1 Tennis Play and Stay Seminar 2012 SPEAKER DANIEL ABSOLON (GREAT BRITAIN) Daniel holds a Geography and Development Studies degree from the University of Sussex and an MA in International Relations and Policy from the University of Sussex in the UK. He worked in Environmental Policy, specifically water and sanitation policy in the developing world, before joining the International Tennis Federation in Daniel worked as the wheelchair tennis development officer, responsible for the ITF Silver Fund and Development projects. In 2011 Daniel joined the Tennis Foundation. As Disability Development Manager Daniel is responsible for increasing participation opportunities for disabled people in the UK. As Manager Daniel is responsible for all aspects of tennis for disabled people including strategic operational planning, growing the tennis infrastructure, coach education, promotion and marketing. He has undertaken workshops, clinics, attended tournaments and spoken at conferences in more than 40 countries and supports the growth of all Paralympic sports through his role on the IPC Development Committee. SARA ACWORTH (GREAT BRITAIN) Sara spent 5 years in the marketing team at the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) encouraging more people to get out and play tennis, in particular youngsters. Her work with the LTA included a lot of work with the clubs, counties and coaches who deliver tennis as well as with the business partners who sponsor tennis. Mini Tennis which was sponsored by Ariel at the time, was one of the success stories. As a consultant she continues to focus on growing sports at the grass roots. She is passionate about getting young people involved in as many different sporting opportunities as possible and helping governing bodies to present their sport in the most appealing way. SUNE ALENKAER (DENMARK) Sune Alenkaer is the current CEO for the Danish Tennis Association. Before taking up this position, he was Department Director for Coach Education, Tournaments and Development for 4 years within the Association. He has been working specifically on implementing programs, aimed at optimizing recruitment and retaining members in Denmark. Sune has a tennis background as a club player and worked for several years as professional chair umpire at Davis Cups, Grand Slams and major ATP events. He holds a law degree from University of Copenhagen and before joining the Danish Association in 2008, Sune worked at Amnesty International, overseeing the implementation of CSR strategies in private equities. ALEX BALFOUR (GREAT BRITAIN) KIRK ANDERSON (USA) Kirk Anderson is the Department Director for Coach Education and Development for the United States Tennis Association. He is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association and the Professional Tennis Registry and holds the Master Professional classification from both organizations. He has a Bachelor s degree in Physical Education and a Master s degree in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University. He is a graduate of the USTA High Performance Coach program and is certified by the International Youth Conditioning Association as a Youth Fitness Specialist. 2 Kirk has published dozens of articles in the United States and internationally and written seven books on tennis. He is a popular speaker and presenter at international, national and regional workshops. In 2003, Anderson received the International Tennis Hall of Fame Educational Merit Award, was named Person of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry magazine in 2006, and the Professional Tennis Registry Professional of the Year in MIKE BARRELL (GREAT BRITAIN) Based in the UK, Mike has taught tennis for over 25 years working with players of all levels and is the Founder and CEO of evolve9. Mike has presented at numerous National and International conferences, authored magazine articles and manuals. He has work on programs for USTA, Tennis Australia, LTA (GB), Chinese Tennis Association and other tennis nations including Holland, Norway, Estonia, Cyprus and Hungary. Mike is the author of the ITF Tennis10s Manual and has a been a major contributor to Under 10 programs around the World. As well as his role as Director of evolve9, he also works for the LTA as a Coach Education Master Tutor, delivering coach education, certification and training. An LTA Level 5 Licensed Coach, he was also the 2007 PTR Professional of the Year. RUEDIGER BORNEMANN (GERMANY) MARK BULLOCK (ITF) Mark holds an Economics degree from the University of Nottingham (1989) and an MSc in Recreation Management from Loughborough University (1991) in the UK. He was Athletic Union President at the University of Nottingham from and worked as Tennis Development Officer for the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre from before moving to the Welsh National Tennis Centre in Cardiff to perform the same role. In 1997 he returned to the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre as General Manager, a role he performed until joining the ITF in He is the former coach to the Great Britain Men's Wheelchair Tennis team. He attended 4 Invacare World Team Cups and the 1996 Paralympic Games. He was the personal coach of Jayant Mistry, the former British No. 1, for a number of years. He