1 CLINICAL THERAPY & REHABILITATION DIRECTORATE INFORMATION PACK FOR PROSPECTIVE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS
2 INFORMATION PACKAGE FOR PROSPECTIVE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS IN CALDERDALE & HUDDERSFIELD GENERAL INFORMATION The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust formed in April 2001 following the merger of Calderdale Healthcare NHS Trust and Huddersfield Healthcare Services NHS Trust. On the 1st August 2006 the Trust gained foundation status, becoming only the second in West Yorkshire to achieve it. The Trust employs 5,300 staff and has an operating budget of more than 200 million serving a local population of 435,000. We are based at various sites in Huddersfield including the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, St Luke's Hospital, Holme Valley Memorial Hospital and various community sites and educational premises. Calderdale sites include the Calderdale Royal Hospital completed in 2001, locality-based outpatient sites, community sites and educational settings. The hospital provides state of the art facilities and a dedicated rehabilitation department. Mental Health Services became part of the South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust in April All the staff within the Clinical Therapy & Rehabilitation Directorate work towards a set of standards incorporated into our Caring for You document. Geography Both Huddersfield and Calderdale are situated on the edge of the Pennines. Communications are excellent with the M62 allowing easy access to Greater Manchester, Liverpool & Hull; M6 routes to Scotland, the Midlands & West of England and M1 routes to the Midlands, South East & North East of England. Rail networks provide easy trans-pennine access, with London only 2 hours away from nearby Wakefield and international airports at Manchester and Leeds/Bradford are easily accessible.. Within Yorkshire, local universities are at York, Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield and we offer student placements to students from all of these. Social & Leisure Huddersfield is the administrative base for Kirklees Metropolitan Council, which includes Dewsbury and Batley. The town centre is pedestrianised for easy shopping and most major chain stores have shops in the town. It is also a thriving cultural centre. The town s concert hall famed for its acoustics is home to the internationally famous Huddersfield Choral Society and Mrs Sunderland music competition. The annual Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival attracts visitors from all over the world and the superb Lawrence Batley Theatre offers a varied dramatic programme. The Galphram stadium is a major concert and sports venue. 2
3 Calderdale boasts many musical activities, museums, cinema, theatre, arts & crafts and special interest societies and is home to the historically famous Piece Hall. Sports facilities are well provided for, including a leisure centre offering discount to Trust employees. Within a few minutes from the town, you can reach remote Pennine moorlands and secluded valleys. The Pennine Way passes through Calderdale and the 50-mile Calderdale Way offers a challenge to hikers. There are famous professional sports teams to cheer on in the area, for example, rugby league football teams, Halifax RLFC and the Huddersfield Giants R.L.F.C. There are sailing clubs at a number of local reservoirs, hang gliding and horse riding centres. The nightlife locally offers cosmopolitan restaurants, bars and theatres. For those who want to dance the night away, Manchester, Leeds and Bradford are a step away. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES The Occupational Therapy Service forms part of the Clinical Therapy & Rehabilitation Directorate, which is based within the Medical & Elderly Division of the Trust s structure. The Directorate was awarded the Government Charter Mark in 2004 for excellence in public service. STAFF The Trust employs more than 80 qualified occupational therapists in a range of full-time, part-time and job share contracts. HOURS Full-time hours are 37½ per week. How these hours are worked depends on the rotation.
