6 YOUR STUDY OPTIONS There are many different paths to gaining a postgraduate qualification from UTS Business School. Our programs are offered in a range of different formats that provide alternative entry paths and study durations, including graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, masters degrees and extended masters degrees. Graduate Certificate The graduate certificate comprises of the first four subjects of the masters degree *. It is designed for those who have an undergraduate degree in another disciplinary area, and applicants with no undergraduate degree but extensive practical experience in the area of study. The course will provide you with the key building blocks before undertaking advanced level subjects in a graduate diploma or masters program. Graduate Diploma A graduate diploma consists of the first eight subjects of the masters degree. It provides you with the core knowledge of your study area, allowing you to develop foundation competencies as well as some specialised, more advanced skills. Masters Degree Our most popular and well-recognised postgraduate offering; a masters degree equips you with a professional level skillset and a thorough grasp of theoretical foundations and how these are applied in your field. Many of our masters degrees also fulfil the requirements for recognition and qualification by leading professional bodies across a number of fields. Extension Masters Degree An extension masters degree offers the opportunity to further explore a particular area of study beyond the conventional masters structure, allowing more flexibility in subject choices and giving you a stronger element of diversity in your education * With the exception of the EMBA (see page 10) and the MBAe (see page 12) ** The Master of Quantitative Finance consists of 9 x 8 credit point subjects. Many of our courses allow for recognition of prior learning, giving you credit for subjects you ve already completed and helping you to complete your studies sooner. Credit may be granted where your previous study is deemed equivalent to UTS subjects. Associate Professor Peter McGraw Director, Executive MBA Programs The UTS EMBA is a program for experienced mid-career managers looking to prepare themselves for senior roles. The program is selective, and designed to address the needs of a small cohort of working executives looking for a rich and engaging educational experience. How this program works The UTS Executive MBA consists of 11 integrated subjects that develop your strategic capability across key business decision-making fields. After 9 subjects you choose between either the Innovation and Entrepreneurship or the Global Immersion Stream. Entry into the EMBA Eligible candidates will typically have an undergraduate degree combined with significant management experience. If you have other qualifications and very extensive managerial experience but no undergraduate degree, you may be eligible to enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Executive Business Administration. The Graduate Certificate (EMBA) consists of the first three subjects of the Executive MBA. On successful completion of the Graduate Certificate at a credit average level you can articulate to complete the full Executive MBA. Our EMBA provides the intellectual frameworks and tools required for senior positions and many opportunities to apply these to real organisations. Peter is an award-winning academic and teaches within the EMBA. He researches and publishes in a variety of areas concerned with leadership, management and human resource management. Peter is the author of over 70 academic articles and book chapters as well as three textbooks. With the MBAe, we want to show you how to be on the winning side of that equation. James has over 30 years of management experience in the insurance and financial services industry in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States. He completed his graduate work at the American Graduate School of International Management, and a BA in philosophy from Randolph-Macon College in Virginia. Working within the accounting field meant that I was living and breathing accounting 24/7 when I was a student. I would learn things in class and then be able to practice them the next day at work. UTS Business School is a great place to be and learn. In my experience, if you want a university experience that will equip you with the knowledge to help with your future career, UTS is the best choice. 18 FINANCIAL ANALYSIS ACADEMIC PROFILE Dr Lorenzo Casavecchia Lecturer The structure of the Master of Financial Analysis at UTS is one of a kind in Australia as it allows students to gain an in-depth knowledge of a wide range of instruments to conduct advanced financial analysis. Students will not just develop well-rounded accounting and finance skills but also be able to master the art of security analysis and corporate valuation. Led by a highquality faculty and top practitioners, they will gain access to the latest finance research, software and techniques that are necessary to gain a solid grounding in this discipline. Lorenzo has been the recipient of numerous Best Paper Awards for his research. He has collaborated with the Bank of New York (BNY) Mellon, Capital Dynamics, Salix Alba, Contango Asset Management, among others. Previously, Lorenzo worked as senior equity analyst at Morgan Stanley and as bond trader at Intesa Private Banking. In 2014, Lorenzo assisted the Parliament of Australia, Standing Committee on Economics. His research has been covered by the BBC World News, The Washington Post, Reuters, and the AFR. The Master of Financial Analysis will enable you to develop advanced level expertise in a range of contemporary accounting and finance areas. 20 FINANCE ACADEMIC PROFILE Dr Deborah Cotton Lecturer Deputy Head of Finance The broad structure of the Master in Finance at UTS allows students to specialise in their area of interest while maintaining the broad base of knowledge. The academics here have an extraordinary high quality in their research and are passionate about teaching. This ability to combine both the latest research and practice based knowledge in our programs is most enjoyable as a teacher and the best of both worlds for the students. I strongly believe that by incorporating ethics and sustainability into our finance program it makes us, and our students, leaders in the field. Deborah is a Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Finance Discipline Group. She has recently completed her PhD in Applied Finance conducting a study into the efficacy of emissions trading schemes. She also completed a Master of Environmental and Business Management and a Bachelor of Business with honours in Finance. Prior to academia Deborah worked in stockbroking for six years. The Master of Finance will develop the comprehensive range of skills and expertise required to put you at the forefront of your professional practice. Completion of the Master program meets the educational components to become a member of the Finance and Treasury Association (FTA) (by application) at the Certified Finance and Treasury Professional (CFTP) level. Completion of the Master or Graduate Diploma program provides you with 300 or 200 points respectively towards becoming an Associate of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA) (by application). 22 QUANTITATIVE FINANCE STUDENT PROFILE Jun Li Actuarial Analyst Macquarie The Master of Quantitative Finance at UTS Business School is one of the best of its kind. It is highly regarded in the investment and finance industry. I believe it has a very good balance between its technicality and applied nature, which gives it a great job prospect as has been proved by previous classes. Working full-time and studying part-time simultaneously can be demanding, but it can also be fun. I have been taking 2 subjects in each semester and that means for 2 nights in a week I need to come to lectures after work. I actually find it a great way to alternate your mindset between a professional and a student as it reminds me to keep an open mind to learn. I enjoy living my life to the fullest. The Master of Quantitative Finance will provide you with the full gamut of specialised quantitative finance skills. You will develop professional competencies required to work as a quantitative finance specialist in the modern finance industry. Hone your skills to apply quantitative finance to advanced financial instruments, experience an integrated approach to risk management and learn how to implement quantitative finance strategies. I feel I m now able to look at a problem from a variety of different standpoints from marketing to accounting, research and development and human resources, to form organisational strategy. Focusing on a problem from this holistic perspective makes me a better project manager. I was working through most of my degree.
