Maj lmark novels of Mexico will be examined in their social histical context. Designed to acquaint non-spanish maj students with Mexican thought, values, literary heritage relative to wld literature. CS 115 Literature of Latin America (3) ; UC A survey of Latin American Literature which covers several epochs, genres, auths, cultures, countries, literary movements in Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean. Some countries will st out me than others because of the accessibility of literary wks in translation. CS 120 Introduction to Sociology of the Chicano (3) ; UC The Chicano the Chicano community within contempary American society seen from a sociological perspective. Includes socialization/acculturation of the Chicano the Chicano s role in societal institutions - family, marriage, religion, education, economics. CS 125 The Histy of Mexico (3) ; UC A survey of the political, economic, cultural development of the Mexican people nation from the pre Columbian period through the Revolution of CS 130 Contempary Mexican Culture (3) ; UC In-depth study of contempary Mexican culture from the twentieth century to the present. Through an interdisciplinary approach, exples multiple aspects of Mexico s current trends in the political, histical, social, cultural realms. Includes the Mexican Revolution of 1910, Cristeros War, PRI s sphere of influence, student movements, Mexico s current political system, U.S.-Mexico relations, Mexico s current transition towards democracy. CS 135 Mexican Art Histy (3) ; UC Study of a broad spectrum of Mexico s arts through its literature, music, theatre, dance, visual arts from pre-columbian times to the present. Topics may include various musical literary genres, folklic dances, sculpture, paintings. Designed to increase knowledge appreciation of general Mexican arts culture. Explation of Mexican histy social development as it is expressed in its artwk. Highlights include analytical approaches to cultural syncretism as well as field trips to perfmances, film screenings, exhibitions to galleries museums. CS 155 Ancient Civilizations of Meso America (3) Note: Cross listed as ANTH 155 ; UC Civilizations of Pre Columbian Mexico Central America with a focus on their igins achievements. CS 161 Elementary Classical Nahuatl (3) Note: Cross listed as AIS 161/FL 161 ; UC This is an introducty course on the Classical Nahuatl language of the Aztec Empire. School Age Assistant Assistant Teacher PROGRAMS OF STUDY Child Development courses prepare students f employment as an aide, teacher, / direct in a preschool a child care center (including infant/toddler facilities), family child care providers, other Child Development careers in early childhood education fields. Courses are also appropriate f parents, nannies, recreation leaders, camp counsels, elementary school teaching assistants (some classes may be used as a foundation f elementary school teachers), social services health care practitioners, early childhood administrats, others wking with young children. Community Care Licensing State Regulations require students who wk with young children to have a minimum of 12 unit in Child Development. CHDV are required ce courses. Students can choose two other curriculum 3 unit CHDV courses to complete the 12 units. Suggested courses are CHDV 105, 125, 130, 135, 140, 185. Certificates meet the course requirements f teachers, site superviss, directs of private child care programs licensed by the Califnia State Department of Social Services (Title 22), Community Care Licensing. The program also meets the course requirements f the Child Development Permit issued by the Califnia Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Child Development programs that are state funded federally funded (Title 5 programs such as, Head Start, state preschool, etc.) follow the Child Development Permit matrix. In addition to the course wk listed in the certificate, students must have experience wking with young children in der to obtain an actual Child Development Permit from the State of Califnia. In der to earn any of the Child Development degrees certificates, students must achieve a minimum grade of C in each of the required courses. CHDV 121 is highly recommended f all Child Development Students. CHDV 108 Developmentally Appropriate Principles Practices (1) 1 hour lecture This course is designed to introduce Developmentally Appropriate Practices Early Learning Stards. A focus will be placed on current best practices in curriculum activities, methods, materials appropriate f planning a program f young children. Techniques f incpating Early Learning Stards into Developmentally Appropriate curriculum will be expled. CHDV 110 Introduction to Special Education (3) Provides an overview of special education in the United States, including the histical antecedents, legislation, disability categies covered by IDEA. Discussion of societal, family, classroom issues relevant to children with special needs. Focus on fostering understing respect f people with differences, their families, the professionals that serve them. CHDV 112 Early Intervention Inclusion (3) Recommended preparation: CHDV 110 This course focuses on the theies, research, practical applications of special education in an early childhood setting, specifically with children from birth to age 8. Topics covered will include curriculum modification accommodation strategies to facilitate the development of cognitive, mot, social, emotional, language skills in infants, toddlers, young children with disabilities. Specific emphasis will be placed on developing classroom behavi management plans, collabative teaching strategies, understing the IFSP IEP process as