College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSIT Y, EAST BAY We are the future of the East Bay. As a leader in sustaining the region s economic and cultural vibrancy, the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences at California State University, East Bay distinguishes itself by engaging students of all backgrounds in a rigorous, interdisciplinary liberal arts or professional education that balances strong academics with the acquisition of critical skills. Graduates of the College enter the workforce fully prepared for further academic or professional pursuits in areas such as business, social services, education, law, government, the arts, and many other professions. The result is well-rounded and informed citizens who are poised to become original thinkers and natural leaders, prepared to engage and thrive in an increasingly complex multicultural society.
Access to Inspiration, Excellence, and Opportunity Cal State East Bay s College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences extends well beyond the academic rigor of the classroom with a liberal arts education enriched by multicultural content, service learning, and a global-issues perspective. Timely and topical, community-based research often involving student participation is a hallmark of the college. It ranges from solar energy research, resulting in the on-campus installation of the nation s largest university solar electric system, to evaluating California voter mobilization activities, focusing on increasing turnout among ethnic voters. The College offers a studentcentric learning experience featuring a challenging liberal arts curriculum. Students develop the excellent critical thinking, writing, and communication skills required of today s managers, organizers, educators, and leaders. As the largest college at the University, it ranges the breadth and depth of 18 diverse academic departments and four interdisciplinary programs based in those majors. They span traditional liberal arts disciplines from English, history, modern languages, music, and philosophy to the interdisciplinary fields of ethnic, international, Latin American, women s studies, and Filipino studies, to professional degree programs that include communicative sciences and disorders, public affairs and administration, and social work. As a hallmark of an increasingly multicultural society and a global economy, the College has established the first endowed chair at CSUEB the Dr. Ranjit Singh Sabharwal Chair in Sikh and Punjabi Studies. The first of what will be a series of interdisciplinary endowed chairs, these professors will offer students opportunities to earn their global citizenship by exploring and engaging in the study of other languages, cultures, politics, and religions, in a uniquely holistic manner. The College s faculty members recognized and respected by both the academic and professional communities for their expertise and accomplishments are committed educators who value student interaction. They inspire, mentor, and impart knowledge in a highly personalized learning environment that combines quality classroom instruction with applied research and practical experience.
Regional Impact. Regional Possibilities. The commitment of the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences to academic excellence and opportunity produces far-reaching regional benefits. The result is a highly qualified, committed, and productive workforce that fortifies the foundation of the local culture and economy. Our graduates interests and expertise are so diverse as to be found in practically every profession. Graduates of all disciplines from the college are involved in creating, building, and leading local as well as major national companies; a master s of science program in communicative sciences and disorders provides speech therapy for children and adults in the Bay Area; music graduates perform in Bay Area orchestras and choral groups; master of social work graduates take on the critical social service issues faced by children, youth and families. Supporting the College is a direct investment in the region s economic and social vitality. Each year Cal State East Bay provides access to an awardwinning college experience and education for more than 13,000 students including more than 4,000 in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Of these, more than 1,200 graduate annually from the College, fully prepared for productive careers and engaged citizenship. Of the University s more than 90,000 graduates, roughly 85 percent live and work in the region. In addition to their contributions as skilled and knowledgeable workers, managers, entrepreneurs, and business leaders, Cal State East Bay alumni contribute mightily to the regional economy with more than $1 billion of annual income attributable to their CSUEB degrees. Thus, the effects of an investment in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences ripple across Alameda and Contra Costa counties, affecting the lives and future of the region s 33 communities and 2.5 million residents, and the entire Bay Area s 7.2 million people.
Invest in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Invest in the Minds, Hearts & Hands of Tomorrow. Students attend the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences at Cal State East Bay for a liberal arts education that is uniquely personal, professional, and achievable. They know that the College offers them a portal to knowledge, skills, and insights across a wide range of subjects and a rewarding and revelatory journey to personal growth and professional qualification. As graduates they are skilled at solving complex problems, well-prepared to work cooperatively and collaboratively, and carefully attuned to the needs of a changing society. Professors teach in the college because they believe in its commitment to balancing a comprehensive education in the humanities, arts, and social sciences with professional pursuits. This fosters an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research, and engages students in active learning. Student fees cover only one-third of the true cost of this remarkable education. While state funds cover much of the rest, private support enables the college to fund programs that go beyond the classroom such as international faculty and student exchanges that deepen cross-cultural understanding. Support of liberal arts education means funding the next generation of thinkers, writers, artists, educators, and leaders. We count on those who share our vision to provide this critical margin of excellence. This private support strengthens the college s ability to: recruit and retain an outstanding faculty committed to the highest level of studentcentric teaching and research; improve academic programs, research, and instructional technology; ensure student participation in research and national conferences; offer supplemental support, resources, and services to ensure student success; expand outreach programs and access for students of all backgrounds; and meet critical, changing regional workforce and human capital needs. Supporting the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences is an investment in the minds, hearts, and hands of tomorrow s workforce and citizenry. MINDS: Creative thinker and effective problem-solver, seeking and discovering new solutions to changing societal needs HEARTS: Committed citizen with values-based work ethic and earnest commitment to work for solutions to local, regional, and global challenges HANDS: Skilled communicator, collaborator, and leader, uniquely well prepared for further academic or professional pursuits in business, education, the professions, government, and the arts Cal State East Bay s College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, with the support of generous and committed friends, educates and integrates the minds, hearts, and hands of today s students and tomorrow s workforce and citizenry.
The College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences at Cal State East Bay Distinguished Liberal Arts. Distinguishing Academics. The largest of the University s colleges, CLASS enrolls 40 percent of the University s students. All CSUEB students, no matter their major, take courses in CLASS to meet degree requirements. Through an exclusive agreement with the Sorbonne in Paris, English Department faculty members from CSUEB teach in the Sorbonne s multi-disciplinary English Department. Cal State East Bay s Department of Human Development offers a fully online degree program that earns participating students a Bachelor of Arts degree in human development with an option in adult development and gerontology, or a BA degree in women s development. Numerous graduates of Cal State East Bay s Criminal Justice Department serve as chiefs of police for Northern California cities, while many others are employed by local, state, federal, and private law enforcement agencies. CSUEB s History Department is unique among Bay Area universities for teaching historical writing and historiography through a four-course seminar sequence. The Department of Social Work at CSUEB is a valued collaborator with the Alameda County Department of Social Services to improve the delivery of home and social service care to adolescents aging out of the foster care system of the county. Students of CSUEB s Department of Theatre and Dance perform every year on the foreign stage in such places as Slovakia, Ireland, the Czech Republic, and Scotland. WAYS TO SUPPORT THE COLLEGE OF LETTERS, ARTS, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Gifts to the college are not only the most important and most rewarding gifts you may ever make, they are also tax-deductible. Support the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, and invest in its work by specifying what department or program you wish your contribution to support. Or you can give without restriction, allowing the dean, a department chair, or program director to use your gift where it is most valuable. Gifts may be made by check, credit card, and online, either in full or in installments, based on a signed pledge. Gifts of property and securities as well as planned gifts that are part of an estate plan are also welcome.
