Help people in the UK who are suffering with cancer and are struggling to support their families. Our Fundraising To make this inspirational project happen we need your help. What your money will buy: 7 buys a sick child a Hugs Bear to cuddle during treatment 17 can provide a child with a Bear-able gift bag filled with fun and distracting toys 300 can help pay a families bill and stop them loosing their home whilst a parent or child is undergoing cancer treatment 2,000 provides life saving cancer medicine to a child in the developing world Even a 1 can help us save lives by promoting research and educating people on how to prevent cancer There are hundreds of different ways you can raise money for our children s project, whether its organising a quiz or karaoke night, dressing up or baking cakes for your office. But we suggest you keep it simple and most importantly choose something you think you ll enjoy. Whether you d like to fundraise alone or as part of a group you ll find loads of great fundraising ideas and activities in this guide. In addition you ll find tips to help maximise your fundraising efforts to achieve even more, such as Gift Aid, Match Funding and Just Giving. Thank you 2
A Check out our A-Z of ideas for inspiration. When deciding how to fundraise stick, think about your interests and skills. Creating an event related to your hobbies can be a great starting point for successful fundraising. By sticking to something you know you will be more confident and can have lots of fun in your endeavours. But don t be put off if you want to do something completely different, sometimes stepping far out of your comfort zone for charity can make people more likely to donate. For instance if your friends know you aren t a fan of heights but you plan a fundraising skydive how an they say no! Afternoon tea invite friends or colleagues round for tea and cakes, or ask them all to do the baking and have a competition. Raise money by charging an entrance fee, for refreshments or by having a cake sale. Auction of promises auction off services and favours rather than goods (for example car washing, lawn mowing and decorating). You ll be amazed how much people will pay for someone else to do their ironing. B Bike Rides choose a local route or sign up to one of our biking challenges (see the website for details), fancy cycling from London to Paris in September? Bingo - plan a night out at the local hall and donate all your winnings or plan a bingo night yourselves, just make sure you get the calls right! Balloon Race - ask a local balloon or party shop to sponsor your event, hold it in a local park or community garden. Try charging 2 a balloon and see whose goes the furthest. Remember to release them all at the same time for the best effect! C Tips on Planning Make a to-do list for your event so you know everything is organised. The key considerations are: Venue - where is suitable for your event? Could you get somewhere for free? Date - make sure it doesn t clash with any holidays, big national fundraisers or key local events. Resources - what do you need to run your event successfully? Can you borrow equipment from local clubs/groups? Will a local business help you out with donations? Publicity - who is your audience? How are you going to tell people about your event? Volunteers who can help you plan your event? Will you need help on the day? Who can you ask? Car Wash - an oldie but a goodie. Choose a venue with access to running water and a good sized car park. You ll need plenty of volunteers to help with the washing but this can easily become a great money spinner. Company Fundraising - get everyone at the office involved, creating competition between departments will increase interest...and funds! Did you know? Cancer Recovery UK is part of Cancer Recovery International, we have sister charities in the USA, France, Canada & Germany. 3
D Dog Walking - get outdoors and active whilst raising money! Hold a sponsored walk around the woods or charge for walking other people s dogs to raise money. Dress Down or Dress Up Day - ditch the company dress code or your uniform for a day and dress in a particular colour or theme for the day. Participants pay for the chance to take part and raise money. Duck Race - you ll need lots of plastic ducks (all numbered so you know who the winner is) and a river to make this work. You could give people the chance to bring their own duck from home. If you get lots of interest run several smaller races rather than one large one, so you don t need to get hundreds of ducks. Charge people to enter. More about our International Aid: Each year millions of lives worldwide are affected by cancer, however the medicines and treatments necessary to fight this disease are not available to all. In the UK we have the NHS that provides us with all the treatment and care we need for free, but not everyone is this lucky. That is why Cancer Recovery Foundation works in partnership with hospitals in developing countries; sharing ideas about integrative care with medical staff and providing life saving medicine for thousands of patients. Past recipient countries include Kenya, Vietnam, the Philippines and Guatemala. Our latest batch of medicine was sent to the Kibasibi Foundation in Ghana and distributed between the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the local Police Hospital and the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The medicines Cancer Recovery provided were used to treat over 25,000 people. E Ebay (or other auction sites) - get rid of all your old junk, clothes and nick-nacks buy selling them on auction sites and donate the proceeds to Cancer Recovery. Expert Talk - this could be about anything that you think would interest your friends. Ideas include trees, nature, cocktails and cars. F Fifty/Fifty Club get everyone to donate 1.00 a month (or more) and hold a draw on the last day of each month. Someone wins half the total raised and the other half gets donated to charity. Football Tournament - charge each team to enter and ask spectators for donations whilst they watch. You could also charge for refreshments. G Garage Sale ask your neighbours to contribute all their unwanted bric-a-brac and sell it outside your house Glee Evening use a local venue with a stage to hold your own Glee tribute night. Charge an entrance fee for people to attend and advertise for volunteers to perform on stage. Guy Fawkes Party if you have a large garden or field nearby, organise a firework display and charge for admission and refreshments. 4
