We are home to a unique and diverse array of academic programs including teacher education, kinesiology, athletic training, art, dance, and rehabilitation psychology. The School of Education s professional programs offer a Big Ten campus experience with small-school class size and personal attention. 4 3 School of Education Rehabilitation Psychology rpse.education.wisc.edu The Rehabilitation Psychology program prepares its students to promote and support the independence and full societal inclusion of people with disabilities in employment and the community. Rehabilitation Psychology majors work with individuals with physical, mental, cognitive, emotional, and developmental disabilities. Graduates support clients around job placement, workplace performance, and independent living at home and in the community. Most students go on to graduate work in rehabilitation counseling, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or other related fields. In their first two years of study, Rehabilitation Psychology majors complete core course work in psychology, educational psychology, sociology, and social work, along with classes in the liberal arts. Juniors and seniors take specialized course work, becoming familiar with issues of disability advocacy and the agencies, programs, and program models that serve persons with disabilities. All students participate in intensive, applied community-based experiences working with persons with disabilities.

5 School of Education 4 photo courtesy University Communications Kinesiology kinesiology.education.wisc.edu Undergraduate students in the Department of Kinesiology focus on the scientific study of exercise and movement, and also on the application of this study to health, physical education, functional performance, and athletic training. These programs attract students interested in the health professions (e.g., athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, medicine), and teaching physical education. Graduate work in Kinesiology may include the study of exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and control, and motor development. The department offers three options leading to the Bachelor of Science degree: 1) Exercise and Movement Science, preparing students for graduate or professional study; 2) Athletic Training, preparing students for the national board exam and eventual practice as professional athletic trainers; 3) Physical Education, preparing teachers for elementary, middle, and high schools. All three options emphasize basic sciences, core Kinesiology courses, specialized classes in the specific major option, and course work in the liberal arts.

Our graduates are prepared to create high-quality, culturally responsive educational environments and to provide effective instruction to every child. The School s teacher education programs emphasize academic rigor, a strong conceptual foundation, multicultural and global competence, and extensive experiences in schools and communities. School administrators value our students high-quality professional preparation. During the first two years on campus, students take course work that reflects their academic interests while gaining a broad background in the liberal arts. Students usually apply to their professional programs of interest during their sophomore year.

8 7 School of Education Dance dance.wisc.edu Dance majors at UW Madison have a unique opportunity to study with a world-class faculty, in state-of-the-art facilities, at one of the top public universities in the country. Those selected enter into a comprehensive, rigorous investigation of contemporary dance, enhanced by somatic practices, ballet, and cultural dance. Graduates become well-prepared dance artists/educators who have gone on to dance professionally, pursue graduate training, teach, and pursue careers in arts administration, health care, business, and more. The department offers an interdisciplinary approach to dance studies, excellent teacher-student ratios, numerous performance opportunities, and the chance to work with renowned guest artists. Scholarships are awarded to students demonstrating exceptional promise, often including funding to travel and study nationally and internationally. We offer Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Dance. The BS provides theoretical and practical study of dance while allowing students to integrate other disciplinary coursework. The BFA is a rigorous dance program emphasizing performance, choreography, technical, and artistic training.

Options include graphic design, drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and photography, as well as specialty areas such as digital media, wood/furniture making, community art, performance art, and neon sculpture. This NASADaccredited department pioneered glass-working as an art form. Nationally we are ranked #2 in printmaking and #3 in art metals/ jewelry. Students scholarly and artistic interests are nurtured in small studio courses. New art majors develop peer and instructor support networks early on by participating in the Art Foundations program, a number of related studio and lecture courses required of first-year majors Art majors choose from three programs: 1) Bachelor of Fine Arts, especially designed for those interested in working professionally in fine arts or in a commercial design field; 2) Bachelor of Science in Art, allowing students the flexibility to add a certificate or second academic major; and 3) Bachelor of Science in Art Education, preparing teachers to work in K-12 settings.

Certificates are taken in addition to a major. Examples include Introductory Studies in Dance Movement/Therapy; Education and Educational Services; and Educational Policy Studies.

Undergraduate Advising in the School of Education Education Academic Services (EAS) is the undergraduate student affairs office for the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. EAS advisors work with current and prospective School of Education students in all programs, helping them to develop and attain their educational goals. Much of the advising time is spent assisting students with their course selection and program admission. But advisors also help students explore their academic interests and strengths, examine the issues of multiculturalism and difference, find learning and support resources, and consider academic and career alternatives. The Office of Undergraduate Recruitment and Retention (OURR) is a focal point for the personal and professional development of underrepresented students in the School of Education. The mission of the office is to connect students of color, low-income, and/or first-generation college students to information, faculty, staff, and each other, so that they may graduate from the School and fulfill vital roles in their communities. OURR staff work toward this goal by building and supporting a network of students and graduates that strengthen, transform and lead their communities through education, service, and other contributions.
