02 Our Global Vision
Our Global Vision 03 INSEAD is special It is an independent and entrepreneurial business school with unmatched global outreach and unparalleled diversity of students, executive participants and alumni. These are exceptional qualities that generate many exciting opportunities but they also create challenges to address as we continue to excel as a top-tier business school. This brochure is directed to you, our alumni and our supporters. Here we lay out the building blocks of our world-class vision for INSEAD and the Dean s Annual Fund. This joint project with the INSEAD Alumni Fund aims to build stronger support within the INSEAD community to achieve a new level of academic excellence. As you will read in the brochure, my key priority is to preserve and grow the quality of our school. I will uphold the values of the founders, nurture INSEAD s vibrant intellectual environment, ensure innovation in our teaching to attract high quality students from around the globe, and increase the reputation of INSEAD through engaging the extraordinary network of INSEAD alumni. Throughout the document, I share my strong belief that business is a force for good. There is no sustainable mechanism for uplifting people from poverty other than economic growth. There is no engine for longterm growth other than business creation and innovation. We are fortunate that our predecessors foresaw the rise of globalization and established a school destined to be a pioneer in the internationalization of business and education. This is our enduring vision, one that lets us state confidently that INSEAD s era is now. We are the vanguard of an exciting future. We have the opportunity to develop responsible, thoughtful global leaders who will transform companies, communities, and nations throughout the world. To do this, I invite you to invest in INSEAD. Invest in knowledge creation, in teaching excellence, in learning innovation. Invest to build a peaceful and prosperous world. To our donors who have given generously, thank you for your continued support for INSEAD. Now I ask you and all other alumni to join us in investing in our vision. Thank you. Ilian Mihov Dean, INSEAD
04 Our Global Vision INSEAD s enduring vision From a pioneering vision to a future that is unique among business schools The original vision of our founder Georges Doriot brings management education and internationalism together to promote peace and prosperity and serve the growing demand for global managers. INSEAD s founding values are original and unchanged: the school is independent, international, free from any dominating culture, and close to business. The core mission developing business leaders who can enhance prosperity and peace around the world resonates powerfully today. INSEAD s entrepreneurial pioneers established legitimacy within the academic community without the benefit of the credibility and resources of an established university affiliation. They overcame many obstacles lack of resources, facilities and teaching faculty to lay the groundwork boldly for the INSEAD of today. Do you remember your time at INSEAD? Do you remember the apprehension of the first days, the stimulating exchanges in the classroom, the intensity of the debates during teamwork, the fun of all of our parties? Have you since experienced the connections with classmates, felt the benefits of being a true global thinker? Savour and share your memories about INSEAD - this is our time. Gérard Despinoy, MBA 95J, IAF Trustee Managing Director, Stradéfi Conseils From the outset, INSEAD has been committed to delivering sound business practices that help build prosperity in Europe and around the world. That vision has never wavered. In fact, it is stronger than ever. We need to support our school to sustain that vision. Franz B. Humer, MBA 71 Chairman of the Board of Directors, INSEAD
Our Global Vision 05 Educating global leaders INSEAD s original mandate to develop the strongest global business leaders continues to be met today as the school embraces its unique culture as The Business School for the World. INSEAD s resources in teaching, research and outreach support the philosophy that business is a force for good. Business creates growth, lifts people from poverty and strengthens communities. INSEAD attracts and develops talented global leaders who contribute to the livelihood and growth in their own countries and communities and around the world. Their international exposure and INSEAD experience provide a competitive advantage as they become leaders in today s borderless world. From simple beginnings, INSEAD has become the leading global business school with three campuses linking Europe, Asia and the Middle East and an alumni community representing more than 150 nationalities. INSEAD s multi-campus, multicultural environment provides a unique learning experience that enables its graduates to manage complexity and create value wherever they do business in the world. At the core of the INSEAD experience is a vibrant intellectual environment. Today there are 146 resident faculty from 34 countries, with PhDs from leading universities. Their research has earned INSEAD recognition as the best school for business research outside of the U.S. (The University of Texas, Dallas, Top 100 Worldwide Business School Research Rankings ). Further, with extensive Executive Education programmes across continents and regions, INSEAD faculty constantly gain first-hand understanding of the realities and challenges facing global business. As a