also worked with wheelchair athlete Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson at the 1996 Olympic Games. In 2001 Mark joined the International Tennis Federation as the Development Officer for wheelchair tennis before becoming the Manager of the Department in As Manager Mark is responsible for all aspects of the sport including development, coach education, the World Team Cup, the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, communications, classification and the wheelchair tennis event at the Paralympic Games. He has undertaken workshops, clinics, attended tournaments and spoken at conferences in more than 60 countries and has been instrumental in a project to develop low cost sports wheelchairs for developing countries. In 2010 Mark received a Special Achievement Award from the University of Nottingham for his work in wheelchair tennis. DAN BURROWS (GREAT BRITAIN) VITOR CABRAL (PORTUGAL) JAMIE CAPEL-DAVIES (ITF) Jamie Capel-Davies is the Manager of the Science & Technical department of the ITF. He joined the ITF in 2002, having graduated from the University of Nottingham with a MEng degree in Mechanical Design, Materials and Manufacture. He develops and manages the research and testing programmes of the ITF Technical Centre, which is responsible for protecting the nature of tennis and encouraging innovation in the sport. He has worked on the introduction of automated line-calling into tennis, the addition of durability testing to ball approval, the development of court pace rating, and most recently the launch of ITF Recognition of tennis courts. 4 KAREN CLYDESDALE (AUSTRALIA) Karen Clydesdale is currently the Cardio Tennis Leader for Tennis Australia. Karen has worked with Tennis Australia and Tennis Coaches Australia for 21 years in a variety of National Development roles, including National Participation Manager, Coach Membership Manager and Cardio Tennis Program Manager. Karen has worked as a lecturer & facilitator in marketing at Deakin University, Holmesglen TAFE, local government, Oceania Tennis Federation for the ITF, Bowls Australia and has run a range of ChildsPlay Marketing workshops for small businesses and franchise companies. Karen has a Diploma in Nursing, Degree in Recreation, Post Graduate in Business (sport management) and Certificate IV in training. Karen holds Tennis Australia Club Professional coaching qualifications. Karen is an Australian Sports Commission s Women s scholarship recipient and currently studying an MBA Certificate of Change Management at University of NSW. MIGUEL CRESPO (ITF) Miguel is the Research Officer for the Tennis Development Department of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Based in Spain, Miguel is responsible for the ITF Coaches Education Programme and has been involved in the writing of many of the ITF s coach education publications including: the ITF Advanced Coaches Manual; the ITF School Tennis Initiative Teachers Manual; the ITF s Being a Better Tennis Parent, and The Tennis Volunteer among other publications. He also travels the world conducting coaches workshops and reporting on the latest developments in the field of coaching. Miguel holds a Ph.D. in Sports Psychology and a B.A. in Philology. He is former Director of the National Coaching School of the Real Federación Española de Tenis. Between 1984 and 1989, Miguel was a travelling coach and captain of Spanish National Junior Teams. Miguel has taught coaches at all levels and has written articles and books for coaches, players and officials of the game. SOPHIE CURTHOYS (GREAT BRITAIN) Sophie has been working at the LTA for 5 years and is responsible for the development of products to grow participation in the sport. The core product focus for the LTA at present is LTA Mini Tennis, Cardio Tennis and Tennis Xpress with the programmes team developing the product based on research and insight into the target market; and supporting the LTA field team to roll out the programmes across their network of priority clubs and tennis venues. Whilst at the LTA Sophie has also been responsible for writing and implementing Tennis Clubmark, improving the support and resources offered to volunteers and developing relationships with external stakeholders to support the delivery of tennis. Prior to working at the LTA Sophie held a number of positions at Sport England, the government funded organisation responsible for the development of sport in England. JOLYN DE BOER (USA) MAX DE VYLDER (BELGIUM) Max is the Research & Development manager for the LTA. As master in physical education and sport science he was involved in writing and delivering applied biomechanics and motor learning in the Belgian coach education, as well as teaching tactics and technique in the different levels of tennis coaching courses. He also worked as coach for the Belgian tennis federation and has extensive experience in working with promising junior players. Currently he is working on the implementation of an extensive Talent ID programme and the training of the LTA coaches on the quality of a 10&U performance programme. 