1 Private Instructor - Flute A native of Ashland, OR, Joanna Martin began her musical training on the violin at age seven, and has been studying flute since she was ten. She earned her BM at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with Dr. Jonathan Keeble, and went on to earn her MM and DMA in 2011 from the University of Texas at Austin with Marianne Gedigian. Ms. Martin has performed at the Aspen Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival and the FAVA Festival Orchestra in France. In 2012, she won second prize in the 2012 Myrna Brown Flute Competition. As the winner of the 2010 Byron Hester Flute Competition, she was invited to perform a solo recital at the 2011 Houston Flute Fest. Ms. Martin has given solo recitals and concerto performances throughout the United States and performs as Principal Flute of the Abilene Philharmonic. An advocate of contemporary music, Ms. Martin has premiered many works and has performed at the Electronic Music Midwest Festival, Poto Music Festival in California, Midwest Composers Symposium, Gamma UT, and Electric LaTex Festival. She recently recorded for Red Bud Studios for Terrence Malick s new film To the Wonder, to be released in Ms. Martin has taught at the Birch Creek Music Festival in Wisconsin, Longhorn Music Camp and Illinois Summer Youth Music Festival. She is an active private teacher, freelancer and Masterclass clinician in the Austin community and teaches for Anthropos Arts, an Austin organization that provides music lessons in classical and jazz to underprivileged students in Austin area schools. 2 Private Instructor - Oboe Jennifer Bernard enjoys sharing her passion for music through performing and teaching. In addition to teaching private lessons in Austin, she holds a position as instructor of music at Texas Lutheran University. She currently serves as Principal Oboist for the Victoria Symphony and Laredo Philharmonic, and plays English horn for the Corpus Christi Symphony. She also performs regularly with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Lyric Opera, and Mid-Texas Symphony. Jennifer has been heard on NPR s Performance Today and Classical Guitar Alive, as well as many recordings. One of the most meaningful parts of her musical life is performing outreach concerts with the Classical Guitar Alive Community Outreach Program, whose mission is to present musical performances at no charge to audiences in hospitals, hospices, and more. Beyond classical music, Jennifer has performed at international improvisation conferences with Color of Sound ( or an eclectic musical ensemble that unites diverse musicians to create spontaneous and improvised music. She loves exploring the potential of combining musical improvisation with theatre improv, and she performs regularly with the Austinbased improv comedy troupe Confidence Men, two-time winners of B. 3 Private Instructor - Clarinet BEN STONAKER (b.1981) earned his Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2007, where he studied with James Mobberley, Chen Yi, and Paul Rudy. He earned his Bachelor of Music in composition from Louisiana State University in 2004, where he studied with Stephen David Beck. Stonaker received national recognition for his wind ensemble piece While We Were Yet Sinners at the National Band Association's biennial convention after being selected from a nationwide competition to be part of the NBA's 2002 Young Composer Mentor Project. He has had the opportunity to meet and work with several composers including Joan Tower, Mark Camphouse, David Gillingham, Frank Ticheli, Michael Daugherty, David Dzubay, Donald Grantham, Ian Krouse, and Libby Larsen. In December 2005 Mr. Stonaker served on a distinguished panel and was a charter composer for the cutting edge project and forum, Renewing the Creative Environment at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. His music has been performed throughout the United States, with international performances in Canada, Wales, Scotland, and Puerto Rico. From 2009 to 2012, Mr. Stonaker taught middle school and high school band as a woodwind specialist in south Louisiana, where he was composer-in-residence at Central Lafourche High School. He has been teaching privately (composition, clarinet, and saxophone) since 2006 and several of his students have continued to pursue degrees in music. Currently, Mr. Stonaker is pursuing the DMA in Composition at the University of Texas-Austin, where he is the assistant director of the New Music Ensemble (under the direction of Dan Welcher). 4 Private Instructor - Saxophone Dr. El-Farrah currently teaches saxophone at The University of Texas at San Antonio. He has recorded extensively with The University of Texas Wind Ensemble on Circus Maximus and as a soloist/arranger on two Tex Sax albums entitled Tex Sax Next Generation and Over the Rainbow and Bach Again. He regularly performs with the San Antonio Symphony, the Austin Symphony and the Bel Cuore Quartet. 5 Private Instructor - Bassoon Amanda Turley began her bassoon studies at the age of 12 in Austin, Texas under the instruction of Daris Hale. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in Bassoon Performance from Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with George Sakakeeny. In the summer of 2005 she was a recipient of the Interlochen Maddy Summer Artist Award. Abroad, she has performed with the Oberlin in Italy Opera Orchestra and served as a teaching assistant for a summer orchestra camp hosted by the Asociación Nacional de Conciertos in Panama City, Panama. 