ABOUT THE LOVETT SCHOOL Situated on a gorgeous 100-acre campus in the Buckhead area of Atlanta next to the Chattahoochee River, The Lovett School offers a rich and progressive college-preparatory education rooted in learning, character, and community. The school serves 1,666 students in grades K-12 from 11 counties in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. Students at Lovett are inspired to challenge themselves in all aspects of school life: in the classroom, on the stage and in the studio, on the playing field, and in the community. One hundred percent of graduates are admitted to four-year colleges and are characterized by their strength of intellect as well as their force of character. Rooted in the beliefs of its founder, Mrs. Eva Edwards Lovett, the school seeks to develop the whole child and offers coursework and programs that challenge students academically, aesthetically, athletically, and emotionally. Bolstered by an exceptionally strong faculty with, on average, 17 years of teaching experience and who are actively engaged in their own professional development, Lovett is a premier national college preparatory school. The school has graduated more than 6,000 alumni who consistently note that Lovett s liberal arts curriculum has prepared them well for their many endeavors, including Olympic competition, space exploration, and business entrepreneurship. The Lovett School is committed to improving communities in Atlanta and across the world. In 1996 it created Breakthrough Atlanta, a tuition-free academic enrichment program that now serves over 250 underserved students across Atlanta with Saturday and summer programming. In 1992 Lovett purchased 825 acres of cloud forest in Ecuador. Siempre Verde offers U.S. and

2 Ecuadorian students an opportunity to learn conservation methods through research and the exchange of ideas. The Lovett School operates a $50 million budget and its endowment is currently valued at $65 million. In the last fiscal year Lovett raised $12.5 million in total private support and awarded $3 million in financial aid. In 2015, Lovett completed its Our Defining Decade capital campaign in which it raised $94 million for capital improvements and additional endowments. The school has recently completed the strategic planning process for the next five years with a focus on cultivating excellence, promoting stewardship and sustainability in all forms, sharing the school s story, and creating a cohesive community. LOVETT STUDENTS, ACADEMICS AND CO-CURRICULUM Lovett selectively enrolls students from all ethnic, cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds who can benefit from the school s challenging academic program, learning in small class sizes with favorable student-teacher ratios. Approximately 20 percent of Lovett's students are students of color. The Lovett Lower School aims to develop the servant leaders of tomorrow who are prepared to engage and change the world. The learning environment focuses on nurturing the minds and hearts of children so that they are self-aware, empathetic, and curious. In turn, the curriculum cultivates motivated, creative, and confident students who have the content knowledge and skills necessary for Middle School and beyond. Whether in the core academics (reading, writing, math, social studies) or resource classes (fine arts, religion, physical education, and Spanish), children are actively engaged in their learning and constructing new knowledge of self and world. The goal of the Middle School is to balance a rigorous academic curriculum with the needs of the early adolescent. Utilizing interdisciplinary team planning, the design thinking process, and project based learning, the Middle School curriculum provides a solid foundation in core academic disciplines that will develop both critical thinking skills and the ability to learn independently. Instruction focuses on the development of proficiency in mathematics, written and spoken communications, world languages, and laboratory skills in the physical and social sciences. Teachers go beyond the textbook to help students absorb and integrate information as it relates to their lives. For example, humanities classes conduct mock trials, promote their group s Utopian societies, and prototype solutions to world problems. Science classes use biomimicry to solve a local problem, conduct forensics labs, and build and program robots to aid in planetary exploration. Advanced level math, science, French, Latin, Spanish and English classes are also offered. Lovett s Upper School immerses students in a broad liberal arts curriculum with each course contributing to an integrated preparation for college and 21 st -century citizenship and leadership. The Upper School curriculum is designed to foster in students the knowledge and intellectual skills necessary to respond to the complex problems of our world. Students are challenged in their assignments to bring together insights from seemingly disparate disciplines. Each upper school department offers a range of courses, including a wide variety of electives intended to provide students with the opportunity to delve more deeply into a specific topic. Students in grades may also enroll in online classes through Global Online Academy, a consortium Lovett joined in Twenty Advanced Placement courses and 32 honors courses are available 2

3 to students who are ready to challenge themselves with a more rigorous curriculum. Students may pursue a diploma distinction in sustainability, global studies, or service & leadership. Approximately 15 students each year take advantage of this opportunity. Students at Lovett actively engage in all areas of school life. The school s exemplary arts program provides instruction for students in the visual and performing arts, and its many sports teams are perennially successful. More than 90% of students participate in a fine arts activity, and over 80% of students in grades 7 to12 play on at least one interscholastic athletic team. At Lovett, the fine arts are alive and thriving, with 47 professional artists instructing courses in sculpture, photography, film, painting, drawing, theater arts, technical theater, chorus, orchestra, band, jazz ensemble, dance, and more. Instruction is offered for 14 instruments as well as voice, and students have the opportunity to perform in recitals, plays, musical productions, concerts, chapel services, and school events. Lovett s athletic program allows students to develop skills and compete in a wide range of sports, including cross country, softball, football, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, swimming, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, golf, soccer, track, and gymnastics. Its athletic facilities are superb and enviable. In addition, students at Lovett are committed to making positive contributions to society, for the betterment of the community, the environment, and the world. Students seek out service and sustainability activities that expose them to greater issues outside the school community and allow them to be active participants in discussions and solutions. PHYSICAL CAMPUS Located in a residential neighborhood of northwest Atlanta s appealing Buckhead area, Lovett is surrounded by lovely homes, canopies of old-growth hardwood trees, and some of the best restaurants, hotels, and shopping in the city. The Lovett campus combines wooded natural beauty with well-designed, environmentally friendly structures. The 123,000-square foot, threestory Upper School opened in 2002 and features state-of-the-art classrooms, science labs, a greenhouse, and an independent research center. This building also houses the new Loudermilk Student Activities Center, home to the Glover Gymnasium, campus store, a student lounge, and the Lion s Den Cafe, a popular gathering place for the secondary students. In 2003, the school completed construction on a new Lower School, which includes its own library and gymnasium and is divided into three wings: early childhood, primary, and elementary. In 2009, the new Portman Family Middle School opened and earned a LEED-gold certification. 3