5 DIETER DELLAERT (BELGUIM) Dieter Dellaert is a part time consultant at the Flemish Tennis Federation. As a consultant Dieter acts as the link between the federation and the clubs. He provides clubs with direct feedback, organises coach education and evaluates clubs each year. Together with a team Dieter coordinates research to assist the development of tennis player at each level. As a coach Dieter is also part of the day-to-day operations in one of the leading Tennisschools in Flanders. KRIS DENT (ITF) MICHAEL EBERT (AUSTRIA) Michael is a Certified Austrian Tennis Coach, and PTR-Professional. He is also a Junior Touring Coach (ITF, TE) and an International speaker for kids and junior tennis. He is founder and president of the tennis4kids Academy. He is author of the tennis4kids which is a Step by Step Learning Program. He is the Austrian National Director for Kids Tennis and Austrian National Head Coach for Kids & Junior Tennis Development (8-14). He is ITF/Tennis Austria Coordinator "Play & Stay" and "Tennis 10s". HASSAN ELAROUSSY (EGYPT) Hassan is a former Egypt Junior Champ U16 & U18 (86/89); Arab & African Junior Champ (87/88); Top 50 ITF Junior (88/89); Egypt Champ Men s & Doubles (89/90); Davis Cup player for Egypt: (87/92); and US College Tennis: Ranked Top 25 NCAA (92). Since retiring from professional tennis, Hassan s work experience includes Founder & Head of Development Sportfolio (Aroussy Tennis & Sports) Director, Palm Aroussy Tennis Academy ( and Director, Egypt Play+Stay ( In recent years, Hassan has been a member of the Egyptian Organising Committee ITF 17 th WWCC Egypt 2011; member of the new Egyptian Tennis Federation Technical Committee (2012); and is currently and ITF Coach Education Tutor. DIEGO GARCIA (ARGENTINA) MIKE JAMES (GREAT BRITAIN) Mike played College Tennis at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1992 with a degree in History and supporting Minor in English Literature. Over the last 20 years he has coached at every level of the game from Mini Tennis and adult beginners to worldranked junior and senior players, both here at Halton but also in various roles with the LTA and for a period as National Performance Officer for Tennis Scotland where he observed Andy Murray developing as a youngster. Mike is passionate about the coaching process, both on and off the court. Over the last few years he has developed a deep interest in personal and organisational development, and in particular the dynamics of High Performance team-work and mental resilience. Mike is an LTA Coach Education Tutor delivering on the Senior Performance Coach Course, is a Certified HeartMath Sports Professional and is currently studying NLP and Sport Psychology. 6 TIM JONES (ITF) Tim is the Participation Officer for the Tennis Development Department of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Based in London, Tim coordinates the Tennis Play and Stay campaign daily, overseeing the delivery of the supporting programmes Tennis10s, the International Tennis Number (ITN) and the development of the soon to be launched Tennis Xpress adult starter tennis programme. Alongside this role, Tim works closely with the ten ITF Development Officers around the world to administer the ITF Junior Tennis Initiative (JTI) across 160 nations. Prior to the ITF, Tim worked for Badminton England as the Regional Development Officer for the South West of England; worked as International Marketing Support for a global steel company; coached both Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield men s and women s first teams; as well as coach at Sydney University, Australia and a variety of tennis clubs in Great Britain. Tim was Athletic Union President for Sheffield Hallam University (05/06) and British University Sports Association (now, BUCS) Student Director (06/07). Tim holds a BSc (Hons) in Sports Management (02/05) and an MSc in International Marketing (06/07), both from Sheffield Hallam University, Great Britain. Tim has been a licensed British tennis coach since 2001, having begun assisting coaching in Tim is a level 4 LTA Senior Performance Coach. CESAR KIST (BRAZIL) Cesar Kist was a member of the 1986 Brazilian Davis Cup Team. His best ATP ranking in singles was 119 (in 1986) and in doubles he reached number 79 (in 1987). For 3 years he was the coach of Goichi Motomura, who held the Japanese number 1 ranking and was a member of the Japanese Davis Cup team. He also worked with Kyoko Nagatsuka who reached a WTA ranking of 28 and participated in the Atlanta Olympics. He was owner and technical director of all programs developed in the Cesar Kist Tennis Academy, including private lessons, group lessons, school programme, mini -tennis, competitive training, clinics and events. Current as Development Director of the Brazilian Tennis Federation, he has been responsible for the Coaching Education Department, Tennis at School Programme, Play and Stay and Tennis 10 s. He is also graduate as an ATP coach and member of the ITF Coaches Commission since 2008, delivering several courses and symposiums all over Brazil and abroad. MARK KOVACS (USA) Mark Kovacs, Ph.D. joined the USTA Player Development staff in 2008 and is the Senior Manager of Sport Science/Strength & Conditioning & Coaching Education. Mark was an All-American and NCAA doubles champion at Auburn University. After playing professionally, he pursued his graduate work performing tennis-specific research and has a graduate degree in Exercise Science from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from The University of Alabama. Dr. Kovacs is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a certified Health/Fitness Instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine, a United States Track and Field Level II sprints coach and also a USPTA certified tennis coach. Mark has published and presented tennis specific research in numerous top scientific journals and at national and international conferences. He is also an author of the tennis conditioning text Tennis Training: Enhancing On-Court Performance, Tennis Anatomy, Dynamic Stretching and is currently the Assistant Editor-in-Chief of the Strength and Conditioning Journal. 