it relates to early childlhood, methods f wking with professionals in the field as well as the families of children with special needs. CHDV 115 Child, Family, Community (3) The study of the child in relation to the family, school, community; family relationships; facts affecting parental attitudes; values of individuals families. Focus on understing the holistic approach to child development, including they practice. CHDV 120 Children s Health, Safety, Nutrition (3) Physical, psychosocial, mental health including preventative treatment measures. Emphasis is placed on development of understing practices of preventative health systems including sanitary food hling, child nutrition, child abuse, emergency preparedness evacuation. Health assessments the changing of health behavis are stressed. Students will create, assess monit safe indo outdo environments f children. Focus is on children birth to age 8. CHDV 121 Pediatric CPR First Aid (.5) ½ hour lecture Note: May be taken 4 times, Pass/No Pass grading only Prepares childcare wkers, parents, other adults wking with children f skills knowledge required f pediatric first aid CPR. CHDV 125 Art in Early Childhood (3) Methods processes f developing creativity through art f young children. Students will plan, implement, evaluate developmentally appropriate art creative experiences f young children apply theetical concepts in a variety of ways. Materials used in art will be expled. An emphasis will be placed on the developmental experiential approaches techniques. CHDV 130 Math Science in Early Childhood (3) Students will examine math science concepts f young children, infants through eight years. Students will plan, implement, evaluate developmentally appropriate math science experiences f young children apply theetical concepts using various methods. An emphasis is placed on developmental experiential methods. CHDV 135 Music Creative Movement in Early Childhood (3) Developing creative experiences through music movement activities. Songs, movement, instrument experiences will be presented. Appropriate lesson plans techniques will be developed. CHDV 140 Children s Literature Language Development (3) Survey of histic contempary children s literature. A critical look at children s books the process of choosing age appropriate books f children, infancy through adolescence. Overview of typical language development literacy development from birth through early childhood, including theetical approaches developmental issues, as well as techniques f appropriately incpating literacy into the classroom. CHDV 142 Using Sign in the Early Childhood Setting (.5) ½ hour lecture Exples the benefits research behind signing with infants, toddlers, preschoolers. Research behind the risks associated with television computer use popular culture saturation f young children. Techniques f addressing media consumption with children, parents families. CHDV 145 Children: Victims of Violence (3) Prepares the student to identify, rept, wk with families who interact violently children impacted by violence. Includes the histical background legal aspects of child abuse, as well as practical application, identification assessment, community services agencies. CHDV 150 Advanced Administration f Early Childhood Directs (3) Recommended preparation: CHDV 100, 110, 115, 120, 145, 185 Application of basic management principles in Child Development programs including state regulations, funding, budget preparation, policy writing. Ethical concerns professional development will be addressed. Self study assessment methods f quality environments will be expled. Application of the concepts will be emphasized. CHDV 155 Advanced Supervision f Early Childhood Directs (3) Recommended preparation: CHDV 100, 110, 115, 120, 145, 185 The student will exple the tools that generate productive staff management identify supervisy techniques such as staff motivation, staff benefits, team building, leadership skills, situation leadership. This course partially fulfills the requirement f administration f the Site Supervis Program Direct Child Development Permits isssued by the State of Califnia Commission on Teacher Credentialing, also meets Title 22 licensing regulations f directs. CHDV 172 Teaching in a Diverse Society (3) A survey of both the Anti-Bias Peaceable Classroom curricula with a focus on developing the ability of teachers to create early childhood settings that encourage an appreciation, understing respect of similarities differences of cultures. Social emotional learning conflict resolution is expled as a part of this process. This course will help students exple address diversity issues analyze the many contexts variables related to an individual s socialization process that impact wk with children families. The course overviews the steps needed to become effective advocates on behalf of children families. CHDV 180 Understing Wking with the School-Age Child (3) Designed to prepare students to wk with children ages five through 12 years, by focusing on the development of the children in this age group. Students will study developmental theies the practical implications of these theies when wking with the school-aged child. Licensing regulations f Title 5 22 programs will be expled. CHDV 185 Curriculum in Early Childhood Education (3) Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHDV 105 Recommended preparation: A minimum of 12 Child Development units This course provides a foundation in curriculum planning development. It emphasizes developmentally appropriate environments, activities, guidance, schedules routines, daily, weekly, extended lesson plans. A wide range of theetical curricular approaches will be expled.
