It aims to implement effective actions to protect children and safeguard as well as promote their rights to grow up in a safe and suitable environment. Programs in Italy Alternative care in Italy (from 1998) FADV is carrying out projects in most of its regions, with out-of-family children of all ages offering them alternative care (4 residential care centres, 2 day-care centres, networks of foster families). More than 400 children have been taken care and 60 foster families have been trained and activated. Supporting programs for alone-mothers (from 2007) FADV has been working with alone mothers and their children (130 family nucleus) in 5 cities of 5 different regions, offering them services in support of their independence. Education for Development in Schools (from the school year ) FADV has been running the project New Planet, a project of education for development and promotion of active citizenship and children participation. The project has been involving more than children and their teachers in 6 regions and it is now active in Catanzaro and Lamezia (Calabria) and in Rome and its province.
Combating Gender Violence (from November 2010) FADV has been running an anti-violence centre for abused women, giving legal and psychological advice including a secret safe House for Domestic Violence Victims in Sardinia which has been involving 40 women. Youth Programs Fundamental Rights for youth in vulnerable suburbs Youth Projects in Italian big cities suburbs have been led by Fondazione L Albero della Vita from 2011 to enhance and support children participation and prevent illbeing, social exclusion and school dropout-prevention: 8 projects have been implemented in 7 cities including learn to go sailing, media education, theatre, cinema, social media circus and street games. Non-accompanied Minors From July 2010 FADV has been focusing also on non-accompanied Afghan minors in transit in Italy (Rome area) seeking asylum in Northern Europe, giving them protection and safeguard: street action and leading legal and pedagogical support has been involving more than 600 children. Advocacy and Networking FADV has been implementing lobbying, research and awareness-raising actions on Italian and European level to promote child rights issues, multiple discrimination, poverty, social inclusion and promotion of a childhood-driven culture, gender equality and violence against women, specifically on female genital mutilation, in cooperation with Italian Ministries and local authorities, as well as European networks and Institutions, such as Eurochild network, CRIN (Child Rights Information Network), Fundamental Rights Agency, IFCO (International Forster Care Organization).. In this framework of research and awareness-raising actions the online project Children Platform ( should be mentioned: it is an online library on child rights and best practices on development focused on children and women. FADV is the General Secretariat of the European Network ChildrenLeftBehind.eu ( collecting non-governmental organizations, centres for social studies and Universities who co-operate at national, regional and European level for the protection of the rights of children involved in migratory events and the support of transnational and migrant families. European Programs In 2010 FADV was granted by the DG Justice, in the framework of the Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Programme, for the implementation of the multi-country project Children s rights in Action, aiming to conduct an organic research on the condition of Romanian children and youths migrating from Romania to Italy and Spain, and to identify the challenges they face in their integration process. The project started the 1st of March Projects in Eastern Countries Since 2009, FADV supports activities in Romania Moldovan Region designed to
tackle negative effect of labour migration on children and youth. The project Home alone aims to reduce risks associated with parental migration on children and to activate local institutions and resources to promote the wellbeing and the protection of children and youths in Iasi County. The project provides psychosocial assistance to children left behind and promotes the empowerment of local capacity to protect children and youths. International Development Cooperation Programs Since 2006 FADV has been promoting Actions aiming to protect and foster the rights of children in developing countries. Nowadays, FADV implements development cooperation projects and researches in the field of children's rights protection in Peru, India, Haiti and Kenya. Children are the main beneficiaries of our interventions, together with their families and the communities they live in. The main strategy of FADV has been focused on promoting development projects in a participatory way with integrated approach, addressing to the economic and social exclusion of the most vulnerable groups in the target Countries. Seeking for Coordinator Partners X Project proposal Main covered fields Target group Objectives Results Transnational Family National stakeholders involved in the assistance, protection, formal and non formal training of migrants and their family. Improve the understanding of the phenomenon of transnational family among relavant stakeholder - Experiences, methodological approaches and good practices related to the management of the transnational family are exchanged among partner organizations and relevant stakeholders involved in the protection and assistance of transnational family; - Elaborated and disseminated a new methodological tool to be used in the work with migrants and their families. Activities The partners involved in the project are NGOs assisting and protecting migrants and their family left behind, research centres and universities focused in the study of migration and transnational family as well as addressing methodological issues in the study of the phenomenon. They come from several European countries i.e. Italy, Spain, France, UK, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria and Poland. They provide their expert staff to gather together into a team and participate in multicountry seminars (a kick off meeting, eight thematic seminars and a final seminar). Specifically The project develops through four phases.
1) Kick off partner meeting organised in Italy. PARTICIPANTS: travelling team of expert (think tank). ACTIVITIES: o presentation on the project aims, objectives and approaches, results and outcomes; o presentation steps in the project activities, expected results and common responsibilities; o the experts present their own countries and main issues related to transnational family s protection and good practices examples in each partner country; o thematic discussions; o identification of key-issues within the topic of the transnational family (e.g. long distance parenthood, transnational motherhood and fatherhood as distinct phenomena, children left behind and related issues, the role of caregivers, use and impact of remittances on family members, communication across long distances, the effect of immigration law on transnational family and on family reunification); o identification of key-questions about specific situations and case-studies. These questions will be submitted to relevant national stakeholders involved in the assistance, the protection, the formal and non formal training of migrants and their families (such as social workers, teachers, members of the public security, lawyers). Through this action, the project intends to put them in the role of decision makers facing a problem and gain inputs to be discussed in the following seminars. Moreover, by involving relevant stakeholders, the project aims to promote the active participation and bring visibility to experiences of actors working directly with migrants and families left behind; o After the kick off meeting selected stakeholders are asked to answer to key questions within a set time and to present proposals addressing specific situations or the case-studies. The think tank collects the responses and selects the most relevant. 2) In its own country, each organization organizes a thematic seminar, for a total of eight seminars. PARTICIPANTS: - travelling think tank - selected stakeholders ACTIVITIES: Each seminar develops into two sessions: o Public Hearing. The main purpose of the Public Hearing is to obtain comments from participants regarding specific subject matter, to explain their proposals and to discuss. The national stakeholders are invited to participate to the Public Hearing taking place in their own country (no mobility to another country is provided for them). The think tank introduces the Grundtvig Learning Partnership Programme, the rationale underlying the Public Hearing, the analytical frame about migration and protection of transnational family and the specific topic to be addressed during the seminar. Afterwards, the Public Hearing takes place. It represents the key-participatory approach of the project during which the think tank and the selected national stakeholders motivate, analyze and compare proposals and responses to the previously identified key-questions. They share their comments, individual
experiences and challenges surrounding migration and protection of the transnational family. o Round table. The experts discuss about an identified key-issue, exchange experiences, good practices and methodological approaches as well as formulate ideas to cope with the challenges characterizing the protection and management of transnational family. 1) Final seminar in Italy PARTICIPANTS: travelling team of expert (think tank). ACTIVITIES: o analysis of the results of the Public Hearings and Round Tables; o organization of the research material; o elaborate a new methodological tool such as Guidelines or an Handbook. 2) Dissemination of the methodological tool among relevant stakeholders to be used in several areas of transnational family s protection. Outcomes Methodological tool (Guidelines or Handbook) to be used by stakeholders in the work with migrants and their families left in the country of origin.
Potential partners - NGOs assisting and protecting migrants and their family left behind - Research centres and universities focused in the study of migration and transnational family as well as addressing methodological issues in the study of the phenomenon.