7 MICHELE KRAUSE (USA) Michele Krause is the Global Cardio Tennis Manager working for the Tennis Industry Association (TIA). Since the rollout of Cardio Tennis in 2005 there are now 1,800 Authorized Providers and 1.5 million Cardio Tennis participants in the US and the program has spread to over 30 countries. Michele oversees the entire Cardio Tennis program both in the US and internationally. Her responsibilities include all the day-to-day operations: administration, programming, curriculum, event planning, training and marketing. She also serves as the coordinator for those countries who are in the process of establishing, launching or continued development of Cardio Tennis. She also trains coaches how to deliver the product through national and international training courses. Michele has developed Cardio Tennis Kids, Supersize Cardio Tennis and TRX Cardio Tennis. Cardio Tennis was featured on NBC s the Biggest Loser under Michele s guidance with Anna Kournakova and she secured Anna as the Cardio Tennis spokesperson. Michele is a USPTA and PTR tennis professional and a USTA National trainer. She is formally educated in TRX Suspension Training, is an Ignite (Combine) 360 Certified Trainer and Etcheberry Certified. Michele continuously strives to improve the Cardio Tennis experience for both the tennis professional and the consumer. MIGUEL MIRANDA (ITF) Miguel Miranda has been the ITF Development Officer Advisory for South America for the past 16 years. He works closely with the South American Tennis Associations and COSAT. His role is to advise the National Associations as well as to monitor the different development programs promoted by the ITF in his region. Some of these programs include Schools Tennis Initiative, implementation and management of coaching courses at all levels. Miguel has worked with Juniors players and has travelled as a coach with Chilean and international teams. He is a lecturer at regional and worldwide conferences. He has written various articles for magazines in different countries. Miguel was the General Manager of the Tennis Federation of Chile for 4 years and has taught tennis for over three decades to players of all levels. He owns with his brother the Club "140" in Maipu, the oldest private Tennis Club in Chile. Miguel completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Chile. DAVE MILEY (ITF) Dave is the ITF Executive Director of Tennis Development and is responsible for overseeing the juniors, seniors and wheelchair activities of the ITF as well as the ITF Development Programme. Since joining the ITF in 1991 he has visited over 100 countries advising National Associations, conducting coaches workshops and directing junior training programmes. Dave has been involved in the writing of many of the ITF s coach education publications including: the Advanced Coaches Manual; the ITF Schools Tennis Initiative Teachers Manual; and the ITF s Being a Better Tennis Parent. Dave has been a British LTA Level 3 Professional Coach since 1984, was Irish Men s Doubles Champion in 1984 and 1987 and is a former captain of the Irish National Men s Team. 8 JAMES NEWMAN (GREAT BRITAIN) James Newman helped to develop Tennis...Play and Stay and Tennis 10s working as the former ITF Participation Officer, previous to which he worked with the British LTA on youth tennis programmes. Since leaving the ITF, James has operated his own consultancy from South America, working with clubs and federations in Argentina and Peru. James is now based in the North-East of England where he coaches Tennis 10s sessions for performance players at the Northumberland Tennis Academy. He also operates his own Peak Performance Consultancy 'OnePsych.com' working with topranked British juniors to help improve their mental performance. James has an BA in Business and Management an MSc in Sport Psychology and is an LTA Level 3 coach. RUBEN NEYENS (BELGUIM) Ruben Neyens is a consulent at the Flemish Tennis Federation. BERNARD PESTRE (FRANCE) Bernard has worked for the Fédération Française de Tennis (FFT) since During the last fourteen years, he has been in charge of the FFT s Formation and Enseignement (Training and Education) Department. As the Associate Technical Director of the FFT, he has taken part in the development of the high performance pathway and coaching strategy of the FFT for many years. He has produced many books and videos for the FFT on topics such as mental training, competition formats, pedagogy, etc. Prior to this, Bernard oversaw the development of France s top Under/21 boys among whom were Boetsch, Delaître, Benhabiles, Raoux