniting Your Potential. The conference had 177 people register as well as many volunteers, facilitators, and presenters. Unique in its offering across the state, this program provided leadership and professional development, showcased women in leadership positions, celebrated individuals who have made a difference. As the Chapter application stated, We ve been making this soup for a number of years and have a great recipe!
