2 AACC AFFILIATED COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT Under the guidelines established by the AACC Board of Directors, each AACC-Affiliated Council is required to submit an annual report by August 15 of each year. The report should cover the period July 1 - June 30, which is the Board approved reporting year. Please provide all information requested. Failure to submit a complete report by the due date may result in withdrawal of affiliation. Information about activities will be posted on the AACC Web site. Reports will be made available to the Board Liaison and Staff Contact for each Council. 8 Leadership Programs AACC is interested in partnering with the Affiliated Councils on various leadership programs. Publications Please list any and all publications by your Affiliated Council. Community College Humanities Review - peer-reviewed journal. The Community College Humanist - tri-annual newsletter. Advancing the Humanities Through Bridging Cultures Programs at Community Colleges Monograph featuring programs from the NEH funded Bridging Cultures Project. Statement of Affiliated Council s Purpose and Goals Please include a statement of the overall purpose and goals of this Council/Organization. The guidelines for affiliation require that a Council s bylaws support the purposes and objectives of AACC. CCHA Purposes: To advance the cause of the humanities in community colleges through its own activities and in cooperation with other institutions and professional organizations involved in higher education; To provide a regular forum for exchange of ideas on significant issues in the humanities in higher education; To encourage and support the professional work of faculty and administrators in the humanities; To sponsor conferences, seminars, and institutes to provide opportunities for faculty and curriculum development; To promote the discussion of issues of concern to humanities education and scholarship and to disseminate information about the Association's activities through its publications. 8

9 Affiliated Council Program Activities for the Current Year July 1, June 30, 2014 Please tell us about pertinent Council/Organization Activities, including annual and regional meetings, seminars and workshops; information on new and on-going publications; and any other information that may be of interest to your colleagues and the AACC. This information will be photocopied and shared with all AACC Councils, and Board and Staff Contacts. COMMUNITY COLLEGE HUMANITIES ASSOCIATION 1. CCHA held its national conference on October 24-26, 2013 at The Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY. The host college was Jefferson Community & Technical College. The National Distinguished Humanities Educator Award was presented at the national conference to Kathy Fedorko (Middlesex County College, NJ) and Jeff Clausen (Green River Community College, WA). The Literary Magazine Competition Awards were presented with American River Review (American River College, CA) taking the national honors. 2. The NEH funded project, "Advancing the Humanities at Community Colleges: A NEH Bridging Cultures Project," concluded with a final conference in December 2013 in Washington, D.C. The 18 participating college teams were competitively selected from over 80 applications. The selected colleges were: Black River Technical College (AR), Community College of Baltimore County (MD), Delaware County Community College (PA), Delta College (MI), Georgia Perimeter College (GA), Heartland Community College (IL), Kanawha Valley Community & Technical College (WV), Kirkwood Community College (IA), Hopkinsville Community College (KY), New Hampshire Technical Institute (NH), Peninsula College (WA), Phillips Community College (AR), Pierpont Community College (WV), San Antonio College (TX), St. Louis Community College (MO), South Piedmont Community College (NC), Tarrant County College, SE Campus (TX), Trident Technical College (SC). The 18 college teams presented their programs and submitted case study reports designed for faculty to replicate humanities faculty development programs, revised course materials and/or new course materials nationally. Panel presentations were made at the annual meetings of the AACC, the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians. 3. CCHA collaborated with the National Humanities Alliance to sponsor Humanities Advocacy Day the conference and the advocacy activities in Washington, D.C. in order to strengthen Congressional support for the National Endowment for the Humanities and other agencies, including the National Archives and the Library of Congress, that support the humanities. CCHA serves on the planning committee. 4. CCHA sponsored a Forum, Breakfast, Reception and an Exhibit Booth at the AACC Convention, April 5-8, 2014 in Washington, D.C. 5. CCHA held a Board of Directors meeting in conjunction with the AACC Convention. 9

10 6. CCHA conducted its annual Literary Magazine Competition. Awards were announced in September 2013 and faculty advisors and student editors were recognized at the National Conference in Fall 2013 in Louisville, KY. 7. CCHA published Volume 33 in Fall 2013 of the Community College Humanities Review under the direction of Ned Wilson, editor, Essex County College (NJ), and the tri-annual newsletter, The Community College Humanist, edited by Jacob Agatucci at Central Oregon Community College. 8. CCHA sponsored the NEH Summer Institute, "Pictorial Histories and Myth-Histories: 'Graphic Novels' of the Mixtecs and Aztecs," on site in Mexico, June 29 - July 26, Directed by George Scheper (Community College of Baltimore County) and Laraine Fletcher (Adelphi University), the summer institute served 24 competitively selected community college, college and university faculty. CCHA will hold five regional conferences in Fall 2014 as follows: The Pacific-Western Division conference will be held October at Hotel 1000 in Seattle, WA, and the host colleges are Seattle Community College North and Central Oregon Community College. The conference theme is Humanities: The Heart of the Matter. The Southern Division conference will be held at the Hilton Downtown Tampa Hotel. Hillsborough Community College is hosting and the conference theme is Southern Sensibilities. The Central Division conference will be held November in Indianapolis, IN. Ivy Tech is the host college, and the theme is Humanities at the Crossroads. The Southwestern Division conference will be held in Austin, TX at the Hilton Garden Inn. Austin Community College is hosting; the theme is Creativity: Heart of the Humanities. The Eastern Division conference will be held in Baltimore, MD at the Inner Harbor Holiday Inn. Community College of Baltimore County is hosting. The theme is The Future of the Humanities: Becoming What We Need to Be. Conference programs are posted on the CCHA website at 2. CCHA will sponsor four NEH funded 2015 Summer Institutes: (1) Transcendentalism and Reform in the Age of Emerson, Thoreau, and Fuller will be conducted in Concord, MA. The two-week summer institute is directed by Sandra Petrulionis (Penn State) and Diane Whitley Bogard (Austin Community College); (2) The three-week summer institute, Native Grounds: Studies of Native American Histories and the Land, is directed by George Scheper (Community College of Baltimore County) and Laraine Fletcher (Adelphi University) and it will be held at the Library of Congress; (3) Gregory Warden (Southern Methodist University) is the director of The Etruscans and Early Rome, a three-week summer institute held on site in Italy; (4) Paul Benson (Mountain View College, TX) will direct the two-week summer institute titled Slavery in the American Republic: From Constitution to Civil War, to be held at the Library of Congress. 5. CCHA will continue to collaborate with the National Humanities Alliance to sponsor Humanities Advocacy Day both the conference and the advocacy activities in Washington, D.C. that aim to strengthen Congressional support for the National Endowment for the Humanities and other agencies supporting the humanities. CCHA serves on the planning committee. Dates have not yet been announced. 6. CCHA will sponsor a Forum, a Breakfast, a Reception and an Exhibit Booth at the AACC Convention in April in San Antonio. The Board of Directors meeting was held in conjunction with the AACC Convention. 7. CCHA will conduct its annual Literary Magazine Competition. The 2014 winners will were recognized at the national conference in Phoenix, AZ, November 5-7, CCHA will publish (pending) Volume 34 (Fall 2014) of the Community College Humanities Review under the direction of Ned Wilson, editor, Essex County College (NJ). The tri-annual newsletter, The Community College Humanist, is edited by Jacob Agatucci, Central Oregon Community College (OR).