result, INSEAD develops leaders who can manage cross-cultural, international teams and organizations. Our outstanding faculty understand how to convey complex knowledge to students who come from every part of the world. INSEAD enjoys the unique ability to bridge developed and developing areas of the world. INSEAD s independence offers great competitive advantages, including the ability to be agile and entrepreneurial, qualities that make us the ideal partner for many organizations. We connect with universities, foundations, research institutes and governments because of our world-class thought leadership and the freedom of action that our independence delivers. Ultimately, students know that their aspirations to make a difference will be nourished at INSEAD. This is affirmed by the remarkable fact that approximately 50% of INSEAD MBA applicants apply only to INSEAD. INSEAD gave me the skills and confidence to develop Lhoist into a global company. Jean-Pierre Berghmans, MBA 74 Chairman of the Lhoist Group INSEAD provided me with an enhanced understanding of world issues, of what leadership was all about and the ability to be more adaptive and flexible, how to deal with real business problems and how to solve them. Patrick Cescau, MBA 76 Chairman of InterContinental Hotels Group Former Group CEO of Unilever
06 Our Global Vision Financing a global school Developing leaders to manage the businesses of tomorrow requires vision and a strong foundation on which to build the future. The speed with which the business world changes requires that INSEAD remains close to business, entrepreneurial and committed to maintaining the highest quality in teaching and research. INSEAD s independence As a private, non-profit school, INSEAD stands alone, unaffiliated with any university. This means operating costs are met by revenues, mainly programme fees. For initiatives and enhancements to advance INSEAD s excellence, we depend on annual giving and endowment yields. These are essential in maintaining and growing the standards of quality that define INSEAD as the leading international business school. These crucial resources are needed to allow us to attract the best students, hire top academics, offer the most innovative curriculum and business models, and expand our global influence and brand. These are goals for the school that we all share, and they are within reach, but they require financial commitments. This is where you can make a difference. Every time you invest in INSEAD you help build the school s excellence and its competitive strength. Annual giving is an effective way to contribute to INSEAD in an ongoing and manageable manner. Annual giving allows the school to look beyond the immediate to be able to identify, plan and act on future needs. Annual giving helps strengthen INSEAD s independence, an advantage that over the years has allowed the school to act freely and flexibly as market demands on business education have evolved. It was through sheer luck and good fortune that I came to INSEAD and I loved every minute of it. The INSEAD spirit truly embraces the world and brings the sense of caring that is necessary in the business world today. Giving to INSEAD will enable the school to continually thrive and grow and enrich the lives of future generations as it has enriched mine. Paul Desmarais Jr., MBA 79 Chairman & Co-Chief Executive Officer, Power Corporation of Canada Our school was ahead of its time 50 years ago. Giving back ensures it stays ahead. Caroline van Scheltinga, MBA 88J Chairman and CEO, Waterloo Investment Holdings Limited When I give to INSEAD, it is always with the intention of buttressing the endowment. It is a unique institution, not only in terms of management education and its role in creating global citizens, but also in terms of its asset base INSEAD is not part of a large university complex, but stands alone on its pure focus on business education. Thomas F. Cahill Jr., MBA 90J Managing Director, Morgan Stanley Giving has a huge multiplier effect. The direct beneficiary is an individual, but the ripples are felt by all who come into contact with him or her. Deepak Gupta, MBA 93J Founder and Chairman of The Denita Group of Companies

08 Our Global Vision Our INSEAD Global Network As an INSEAD alumnus you are part of a unique global network spanning nations and generations. Thanks to our diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, we share a rich learning experience. The mission of the INSEAD Alumni Association is to extend this to the experience of a lifetime an ongoing source of friendships, of intellectual enrichment and, yes, of support for our wonderful school. Remember, wherever you go in the world you will always find an INSEAD friend! Sven Kado, MBA 72 President of the INSEAD Alumni Association
Our Global Vision 09 Alumni Associations and National Councils across the world INSEAD Campuses: Fontainebleau Singapore Abu Dhabi National Alumni Associations (NAA) National Councils (NC) Countries where NAAs & NCs can be found Alliances and Partnerships I ve done business in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Afghanistan, where it takes a generation to figure out how things work, but there has always been an INSEAD contact to speed things up. I don t think there is a single step I ve taken without the benefit of input from a fellow INSEADer. Loudon Owen, MBA 88J Managing Partner and Co-founder, McLean Watson Capital INSEAD alumni lead businesses in more than countries % of INSEAD alumni in Board Member and C-level positions.
