APPROVAL OF AGENDA Add item #8 staff meeting and education committee meeting dates and times Sinclair/Lee THAT the agenda be approved as amended.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM JANUARY 20, 2004 Tustian/Lee THAT the minutes of the Education Committee meeting of January 20, 2003 be approved with the following amendments: Committee Membership: Original statement: Discussion re: attendance of secretary-treasurer at Education Committee meetings. Amended to: Discussion of recording of excluded staff at Education Committee meetings. Alternate School Calendars Add: HSS PAC Letter circulated and discussed re: advantages and disadvantages of alternate school calendars 4. DISTRICT REVIEW Superintendent Neumeier Superintendent Neumeier reported that the District Review process will take place from April 13 to 15, The team leader is Superintendent Gary Graf from School District No. 54 (Bulkley Valley). The purpose of the review is to improve student achievement at the district and school levels. Goals will be reviewed on ten dimensions: goals, rationale, data, strategies, structures, results, communications, teamwork district and school coherence, teamwork district and parent involvement, leadership/teamwork. District Team members: Trustee and partnership representatives will be approved at a future Board meeting. One additional AEC member and two additional school-based principals will be added to the original list of team members that was circulated and discussed. Superintendent Neumeier will be reviewing parent participation at a PAC/DPAC meeting on March 11, 2004 The review team will visit all 13 schools in our district. They will review school data and growth plans and develop a report on site (review process and schedule circulated and discussed).

3 Superintendent Neumeier reviewed revisions made to the District Growth Plan. We are moving away from referring to subgroup population achievement and comparative statements. 5. PROVINCIAL REPORT CARDS Roxanne Watson, Randy Lee, Lori Izawa Primary Report Cards No consistency in responses between and within districts Letter circulated from Kent Elementary School re: concerns of new report card Harrison Hot Springs Elementary School interested in piloting the new report card Concerns expressed: principles of learning not reflected skill development versus subject development necessity of ranking questioned assessment range is too broad section needs to be included re: parental support for student learning needs jargon is difficult for parents to understand Intermediate Report Cards differentiation needed between reading and writing Social Responsibility and Personal Planning is there a need for separate categories, as Social Responsibility is already included in Personal Planning. Parent representative noted that the question of separating Social Responsibility and Personal Planning was not mentioned for Kindergarten report cards in the parent session attended Drop-down menu needed for modified/adapted programs Letter grades - F should be added Templates are available for classes with multiple teachers and single teachers. The preference is the multiple teacher template Secondary Teachers The following revisions need to be considered: Additional space Column flexibilities for semester schools Interim reporting needs to be included Honour Roll Status GPA Grad Requirements Child needs to be changed to student

4 Availability of access on-line (capacity re: technology was questioned) Input Report cards are in draft form Ministry is looking for input re: content, format and question of mandating a provincial report card March 26, 2004 BCPVP meeting Ken Foster attending and will report back if there are further updates March 31, 2004 deadline for input, decision to be made re: mandating use of provincial report cards Website for input: Trustee Sinclair thanked the committee for an excellent report on provincial report cards 6. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS/ BOARD/AUTHORITY APPROVED COURSES Peter Richmond, Ken Foster Graduation Requirements committee has met three times to review requirements and BAA courses Grade 11 and 12 will continue to offer locally developed courses during the 2004/05 school year Grade 10 Leadership, Peer Tutoring, Outdoor Pursuits, Personal Fitness to be developed by March 11, 2004 and presented as per the template at the March 23, 2004 Board meeting Career Prep courses not currently available Districts are now using Ministry developed courses Locally developed courses will be converted to BAA courses, rather than developing BAA courses There is no limit on the number of BAA courses, formerly known as locally developed courses, which may be used as part of the 28 electives needed to fulfill graduation requirements for the Graduation Program SURVEY RE: EDUCATION COMMITTEE MANDATE - Trustee Fraser Trustee Fraser reported on the results of the Education Committee Survey (circulated and discussed). No change to current practice re: meeting times, location, purpose, representatives, voting rights, selection of chair, and format to remain the same.

5 8. EDUCATION AND SCHOOL STAFF MEETING DATES AND TIMES a. Two education committee members have school staff meetings the first Tuesday of every month. Dates and times to be considered for future education committee meetings. This will not be a problem at the May 18, 2004 education committee meeting.
