1 2010 Educational and Community-wide Programming: MS Chapter Our programs are designed to increase the understanding of Alzheimer s; identify ways you can maintain your brain health; learn coping skills for difficult communication and behaviors, and to identify resources for daily living, medical care and legal assistance. These programs can be provided over a period of weeks or offered together at your convenience. Each program briefly describes information to be covered and who should attend. Most programs are free, but those requiring extensive materials may require a small donation or registration fee. If special equipment is needed to conduct a program such as TV/DVD player it will be noted. Alzheimer s 101: Understanding the Basics of Alzheimer s Disease Why does Grandpa blow his nose in the white bread? This program will help to explain the difference between Alzheimer s and dementia; recognize the warning signs; go over the stages of Alzheimer s; causes and risk factors and early and late on-set. This is general information and appropriate for persons with Alzheimer s, family members; friends; facility staff and community members. Length: 30 minutes-1 hour Early Detection: Know the 10 Warning Signs It may be difficult to know the difference between age-related changes and the first signs of Alzheimer s. As part of its public education effort, the Alzheimer's Association has worked with a wide range group of experts to update its 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's to make them more current and user-friendly. The comprehensive review process included feedback from health professionals, clinicians, scientists and people with dementia. This presentation can be done in either a one or two hour session. Appropriate for the general public. Communication and Behavior Challenges As the disease progresses, learn how effective communication tips make all the difference in meeting daily challenging behaviors. This information can be presented as general information or in-depth, as well as, separate topics or combined topics. Appropriate persons to attend are family members, friends, facility staff and community members. Length: 1-3 hours (TV/DVD)
2 Maintain Your Brain- An Interactive Workshop Learn how to live a brain-healthy lifestyle and potentially reduce one s risk for Alzheimer s disease. This workshop helps to provide tools to make brain health part of your overall wellness goals. Appropriate for all audiences. Length: 1-1 ½ hours (PowerPoint or overhead projector) Alzheimer s and Safety Programs These programs help to provide a sense of security and safety for caregivers; family members; community members; facility staff law enforcement and first responders (police, firemen, EMT s). Topics may be combined into one program or separated for a shorter program. Alzheimer s and Safety Learn tips for a safe and supportive home to care for your loved one with dementia. Also learn how to stay and safe while traveling; driving; using medications and avoiding wandering or getting lost. Appropriate for caregivers. Length: 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours. Safety in the Community: Medic Alert + Safe Return and featuring Comfort Zone Since 6 out of 10 people with Alzheimer s will wander, you can t know when it will happen, but through these educational programs you will learn the warning signs and know what to do when it does happen. This program is appropriate for families, friends community members, law enforcement, first responders (police, firemen, EMT s) and facility staff. Length: 1, 2 or 3 hours. Banning Bingo! Creative Dementia Activities Discover ways to stimulate your loved one with dementia by entering into the realm of creative dementia based activities. Keep in tact the skills, talents and independence that remains with simple, yet imaginative activity ideas that will help to both encourage positive behavior and reduce boredom with your loved one on a daily basis. This program is ideal for facility staff (nurses and activity directors/assistants); caregivers and family members. Length: (45 minutes-1 hour). Support Group Facilitator Training Caregivers of those with dementia are under constant stress and need more local resources. Learn what it takes to become a support group facilitator in your area. This training applies to health care workers. Length: Completed by mail, and conference calls.
3 Nutrition and Alzheimer s This program is designed to help people understand the importance the role of good nutrition can be for both the person with Alzheimer s and the caregiver. The program provides four (15) minute programs that can be delivered separately or together. (1 hour) A Caregiver s Menu (15 minutes) Caregiver stress can cause poor eating habits and an unhealthy lifestyle. Learn how to design daily meal plans that fit your hectic lifestyle so you may remain healthy and energized for your hectic routine. Enhancing the Mealtime Experience (15 minutes) Learn practical ways you can avoid mealtime confusion and overcome the challenges to a good diet and nutrition for your loved one with Alzheimer s. Fuel the Brain! The Brain Diet Makeover (15 minutes) Find out about brain healthy foods and how eating brain healthy foods can help to reduce your risks of getting Alzheimer s disease. Alzheimer s and Nutrition at a Glance (15 minutes) This program provides an overview of the Food Guide Pyramid and basics of good nutrition for people with Alzheimer s. Bridging the Generation Gap: The Benefits of Intergenerational Programming Partnerships are essential in today s world. This program discusses the importance of intergenerational programming for those with dementia and children. Examples are given of different intergenerational programs throughout a variety of communities and their structure. This program is appropriate for facility staff and the general public. Length: (40 minutes). Teen Talk What s happening to Grandpa? Alzheimer s disease can have a big impact on every members of the family, including children. Learn how to talk to your children and teens about Alzheimer s disease and help them understand the changes the disease might bring, now and in the future. Program is appropriate for the general public and encouraged for both generations. Length: (30 minutes).
4 MS Chapter of the Alzheimer s Association Presents.Lunch and Learns! Any of the programs offered by the Alzheimer s Association may be part of the monthly Lunch and Learn programs as well as special speakers in the community starting in February All programs are free and open to the public. Tuesday, February 23, :30am-12:30pm Home Instead Senior Care, 807 Monroe Street Clinton, MS Cooking Under Pressure and Fuel the Brain! The Brain Diet Makeover Home Instead Senior Care s presents an excellent program that will provide nutrition tips and recipes for seniors to promote a well-balanced diet and healthier lifestyle. Alzheimer s Association will help one discover brain healthy foods and how eating brain healthy foods can help to reduce your risks of getting Alzheimer s disease. Tuesday, March 23, :30am-12:30pm Baptist Healthplex, 102 Clinton Parkway Clinton, MS Caregiver Stress Presenter: Dr. Gary Mayfield, LCSW, ACSW Learn ways to deal with the stress of caregiving and how to care for yourself for a change! This program will be presented by Dr. Gary Mayfield, Professor of Social Work and Dean of the Social Work department at Mississippi College Tuesday, April 20, :30am-12:30pm Nutrition and Alzheimer s Presenter: Janet Scruggs, R.D., L.D. Operational Dietitian at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital Gain knowledge of the importance the role of good nutrition can be for both the person with Alzheimer s and the caregiver. Tuesday, May 25, :30am-12:30pm Hospice Ministries, 450 Towne Center Boulevard Ridgeland, MS Hospice Care After the Diagnosis Presenter: Donna Evans, LSW Lunch will be provided by Hospice Ministries Learn what the next steps are and how to plan ahead for the family after being given a diagnosis for a terminal disease such as Alzheimer s.

Family Orientation Starting in February, each quarter the MS Chapter of the Alzheimer s Association will be conducting Family Orientations. There is no fee to attend. Please call the Mississippi Chapter of the Alzheimer s Association at or us at info@msalz.org to sign-up. Please stay tuned for future dates and locations of orientations. The orientations are designed for families of recently diagnosed individuals and for those individuals in the community who would like to know more about what information and resources the MS Chapter can provide. Orientation covers overview a brief overview of the disease, discussion of the first steps to take after receiving a diagnosis and what resources are useful in the community.