and Champion. He also captained French teams that competed in the Borotra Cup, European Winter Cup, World Youth Cup, Galea Cup and European Nations Cup. Bernard is also a member of the ITF Coaches Commission. RONALD POTHUIZEN (NETHERLANDS) Before joining the KNLTB as Manager of Sports Promotions, Ronald was a full time coach for 11 years. His education includes study through the Dutch Sports Academy system where he studied both Sports Management and Sports Event Management. In his continued role at the KNLTB he is responsible for the development of Tennis Kids, the Official Under 10 Program for the Netherlands, and the Under 10 National Competition framework. Ronald has been a Member of the ITF taskforce for Play and Stay since 2002, and is Chairman of the ITF adult expert group. Through the ITF and evolve9 he has delivered workshops and consultancy in China, Dominican Republic, Lithuania, Cyprus, Kenya, Greece, the Caribbean, Germany, Moldova and Macedonia. 9 OLLY SCADGELL (GREAT BRITAIN) Head of Competition and Programmes at the LTA, Olly has worked for the LTA for the past 10 years in a variety of roles across competition, including responsibility for international competition as well as the domestic junior and adult competition structures with a focus on increasing the number of players competing regularly. His responsibility also extends to the support of competition, overseeing the management and development of officials, organisers, ratings and rankings systems and competition management software. More recently Olly has also taken on the responsibility for developing products to support participation growth and he led the team who refreshed Mini Tennis in the UK. GORAN SHEVCHENKO (MACEDONIA) Goran started his coaching career in 1995 working in Tennis Club Jug Skopje, Macedonia. He graduated from the Faculty of Physical Education and currently holds a Macedonian Tennis Federation (MTF) Level III coach and Level III tutor certificate. In the past 16 years, he has worked with top Macedonian junior players and was the national coach for more than 5 years. In 1998 he was selected to run the Coaches education in Macedonia and still holds the position, President of Coaches committee. In 2004, 2005, (2006 coach) and 2007 he was the Davis cup captain for Macedonia and made some remarkable results with the team. In 2006 he started to travel with the ITF/Tennis Europe Touring Teams and until now he is working as a traveling coach. In 2011 he started working for Tennis Europe at position of Development assistant. OIVIND SORVALD (NORWAY) MARK TENNANT (GREAT BRITAIN) Mark has over 20 years experience coaching in clubs and tennis centres in the UK, specialising in particular in coaching 10 and under players. He has been training coaches for the LTA and ITF for 15 years, and has tutored over 90 qualification courses for the LTA. More recently, Mark has been involved in the development and launch of the ITF Tennis Play and Stay campaign and Adults Tennis Xpress, working with the ITF and experts from other major nations, and wrote the ITF Tennis Play and Stay manual which has been translated into over 20 languages. Mark is a regular speaker at conferences worldwide, having presented in many parts of Africa, in Europe, North and South America and the Middle East both in English and French. He is also a member of the ITF Adults Working Group and was a member of the ITF Intro to Tennis Taskforce. In addition, Mark is used by the ITF and Tennis Europe to train tutors for national associations, and has trained tutors for Tennis Europe and the Confederation for African Tennis (CAT). Mark is Coach Education Director of inspire2coach, his own company which offers coach education worldwide and tennis facilities in the UK. inspire2coach is one of the largest trainers of Cardio Tennis in Europe, and the largest provider of Level 1 and Level 2 courses in the UK. Through the company he also offers his consultancy services to clubs and federations around the world, assisting in the design and development of coaching and coach education programmes and the training of coaches. 10 HRVOJE ZMAJIC (ITF) Hrvoje graduated from the Faculty of Physical Education, University of Zagreb, Zagreb as a Professor of Physical Education. The same year he completed the Tennis Training school organised by Faculty of Physical Education in Zagreb, where he was certified with the degree of Tennis Trainer. He is also a Tennis Trainer B by the German Tennis Federation. He obtained a Master degree at the Faculty of Physical Education, University of Zagreb, Zagreb. Since 1994, he has been writing articles published in Croatian Tennis review, ITF Coaches Review and has written several manuals for education of tennis coaches of different levels in Croatia. He has worked for the Croatian Tennis Association, the Tennis coach School founded at Faculty of Physical Education, University of Zagreb and has worked closely with Croatian Fed-cup captain Mr. Vjeran Friščić. He has been Croatian team captain for juniors under 14, and also member of The Croatian Tennis Association Sports Committee. He worked for ITF as a travelling coach for under 14 boys and girls. 2002, and become responsible person for coaches education (tennis) by Croatian Olympic committee.
