1 Support for Mental Health and Wellbeing Mental health is about how we cope with life s stresses and strains. We all haves days when small things feel overwhelming and we need some help and support. Our mental health is affected by a number of factors including social, economic, environmental and biological causes. It is also influenced by our ability to talk about problems and find the right kinds of support. This information has been produced to make it easier to find support available for patients living in the Great Horton area. Bradford and Airedale Mental Health Advocacy Group User-led mental health organisation providing independent advocacy support, helping people to say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain the services they need. Advocacy for anyone suffering mental ill health or mental distress at Lynfield Mount Hospital, Moorlands View, Airedale Centre for Mental Health or within the community across Bradford and Airedale. Statutory advocacy services for people subject to sections under the Mental Health Act and for people who are unable to make specific life-changing decisions (assessed as lacking capacity) under the Mental Capacity Act. Link Project feeding back views of service users and carers about the services they receive in to service planning. Training and support for people who wish to be volunteer advocates. Quality Performance Mark for all advocacy services. Referrals are taken from anyone including service users and professionals. Tel: [email protected] Web: Bradford Community Environment Project (BCEP) Community food-growing activities have been at the core of BCEP's work for over 15 years. It works with a very diverse array of local people and groups, providing a range of engaging and highly stimulating environmental activities. It has a number of outdoor food-growing sites across the district including allotment spaces in the Haycliffe Lane, Scotchman Road and Queen's Road areas and at Wibsey Park Community Garden, which hosts healthy eating sessions, social therapeutic horticulture sessions and group growing activities. It is able to deliver to a wide range of people including single-sex groups and those with disabilities or mental illness. Tel: Web:

Also floating support and community integration. Supports male victims of domestic abuse (including members of same-sex relationships). One-to-one and group counselling for anger, stress, aggression, violence and abuse in home, workplace or public spaces. Group sessions Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. It provides a Bradford-wide information service (recently awarded the Information Standard) and an emergency planning service, giving carers peace of mind and reassurance should an unpredictable incident occur. Tel: Web: Foundation - Bradford Broadacre House Annexe, George Street, Bradford BD1 5AA Mentoring of socially excluded individuals including drug and alcohol support, mental health support, ex-offenders/offenders and young people/leaving care. Minimum age 18. Matching people who may be further on the road to independence with those who may need extra support- complementing the work of housing support worker team/s. Referrals accepted Monday Friday 9:30 4:00. Support, motivational work and harm minimisation sessions for customers with substance misuse related issues, signposting and referral to other agencies. 3 Guide-Line A telephone information and helpline available 365 days a year 12:00 9:00. Offers support to those in mental and emotional distress along with family members, carers and professionals. Assists people on an ongoing basis as well as those in crisis. Languages: Punjabi, Urdu Tel: [email protected] Horton & Wibsey Bereavement Care Association Mrs V Carter, 35 Markfield Avenue, Low Moor, Bradford BD12 0UL Provides help and emotional support for the bereaved in Great Horton, Little Horton, Wibsey and the surrounding area. One-to-one counselling is available at the group or the client's own home, in addition to a 24-hour telephone answering service. All bereaved people are welcome at the weekly support group, which meets at Great Horton Methodist Church Wednesdays 2:00-3:30. Volunteers are required to undertake care of bereavement counselling training. Leaflets are available by request. Tel: Mind in Bradford Ground Floor, Tradeforce Building, Cornwall Place, Bradford BD8 7JT A mental wellbeing drop-in service providing social, practical and emotional support. This consists of various therapeutic and recreational activities; learning and volunteering opportunities; trips out; men- and women-only groups. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 5:00 9:00, Wednesday 11:30 3:30 (men only), Friday 11:00 3:00 (women only). The organisation also offers a health and wellbeing service providing a range of activities in the community to help people maintain mental wellbeing. Provides therapeutic and support groups, drop-in groups, ESOL classes (via external organisations), advice sessions, advocacy, information and outreach. 4 Polish Befriending Service 17 Edmund Street, Bradford BD5 0BH This befriending and outreach service provides support for Polish and European communities. An outreach service is provided by two outreach officers. The Polish Community Centre runs on Wednesdays and social day care on Fridays. On the third Monday of each month there is a wellbeing cafe. Tel: [email protected] Sharing Voices - Help for BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) Communities St Paul s Church, Manningham, Bradford BD8 7LP Offers a range of self-help groups for men and women. Services include befriending, volunteering and training opportunities. The organisation is aimed at adults and young people from BME communities. Visits are made to schools to provide one-to-one support around emotional & mental wellbeing. Assemblies and group work also undertaken. Asian women s group. Tuesday 12:00-2:00. Men s group. The scheme aims to assist clients with day-to-day living and equip them with the skills required to live more independently in future. 6 Bradford Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Survivors Service c/o Bradford CVS, Sunbridge Road, Bradford BD1 2AY Provides a helpline and face-to-face counselling for women and girls who have experienced sexual violence or abuse at any time in their lives. Emergency and ongoing support. Service can accompany women to the police station, courts and doctors and provide information on police, court and medical procedures. Works with children from 5 to adults. Works one-to-one, with parent and child and with families. Offers minimum of 6 sessions with a range of client-centred approaches including solution-focused, CBT and animal-assisted therapy. Support available includes art-based activities, group relaxation sessions and a computer class. It also offers a range of complementary therapies, a counselling service and a headwear for hair loss service. There is access to welfare rights advice and a drop-in information service. Tel: [email protected] Web: Caring and Sharing 7th Floor City House, Cheapside, Bradford BD1 4HR Relate Bradford is providing a safe, confidential place for carers aged over 50 to talk to a trained counsellor about how caring for a loved one makes them feel. It offers free counselling to carers over 50, caring for a family member, partner or friend who is confused or suffering from dementia, is frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. Counselling can help carers deal with difficult feelings such as guilt, anger or resentment and also enable them to look at their own health and wellbeing and plan for the future. Relate may

7 also be able to arrange for a sitter from the Time Out team to sit with your loved one whilst you attend sessions.
