4 Hydrophobic low maintenance coatings create a surface that repels water and the minerals it carries so fewer drops stick to and dry on the glass The Benefits: Fewer spots leading to less cleaning More hygienic and brilliant surface Greener environment where harsh chemicals are not used

5 Glass and other silica surfaces have microscopic ridges, peaks and valleys, that trap contaminants Contaminants can corrode and permanently damage the surface Hydrophobic coating provides a smooth layer that repels water, dirt and other contaminants to keep surfaces cleaner longer

6 Hydrophobic coatings can be compared to common items we use everyday: Non-stick cooking pans What a non-stick cooking pan does for you in the kitchen, a low maintenance coating does for you in the bathroom and elsewhere

7 There are a wide range of coatings to choose from based on performance, application method, cost, technical support, etc. A good hydrophobic coating will repel water AND other contaminants, such as dirt and oil Certain silicone films and diamond-like carbon coatings may even strengthen surfaces and make them more impact and scratch resistant

11 What do we mean by Hydrophobic? Hydrophobicity: Water-repellency of a surface Contact angle is a scientific measurement: The higher the number, the higher the water repellency of the surface

13 There are many types of hydrophobic coatings on the market, but only three types of coatings that are typically used in architectural applications: Silicone Film Resin-Based Diamond-Like Carbon

17 Chain of Custody The unbroken trail of accountability that ensures the physical security of samples, data and records (Dictionary.com) Tests may look the same and are from the same facility, but you must read through the tests to see that the Chain of Custody was properly followed

To ensure a true, non-bias, independent test: The independent lab procured the samples themselves, were given specific directions from the manufacturer, and the chemical was applied exactly by the directions.

25 The more water-repellent the surface, the more water will bead off, the fewer minerals and contaminants the water carries will be deposited on the glass. This was the belief at the time, and still is for many We learned this is not always true Just because a surface is repellent, does not mean water will slide off
