1 JOHNSON COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE Transfer Program to Wichita State University General Education Requirements College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Catalog 11/14 CONTACT: LAS Advising Center PHONE: HOME PAGE: The Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the A.A. may select courses that satisfy both the A.A. degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor s degree at four-year institutions. The 33 hours of electives within the A.A. allow students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The A.A. degree requires completion of 64 credit hours, the maximum number of hours from a community college that will be applied toward a bachelor s degree at most four-year schools. Meeting with a JCCC counselor is strongly recommended for selection of appropriate courses. E The Johnson County Community College courses listed below meet general education requirements at Wichita State University. Students beginning at Johnson County Community College and with at least 24 earned hours at Johnson County Community College can use the Wichita State University General Education requirements. E Further MATH information: If further math is needed for major, continue with Trigonometry (MATH 172) and Calculus I (MATH 241) OR begin at calculus level if qualified. E Courses to begin LAS majors: In the first two years of college, your program may include one or two courses that begin the major. Students transferring 48 or more hours to LAS must declare a specific LAS major or degree preference during the first semester of enrollment. The best initial courses for LAS majors are listed below by type: Anthropology (BA) ANTH 125 Cultural Anthropology 3 ANTH 126 Physical Anthropology 3 ANTH 150 People and Cultures of Mesoamerica 3 Biology (BA or BS) (Start CHEM 124/125 and 131/132 early. 3 3 E Other Requirements: Liberal Arts and Sciences also requires: English or foreign language literature (counts as Humanities introductory course): HIST 140 U.S. History to 1877 OR 3 in Humanities POLS 124 American National Government 3 in Social Sciences One course in biology: One course in physical science (Chemistry, Geology, Physics): (One of the sciences must include a laboratory. Science majors should consult with a WSU advisor to ensure meeting specific major or accreditation requirements.) Foreign language is required for all BA students and for the BS in Criminal Justice. If no high school background, pass first two classes (5 hours each) and 5 hours intermediate level in one language. If two years high school, pass 5 hours intermediate level in same language OR first two classes (5 hours each) in new language. Because 45 hours of upper division credits (junior/senior level classes) are required for a degree, begin foreign language studies early in your college program. E Graduation Requirements: 124 credit hours minimum* is required for Bachelor of Arts (BA) Bachelor of Science (BS) Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) 60 hours minimum* must be completed at a 4-year institution. *Note: Students who transfer more than 64 hours from a 2-year institution must still complete 60 hours at a 4-year institution. Therefore, the transferred hours plus the 60 hours required at a 4-year institution will exceed the 124-hour minimum required for graduation from WSU. In addition, some degrees at WSU already require more than a 124-hour minimum. 45 hours of upper division coursework (300 level and above) at a 4-year institution. Note: Credit from a 2-year institution cannot be used to satisfy this requirement, regardless of the transfer equivalency number. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in both the overall hours and in the hours taken only at WSU to remain in good academic standing. Some majors and minors require a GPA above 2.0. Consult your academic advisor for details. 30 hours minimum must be completed at WSU to earn a degree from WSU. 24 of the last 30 or 50 of the last 60 hours must be completed at WSU to earn a degree from WSU. BGS degree: No more than 30 hours from one department, no more than 30 hours outside LAS will count toward graduation. BA degree: No more than 45 hours in the major will count toward graduation. BS degree: No more than 50 hours in the major will count toward graduation.
