Dorothy Worthington, from Walkdn, was amongst th first rsidnts to mov in. Th 84-yar-old, who has diabts and struggls with mobility issus, has livd in supportd accommodation for 20 yars sinc hr husband passd away, but has now bn givn a nw las of lif thanks to hr nw hom. Dorothy s daughtr Jan Klly, 58, says: W nd mor schms lik this to mak sur that oldr gnrations hav a scur plac to liv. My sistr and I both work, so w can t b around 24/7 to look aftr our mum. Knowing that sh is in a plac whr sh can maintain hr indpndnc, but also provids accss to support whnvr sh nds it is rally important to us. Joyc had suffrd with Alzhimr s for around fiv yars, but th passing of hr husband last yar had sparkd an acclration of th disas. Sh had fiv childrn, ight grandchildrn, and 13 grat-grandchildrn, but as is oftn th cas th family was sprad out across th North Wst. Joyc s granddaughtr Sam xplaind: It was hart-braking bcaus w wr a 25 minut driv away in Wigan, and always worrid about my grandma. Th family was always vry nrvous and w wantd to chck that sh was okay.

City Wst has rfurbishd 28 apartmnts providing nw kitchns, bathrooms and communal loungs, with construction contractor Emmanul Whittakr carrying out th work. Rsidnts ar also st to bnfit from lowr ful bills, aftr nrgy-fficint photovoltaic (PV) solar panls wr installd on th roof. Th projct is part of our 15 million programm to rnovat 12 shltrd housing schms. Clbrating 60 yars at Qun s Clos, Worsly Rsidnt Goff Platt and his wif Ida who hav livd at th shltrd schm for ight yars said thy wr dlightd with th improvmnts mad to thir hom. Qun s Clos in Worsly first opnd its doors in 1954 and was on of th first shltrd schms in th country to includ sparat individual bungalows with a wardn on-sit. Dorothy Parr, a 74-yar-old rsidnt living in th Engls towr block in Barton Villag, succssfully runs th Barton Villag Ladis Club and is alrady planning to tak advantag of th nw facilitis. Dorothy said: W r a vry clos-knit community, so it s important that w hav somwhr to bring vryon togthr. Th rgnration of Barton Villag is part of City Wst s 54.3 million invstmnt to rfurbish 12 towr blocks across Eccls. Th programm bgan in 2010 and work on all blocks st to finish in 2016.
