2 UYDEL Has been in existence since 1993 Vision: A transformed society where young people live a good quality of life free from exploitation. Mission: To enhance socio economic transformation of disadvantaged young people through advocacy and skills development for self reliance. 2

4 Targets Children and young people aged years who are vulnerable to sexual exploitation and consequently to HIV/AIDS and other reproductive health problems specifically: Children commercially sexually exploited. victims of trafficking and other worst forms of child Labour. Slum youths. Out of school young people. Street children / children out of families. Teenage/ Adolescent mothers. Youth from poor families. 4

7 Tobacco problem in Uganda Socially acceptable drug The Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, 2006 revealed that 22% and 4% of Ugandan males and women respectively between 15 and 49 years were using tobacco. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 2007 revealed that 5.5% of years old students smoke cigarettes, while 13.9% of them use other tobacco products. 7

12 UYDEL & NGO SMART NGO SMART is implementing a contract concept in secondary schools where students sign one year renewable contracts. During the duration of the contract, the individual is obliged to completely abstain from using any tobacco products (chew tobacco/ snuff, Shisha as well as nicotine free tobacco). 12
13 UYDEL SMART Meetings Held planning meetings with SMART in May
14 UYDEL SMART Two SMART representatives visited Uganda in September They visited 2 primary schools and 2 secondary schools. Administered questionnaires to students. Data analysis and report writing by SMART. 14
15 UYDEL SMART Will develop a training manual training head teachers and parents. Conduct a one day dissemination and training workshop for head teachers of schools. Conduct a one day dissemination and training workshop for parents of students. One day training for UYDEL staff. 15
16 UYDEL SMART Actual implementation of the SMART programme starts with pilot in seven schools targeting children in primary five and primary six. Aiming at children years of age. Follow ups and supervision of project activities. Writing of final report of the SMART programme in Uganda and development of a new proposal to expand the SMART project. 16