6 Private Instructor - Horn Michele Predmore has an expanding teaching studio in the Austin and Dripping Springs area. She received her Bachelor's Degree in French Horn Performance at Arizona State University in 2011 and is currently working towards a Master's Degree at the University of Texas at Austin. She has studied with Jim Thatcher (USC Professor and LA Studio Performer), Dr. John Ericson (ASU Professor), and Patrick Hughes (UT Austin Professor). She has experience playing with a variety of ensembles ranging from small chamber ensembles to various local rap and rock artists to large wind and orchestral ensembles, including the Phoenix Symphony and Salt River Brass. 7 Private Instructor - Trumpet Michael Arnold has received his B.M in Trumpet Performance from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently studying with Ray Sasaki for his Masters Degree at UT. He has received mentor-ship from widely successful trumpet players such as Bert Truax (Former Dallas Symphony Trumpet player) and Paul Marcello (Principle of Montreal Symphony). He has a growing studio of young musicians in the Austin/Pflugerville/Round Rock area, and is currently active as a freelance performer in Central Texas. Michael has performed in a variety of concert settings, from symphonic concerts to musicals to touring/ recording with funk/rock bands such as T Bird and the Breaks, Candiland, Galactic, Moon Tower, Holiday, and KP and the Boom. 8 Private Instructor - Trombone Dr. Kenneth Darren Workman, Bass Trombonist, is currently the Assistant Professor of Trombone at Texas Lutheran University. He is one of the founding members of the Live Oak Brass Quintet here in Austin. Dr. Workman is a freelance performer on Bass Trombone and Tenor trombone in the Central Texas area. Before moving to Austin, Dr. Workman graduated from East Davidson High School and attended the Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, from In 2006, he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education. In 2007, Dr. Workman moved to Austin to enroll in the graduate music program at The University of Texas at Austin where he received his Masters of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts. Since then, he has served as a member of UT Trombone Choir, winners of the 2002 International Trombone Association's Emory Remington Award. While in graduate school, Dr. Workman won many awards in competitions such as the 2010 Easter Trombone Workshop Division III solo competition and Big solo bass trombone competition. Dr. Workman currently serves a substitute player for the New World Symphony and Houston Symphony. In addition to his studies, he teaches private and group music lessons (primarily tuba and euphonium) throughout the Austin area. Mr. Frost has taught with AISD music programs the past three years. His experience playing the tuba has found him performing with professional orchestras, bands, and brass chamber groups, competing in international solo competitions, and working with first-rate musicians and educators on a daily basis. 10 Private Instructor - Percussion A native of Victoria, Texas, Andrew is currently teaching and arranging for the percussion section at Stephen F. Austin High School. He has appeared as a soloist with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Eastman Percussion Ensemble, and has recorded with the University of Texas and Eastman Wind Ensembles. Recently, he has also performed with the Midland Odessa Symphony & Chorale, Chorus Austin, and the Austin New Music Co-op. Andrew received his Bachelor's degree in Music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and Master s degree from the University of Texas at Austin. 11 Private Instructor - Percussion Cullen Faulk is a founding member of the Austin-based percussion trio line upon line percussion, in which he vigorously commissions, performs, and promotes new music in the percussion genre. The group has self-released a full length album and has performed both locally and nationally at places including the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Round Top Percussion Festivals (Roundtop, TX), Fast Forward Contemporary Music and Arts Festival (Austin, TX), South by Southwest Music Festival. line upon line also believes strongly in educating young musicians on the practice, performance, and importance of the genre of percussion chamber music and has performed masterclasses, clinics, and showcases at many middle schools, high schools, and universities both in Austin and around the United States. In May 2012, the group presented its first national music festival celebrating the works of composer Iannis Xenakis. Cullen's playing career began in earnest while attending Victoria Memorial High School, where he was a member of the VMHS Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Phillip Mikula. While in this group, he performed at the 2003 Bands of America National Honor Band and Percussion Ensemble Convention (Indianapolis, IN) and the 2004 Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Nashville, TN. He, then, continued his studies at the University of Texas at Austin with professors Dr. Thomas Burritt and Tony Edwards, making a second appearance at the 2006 PASIC (Austin, TX) with the UT Percussion Ensemble. Also an active freelance performer and teacher, Cullen has performed with various groups and artists including Tom Burritt, Michelle Schumann, the Cage Percussion Players (dir. Thad Anderson), as well as many rock and pop acts in Austin. As a teacher, he has taught both privately and in a classroom setting throughout Austin and South Texas at the middle and high school levels since When not working with line upon line or teaching, Cullen is a member of the light-hearted but dedicated pop-rock group The Gorgeous Hands.
