Youth Sport Trust Fundraising Guide
OUR VISION Youth Sport Trust: sport changes lives Our charity is passionate about helping all young people to achieve their full potential by delivering high quality physical education and sport. Every young person s life can be transformed by PE and sport whatever their age or ability. We do this by working in partnership with schools, sponsors, government, sporting organisations and most importantly young people Baroness Sue Campbell CBE, Chair, Youth Sport Trust
Youth Sport Trust: sport changes lives Established in 1994 by Sir John Beckwith and Duncan Goodhew: the YST has been changing the lives of young people through PE and sport for nearly two decades. By using the power of sport, we invest in young people as the foundation of our society and provide a development pathway to adulthood. We know that by raising the quality of PE and sport in schools through high quality interventions, we can improve standards, increase achievements and raise attainment levels to have a fundamental impact on young people s lives Sir John Beckwith CBE President, Youth Sport Trust
ABOUT US The Youth Sport Trust is a UK charity devoted to changing young people s lives through physical education (PE) and sport. There are three key strands to our work: Giving every child a sporting start in life through high quality PE and sport in primary schools Ensuring all young people have a sporting chance by developing opportunities for those with special educational needs and disabilities Supporting all young people to achieve their sporting best in school and their personal best in life We use the power of sport to impact on young people s lives throughout the world. Our international work has created global links between schools and students from over 300 schools and 45 countries. Independent research shows that PE and school Sport can make a contribution to many agendas educational achievement, public health, community cohesion and, of course, sporting performance at the highest level. You can help us make a real difference to the lives of young people improving health and wellbeing, increasing participation, unlocking potential and developing employability.
Youth Sport Trust: Our programmes We develop innovative sport, PE and education projects and interventions to support young people whatever their age or ability. These interventions range from: Training teachers to make PE lessons high quality and engaging for primary school children Using sport as a way of helping youngsters who may be struggling at school to raise achievement Developing innovative activities to include young disabled people in PE and sport Introducing new ways for young people to lead and volunteer in sport in their community Running training camps for the next generation of Olympic hopefuls Our work is UK-wide, but we also undertake an impressive international programme of work

Some good advice We want to do all we can to help your fundraising. So before you get started, please check these guidelines. To start you off: If you are organising your own fundraising event, it may be helpful to look at the Institute of Fundraising website for some helpful hints. Collections: You must have a licence or permit from your local authority if you want to hold a street collection, workplace or school collection. If you would like any collection tins/buckets please contact Ellie Cassidy on or [email protected]. The law requires that all collection materials are sealed and numbered, which we will also be able to provide you with. Keep it safe: Guidance on how to complete a risk assessment for your event can be found at the Health and Safety Executive Food hygiene: This is really important when using any food for fundraising purposes. Please take great care when handling food and work to basic rules for safe preparation, storage, display and cooking. A Food Standards Agency booklet 'Preventing Food Poisoning - Good hygiene at home' can be downloaded from the Food Standards Agency. Raffles and prize draws: There are strict legal requirements about the organisation of raffles, lotteries and prize draws. Helpful information about these rules can be found at the Gambling Commission. Gift Aid: For every 1 people sponsor you, we can claim an extra 25p back from the Government. That is an extra 1 for every 4 donated. Maximise your fundraising by reminding your family, friends and colleagues to tick the Gift Aid box, and included their name and address, if they are a UK tax payer.
Use our logo to promote your event Our logo represents who we are and what we do. It is our most important visual asset and should be used prominently and consistently to help build familiarity with our brand. We want to be seen and recognised wherever we appear, so the following guidelines have been developed to promote us clearly and consistently across different applications. Always allow as much clear space around the logo to help it stand out. Avoid putting text, imagery or other graphic elements too close to it. Similarly, don t position it right at the edge of a page, screen or board. The illustration shows a fixed clear space zone around the logo this is the minimum recommended allowance and should be greater whenever possible. For more information on brand guidance please [email protected]
Good practice After the money has been raised: Where possible ensure two people are around when money is being handled and counted. Collect cash using a secure container e.g. a sealed container for a collection or a secure cash box for change. When carrying money around take care. Always use a safe route and always be with someone and/or carry a personal alarm. If you are confronted by someone demanding the money, do not put up a fight, hand them the money straight away and report the matter to the police. Put money in the bank as soon as possible. Are children involved in your event? If children are going to take part in your fundraising event, there are some things that we would like to bring to your attention for their safety and your protection: Make sure the environment is safe for children attending your event, e.g. cars, equipment, doors, toilets, facilities for lost children, etc. If you plan to hold a crèche/supervised play area for children you need to seek advice from your Local Authority Social Services Department. If you have asked other adults or organisations to provide a service at your event for children, please check their insurance safety certificates and ask for references and their Criminal Records Bureau check. Do not take photographs of children without their parent s permission.