H Halloween either at home or at a local venue, hold a fancy dress party with spooky theme. Charge for entry and refreshments. Harvest Festival Dinner - ask your friends to contribute the food and ask for donations to Cancer Recovery. Headshave (or beard, chest/legs wax...etc) - get sponsored whilst getting a new image! I Indulgence evening charge your friends an entrance fee to join you for an evening of pampering - get manicures, pedicures, massages, hair and make up tips as well as champagne and chocolate organised for luxurious evening. Invent your own - these ideas are only a starting point. J Knitting either knit to order and ask people to make a donation to Cancer Recovery, sell the items at a local craft fete or get in touch with us and we ll send you some knitting patterns so you can make the toys we send to the children yourself. L Live life on the edge try one of our Challenge Events and get sponsored to do something daring. Choose from a variety of activities including parachuting, skydiving, cycling from London Paris, climbing Kilimanjaro, trekking the Sahara or cycling across Africa! Lottery you ll need to read up on the rules and regulations, but a monthly draw at work or in your group can work really well as a fundraiser. Loud days (shirts, ties etc.) - charge people a fee to wear the loudest (and worst taste) tie or shirt they can find, to work or school. Jewellery recycling party invite your friends to bring their unwanted jewellery. We will provide you with the donation envelopes, simply post and a donation comes to Cancer Recovery. Jogging get fit while raising money! Get sponsored to jog around your local wood. Jubilee Party involve everyone in your street by holding a street party to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in Charge an entrance fee/and or hold games and competitions with entrance fees to raise money. K Karaoke night you ll need to get the proper equipment (you can hire this-just search for it on the internet) and charge people an entrance fee and for refreshments and donate the proceeds to Cancer Recovery. It s a Knockout - charge a fee for people to enter competitions in your local pub or sports centre; popular choices include darts and snooker. Gift aid is great it means that we can get an extra 25% when a UK taxpayer donates to us (we get the tax they ve already paid). If you re doing an event involving sponsorship make sure that people fill in their details on the donation form provided and tick the gift aid box! 5
M Marathon there are so many marathons around the country that you can get sponsored to complete. Places in London are particularly competitive so apply early to be in with a chance. Open Gardens do you have (or know anybody with) a wonderful garden? Open it to the public for an afternoon and charge for entry and refreshments..you could also ask for donations in exchange for gardening tips and cuttings. Orienteering/Treasure Hunts use your local woods as a venue and charge people an entrance fee. P Pop up Restaurant turn your home into a bistro for an evening and ask your guests to make a donation instead of paying for their food. Pubs game evening ask your local pub to help out by hosting a games evening. Darts, skittles, pool, crib and dominoes are all popular. Q Quiz Night there are loads of pre made quizzes, questions and answers available online to help you get started, you can divide it into categories or have a quiz with an overall theme. Find a venue, advertise locally and charge an entrance fee per team and for refreshments to make money. Quit it - take your non day a step further and give it up for good. This could be a great incentive to give up smoking, chocolate, alcohol and so on - might not want to give up the internet or s for this challenge though!. R Match Funding Many companies run a scheme where they will match any fundraising carried out by their staff. Find out if your employer offers to match funding and you could end up doubling your total donation! Race Night organise an event at your local horse, dog, car or bike circuit to raise money. Or you could use recordings of old or foreign races instead of the real thing no cheating now! Sweepstakes for famous races etc (Grand national etc) are also an easy way to raise money but be sure to split the money between Cancer Recovery and the winner to stay within the law. Raffle an old favourite but always a good fundraiser! Ask local companies to donate the star prizes and get your colleagues and friends to donate lots of smaller prizes too. 9 Tips to Maximise Your Fundraising. Getting publicity is key for a successful event. Here are some helpful hints to ensure you get the maximum amount of donations and support for your event. Produce Posters/Leaflets to let people know what you re up too; can could use the ones included in this pack as a guideline. Make sure the time, date and place of the event are all clearly listed and that it is readable from a distance. Tell everyone you can think of about your fundraising activities. See if your local supermarket, church, schools, library, council or club have a notice board don t forget about your workplace, community centres, doctors surgeries and even hairdressers. Local papers and radio