10 Our Global Vision How we connect with each other It is a simple reality that INSEAD graduates will find fellow alumni wherever they go in the world. That is at the heart of how your school can help you, by enabling and promoting your incredible, dynamic network. The INSEAD alumni network is robust, diverse and globally connected to an extent few institutions can boast. The school and its volunteers are dedicated to ensuring alumni stay connected to their INSEAD family throughout their careers and lifetimes. Your network is a benefit of unmatched potential and we want to assist alumni to leverage its many rich advantages. There are many opportunities to reap the rewards of your alumni network. These are just a few examples. Across the globe The INSEAD Alumni Association (IAA) provides global leadership for nurturing and forging alumni connections, while the INSEAD Alumni Fund (IAF) anchors the school s fundraising initiatives with alumni. National Alumni Associations (NAA), now 46 in number, join with six industry clubs to offer networking events, career and mentoring services and social connections. In the school INSEAD s Alumni Relations Office offers full support to alumni, helping you build connections with your school. The office maintains a full alumni directory, facilitating connections with faculty, students and alumni around the world for all degree and Executive Education class members. Re-living INSEAD memories With class volunteers, we design and offer reunions that create memorable opportunities to network and re-connect with your classmates.
Our Global Vision 11 Never-ending learning opportunities Global INSEAD Day and three regional forum events, in conjunction with the IAA, IAF and NAAs, provide extraordinary opportunities to learn, network and socialize with INSEAD alumni and supporters. INSEAD s Executive Education programmes deliver lifelong learning to alumni. The INSEAD LiVE series allows alumni to extend the online class experience with added learning opportunities through INSEAD Knowledge and the INSEAD Library Services. All these opportunities let alumni stay connected to the latest management thinking. Staying connected INSEAD continues to develop its communications to ensure alumni can stay connected smoothly. For example, alumni have an address for life and access to a communications vehicle called the INSEAD Global Network provided through Yammer insead.edu. Our new Alumni Magazine will highlight interesting alumni and professors and keep you up to date with new initiatives and accomplishments at the school. Career networking Our network of alumni volunteers link with students as sector advisors and explore intern opportunities for students. A network-wide coaching programme links industry experts via the school. Several National Alumni Associations offer career service programmes and the school offers high quality jobs boards. And our close relationship with LinkedIn offers exciting potential for job search and career development programmes. With such a powerful network, ideas are endless. Please contact craig.mckenna@insead.edu to share your suggestions on how we can expand the alumni experience. By giving Alumni are essential to the long-term health of INSEAD by bringing experience, volunteer support and connections in building INSEAD s global reputation. In particular, committed financial support is crucial in securing INSEAD s world-class status, building upon its boundless strengths and maintaining our enduring vision into the future. When you give to INSEAD, you are investing in the school, in other alumni and in yourself. And getting involved! Enhance the high quality of MBA participants by volunteering in such areas as referrals, master classes, interviewing and selection committees Share your experiences and expertise in the classroom, helping with different student initiatives (student clubs), career development and through profiles and articles used in our communications vehicles Assume an Alumni-in-residence posting with strategic areas of focus Engage at different levels of the INSEAD network, for example in global outreach in organizations such as the INSEAD Alumni Association and INSEAD Alumni Fund For information on any of these programmes, please contact craig.mckenna@insead.edu