4 Part of the Fuqua Center, the 650-seat Hendrix-Chenault Theater offers one of the Southeast s most impressive performance venues. The Center also includes state-of-the-art music and art rooms, a photography lab, exhibition gallery, recording studio, and Black Box theater. Lovett s athletic facilities rank among the best in the Southeast and include five grass and turf athletic fields, a stadium, a six-lane all-weather track, three gymnasiums, an indoor track, indoor pool, extensive weight room, a wellness center, training room, an exceptional baseball/softball complex with two regulation fields, and batting cages. Railey Field is an artificial, allweather, multipurpose turf playing field offering athletes valuable playing experience on an artificial surface. The new LEED Gold-certified, 40,000 square-feet Murray Athletic Center was completed in July 2015, providing Lovett additional athletic and meeting spaces. Students can also take advantage of Lovett s aerobics room, 10 tennis courts, and wooded trails. THE POSITION The provides consultation to the Headmaster and works with the leadership team to identify and support the achievement of The Lovett School s objectives for visibility, enrollment, and institutional growth. A newly created position, this role is responsible for developing and implementing the overall strategies that support and lead Lovett s advancement programs. She or he is expected to become a known and trusted leader to faculty, staff, parents, supporters, and students of The Lovett School. The new Assistant Head will create greater opportunities for collaboration and unity within the community and is a peer to the Assistant Headmaster, Principals of the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, Director of Fine Arts, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Admissions, Director of Financial Aid and Institutional Research, Director of Strategic Innovation, and Director of Plant Operations. The Assistant Head leads a team of twenty directors, managers and individuals and is responsible for managing a departmental budget of $2.5 million. S/he is responsible for a team of 20 that includes the school s marketing, branding and communications, fundraising, alumni relations, multicultural affairs, community relations and Breakthrough Atlanta. RESPONSIBILITIES The has the following primary responsibilities: Articulate the chief components of Lovett s strategic plan and vision for learning into key marketing messages and strategies that resonate with prospective students and parents, faculty and staff, and current and prospective Lovett supporters. 4

5 Oversee, in partnership with the head of strategic communications, the construction and implementation of the new branding plan, including strategies to bolster Lovett s K-6 enrollment. Fine-tune the plan for advancement, including specific goals for strengthening the school s endowment for financial aid, the Breakthrough Atlanta Program, Siempre Vierde, the Academic Resource Center, Lab Atlanta, as well as on-going faculty support. Lead the effort to implement a structured, formalized approach to relationship management and portfolio development for Lovett staff. Working with the Chief Development Officer, help to define donor portfolios for the development team In collaboration with the Board of Trustees and the Headmaster, lead the collaboration and development of the school s next campaign. In collaboration with Breakthrough Atlanta, Multicultural Affairs, and Community Relations, continue to create awareness and energy in the Lovett community that focuses on inclusion through community involvement. Build on the success of the $2.4 million True Blue Annual Fund and the school s 300 plus member legacy giving program. QUALIFICATIONS The Lovett community is interested in all candidates who possess the proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to further expand its commitment to academic excellence within a child-centered community. The most promising candidates will be leaders who understand the interdependence of all aspects of a large independent school. The school is most interested in candidates who possess or are able to demonstrate most, if not all, of the following: A strong passion and commitment to The Lovett School s mission and values. Record of accomplishment in managing and developing teams and elevating institutional visibility for educational institutions including universities and colleges, independent schools or education related organizations. Experience in education with significant experience in marketing and advancement functions. Demonstrated success creating and implementing a strategic marketing plan. 5

6 Superb social skills with the desire and ability to forge productive relationships within the philanthropic community and a track record of securing philanthropic gifts up to six-or sevenfigures. Intentional about continuing to create and support a diverse community; a record of involvement and leadership with educational access initiatives is highly preferred. Proven success in working closely with a committed and engaged Board of Trustees and volunteers. Broad experience and skills in fiscal management, fundraising analysis, and planning. Outstanding communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and planning abilities. Ability to manage, mentor, and work collaboratively across disciplines and at all levels. Visible, accessible, inclusive, and fair-minded. Strong work ethic, servant leadership and an influential and diplomatic work style. Knowledge of the Lovett and Atlanta community would be an advantage. Ability to travel on behalf of The Lovett School. A bachelor s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