stations are always looking for people doing interesting things, why not get in touch before your event and let them know what s going on and see if they will send a photographer. If not take your own photos and write about your event to send them afterwards, this should help raise awareness and might secure you some last minute donations. For an example press release enquiries@cancerrecovery.org.uk. Set up your own webpage or use your existing pages on Facebook, Twitter etc to tell people what you re doing. One of the best sites for online fundraising is Just Giving. Sign up to fundraise with Cancer Recovery at On your sponsorship forms/online donation pages try and ensure the first donation on each new page is a large one, this helps others follow and decide how much to give. With an online page you could also add any offline donations you receive to help boost your total. You can always get in touch and tell us about your event. We will help you promote it on our Facebook page, Twitter Stream or on our website. Did you know? 80,000 cases of cancer could be avoided every year thanks to healthier diets and more exercise. Make sure everybody knows what you are doing! Keep fundraising after your event 20% of donations arrive after an event has been completed, so don t stop until you ve contacted all of your supporters with news of your success. If you would like more information, a mock press release, posters or a copy of our logo Just us on: enquires@cancerrecovery.org.uk Did you know? On average each year cancer is responsible for 18% of all deaths in children aged 1-14yrs. 9
Advice Whilst we are extremely grateful to anyone who endeavours to raise money for us Cancer Recovery Foundation cannot accept any liability for any loss, damage or injury as a result of your fundraising activities. We therefore urge you to consider the legal and health and safety concerns that could affect your event and read the advice below. Keeping it Legal The following are some basic steps you can take to help ensure your event is legal: Publicity Materials All your publicity materials, including tickets and posters must include the words: Raising Funds in Aid of Cancer Recovery Foundation UK, Reg. Charity No (England and Wales) Reg. Charity No. Scotland SC We are happy for you to use our logo to tell people of the connection between your fundraising activity and ourselves. Please contact fundraising@cancerrecovery.org.uk to get a copy of our logo. However Cancer Recovery Foundation cannot authorise you to act as an agent for or on behalf of the charity so your fundraising and publicity materials must not say that you represent us. Selling goods We are not registered to trade (as there are VAT implications for this) therefore when you have a stall, or similar, you cannot put fixed prices on things: you can only list prices for things as a suggested donation. Collections If you would like a collection tin for use on private property, please fundrasing@cancerrecovery.org.uk. We need to keep a record of where it is sited and who will have responsibility for it. If you would like to organise a street collection, pub crawl or house to house collection you will need a license from your Local Authority. This is free but can take a while to sort out as they may be booked up with other charities. If you wish to collect in a privately owned space (such as inside a train station or shop) you must get permission from the company who owns the building. You will also need to make sure all collectors at your event are over the age of 16. Keeping it Safe If you are organising your own event, we recommend that you draw up a plan in advance, thinking about these topics. Insurance Think about whether you may need to take out one off insurance for your event. If you are fundraising as part of a group or company your fundraising may be covered by their insurance or by the venue where the event is held. You should check this with the company concerned and ask the owner or manager of the venue about their own public liability insurance. Cancer Recovery s insurance does not cover property or personal liability for any injury suffered by yourself or anyone else as a result of your fundraising. Risk Assessment You may need to carry out a risk assessment for your event, the Health and Safety executive has lots of information on undertaking a risk assessment on its website at Location Make sure your venue is accessible to disabled participants and that you have all the permissions you need to use the routes and exits/entrances to your location. First Aid If you have members of the public at your event, you may need first aid cover. If you have doubts speak to your local St John s Ambulance about any first questions. Other considerations You may also want to examine what fire safety/evacuation procedures, training and equipment might be needed for your location. Raffles If you are organising a lottery such as a raffle, tombola or sweepstake you need to be aware that there are strict laws concerning what you can or cannot do, as it is classed as a type of gambling and subject to much legislation. Raffles that take place on one day i.e. during one event or are only open to one closed group of people (e.g. Staff within a workplace) can use cloakroom style tickets. Any other type of Raffle requires printed tickets, so is not often cost effective. For further details look at the Gambling Commissions website at Licenses If you are planning to sell alcohol at a public event, you must check if the venue is licensed, if you need to obtain a temporary license, contact your Local Authority for advice. Food current food hygiene regulations, visit You may also need to obtain a license if your event requires performances, ask your local authority about the needs of your event. Did you know? Alcohol is responsible for around 13,000 cases of cancer a year in Britain alone. 10