12 Our Global Vision Our World-Class Vision for INSEAD From the Chairman of the INSEAD Alumni Fund: In order to assert and advance INSEAD s independence, global vision and international reputation, it is essential to build quality in every part of the school s activities. By giving to the school you are investing in our alumni, you are investing in the future. When you enhance the value of the school, you are strengthening the value of your own credentials, creating value for yourself. When we help our school maintain its world-class position, we all benefit. By giving INSEAD the means to invest for the future, you help position your school at the cutting edge of management education. Everybody wins. The INSEAD Alumni Fund encourages you to invest in the Dean s Vision for INSEAD. Leonidas Los, MBA 75 There are four clear areas where business schools need investments to compete. These are critical inputs to a world-class intellectual environment. Your targeted investments in these four areas will help INSEAD remain one of the best business schools in the world and strive continually for higher levels of quality. 1Diverse and talented students Competition for quality candidates in degree programmes has extended into the financial aid arena, with schools using scholarships to entice the best participants. A robust scholarship programme will let INSEAD increase offers to top candidates and help generate more high quality applications. Attracting quality applications is vital for the school, as is preserving diversity, and there are no greater ambassadors for INSEAD than satisfied, high quality alumni. 2 World-class faculty in a vibrant intellectual environment World-class faculty recognized for their research and effectiveness in the classroom are crucial to INSEAD s reputation for providing a top quality international business education. Now, competition for leading faculty is an international affair and significant financial resources are essential for INSEAD to assert its global leadership. We will be relentless in our pursuit of teaching and research excellence to ensure a thoroughly rewarding experience for our students and competitiveness in our programmes. 3 State-of-the-art facilities INSEAD s committed pursuit of academic excellence must be supported by world-class facilities. This is made abundantly clear by the exceptional success of our state-of-the-art campus in Singapore, and our expansion there will add to our impact in Asia. Similar benefits are expected from major renovation works planned for the Europe campus in Fontainebleau. These important projects will allow us to meet the highest quality standards for tomorrow s students and faculty. And it s not just bricks and mortar. We intend to continue to develop our digital environment so that our communications and learning opportunities will be unparalleled. 4 Endowment secures the future Quite simply, a strong and growing endowment is a clear commitment to INSEAD s future. A robust endowment tells students, alumni, faculty and the entire INSEAD community that the school will maintain and grow its status as the leading international business school. It reflects INSEAD s commitment to seek ways that continue to build the quality of its programmes.
Our Global Vision 13 The Dean s Annual Fund My key priority is to preserve and grow the quality of our school. Ilian Mihov Dean, INSEAD The INSEAD Alumni Fund invites investments to the Dean s Annual Fund to uphold the values of the founders, nurture INSEAD s vibrant intellectual environment, ensure innovation in teaching and increase the reputation of our school. By giving to the Dean s Annual Fund, you provide the Dean with the ability to realize our vision and make investments in vital areas such as brand, career development and the alumni network. You also provide the discretion and flexibility to respond to urgent needs and seize unique opportunities. Building the global brand: International, independent, entrepreneurial these are the themes that shape INSEAD s brand. Your investment will help us elevate the quality of our work, extending the reach of the INSEAD brand. With our unmatched international network, the brand will say boldly that ours is a global education of the highest quality. Our entire community reaps the rewards as the INSEAD brand and quality are intertwined. Career development: An innovative, creative Career Development Centre helps our graduates secure leadership positions in influential organizations and build careers, and the impact of the INSEAD community worldwide grows stronger. As the impact of our alumni expands across the international business community and INSEAD claims a leadership position in the international job marketplace, the richness of the INSEAD alumni network will be enhanced. The Global INSEAD Network: INSEAD is uniquely positioned to change the rules of the game in international business, in large part by leveraging its genuinely global alumni network that touches more than 170 countries around the world. Led by a visionary and influential alumni network and our belief that business is a force for good, we can move the world in a positive direction. Giving is a small way I feel I can contribute to expanding the population of our alumni who will make a difference. Karen Fawcett, MBA 88D Group Head of Transaction Banking, Standard Chartered Bank
