1 Meeting Minutes UAS Undergraduate Curriculum Committee November 20, 2015 Members in Attendance: C. Hay-Jahans, Chair x R. Brewer, Career Ed x A. Jones, Education x M. Trafton, Humanities x C. Blanchard moved to approve the agenda. C. Hassler seconded. The agenda was approved as presented Minutes from : (tape count 1:21) On Proposal 16-19, it was asked that primarily for transfer students be removed from the minutes and the rationale. Draft minutes from the last meeting are posted on the shared drive at \\berling\ay 15-16\Curriculum Committee\Minutes. C. Hassler moved to approve the minutes as amended from 10/16/15. A. Jones seconded. The minutes of the meeting were approved as amended Opening Remarks: (tape count 3:59) 1. Soon all curriculum proposals will be completed through CourseLeaf. It is expected to go live in February. 2. Reminder that any suggestions to proposals are only made to find solutions, it is not meant to be taken personally. 3. Every new course proposal s Learning Outcomes will automatically be amended by the Chair to start with Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:. Second Reading: (tape count 8:05) It was noted that all requested edits from first readings were received on time. It was also noted that no initiating faculty were required to attend the 11/20 meeting for second readings.
2 16-04 BA Elementary Education Category B Curriculum Change (tape count 8:40) The proposal raises admission GPA from 2.75 to 3.00 and proposes a change to catalog text which combines admission requirements #5 and #6 in into one requirement. A. Jones moved to pass second reading. H. Pearson & B. Urquhart seconded. The motion passed second reading ANS 101 Introduction to Alaska Native Studies Category A New Course Proposal (tape count 10:02) In addition to potentially serving as a requirement for the BLA, this course will also fulfill a cultural diversity option in the BLA. This course is intended to eventually fulfill an Alaska Native or Multicultural Education course for Alaska teacher certification purposes. Education faculty will be informed about this possibility. The earlier plan to remove/ replace ANTH 200 no longer applies. It was noted that the course number was changed to S101. B. Urquhart moved to pass second reading. A. Jones seconded. The motion passed second reading BA Social Science Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 13:41) The proposal changes all subject designators from Government (GOVT) to Political Science (PS) to conform with UAA and UAF, and to change the BA Social Science primary and secondary Government concentrations to Political Science concentrations. B. Urquhart moved to pass second reading. M. Trafton seconded. The motion passed second reading ANS 460 ANCSA & Tribal Governance Category A New Course Proposal (tape count 14:22) It was noted that this class aims to explore needs to be change to this class explores. It was noted that ANCSA was spelled out in the course description as requested. B. Urquhart moved to pass second reading with amended changes. C. Hassler seconded. The motion passed second reading BA Social Science Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 18:15) The proposal seeks to define the role of ANS 460 (Proposal 16-07) in the BLA Alaska Native Languages and Studies emphasis area and minor, and in the degree requirements for the BA Social Science primary and secondary emphasis in Government/Political Science. B. Urquhart moved to pass second reading. A. Jones seconded. The motion passed second reading BA Social Science Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 20:41) The proposal will remove the GER GOVT 230/PS 230 from UAS general education requirements and replace it with GOVT 202/PS 202. It was asked if GOVT 230 was intended to be removed from the catalog all together, it will be clarified with Glenn Wright after the meeting.

The motion passed second reading BA Social Science Category B Curriculum Change (tape count 23:18) The proposal will change language to allow American Sign Language to be used as a world language requirement for BA Social Science. B. Urquhart moved to pass second reading. C. Hassler seconded. The motion passed second reading PS 351 Political Sociology Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 24:20) The proposal adds Political Sociology as a cross listed (PS 351 & SOC 351) new course and will satisfy upper division requirements for the BLA and BA Social Sciences degrees. This was reviewed simultaneously with proposal SOC 351 Political Sociology Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 23:31) The new course is proposed to fill a need for an additional upper division GOVT/PS and SOC special topics/current issues course. Minor edits have been received, but the prerequisites needed to be updated as requested they were corrected during the meeting. J. Blanchard moved to pass second reading of and C. Hassler seconded. The motions passed second reading PS 458 Environmental Politics Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 26:01) After being offered as a well-attended special topics course for two semesters, the proposal adds Environmental Politics as a permanent course offering. It will be incorporated into Outdoor Studies certificate and BLA course requirements. There were small typos corrected during the meeting. A. Jones moved to pass second reading. B. Urquhart seconded. The motion passed second reading PS 467 Latin American Politics Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 27:35) After being offered as a special topics course several times, PS 467 is being proposed as a regular course offering. It was suggested that Latin American s relationship with the United States should have as well as instead of and preceding it. It was edited during the meeting. J. Blanchard moved to pass second reading as amended. H. Pearson seconded. The motion passed second reading SOC 305 Sociology of Food Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 31:25) After being offered twice as a well-attended current issues course, the proposal seeks to make SOC 305 a permanent course offering and will satisfy upper division SOC requirements for the BLA and BA Social Science degrees.

The motion passed second reading SOC 345 Education and Society Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 32:10) After being offered twice as a well-attended special topics course, the proposal seeks to make SOC 345 a regular course offering and is planned to be used as a current issues course in fall The course description will be revised to say: Topics include the dynamics of race class and gender in schools, as well as the reproduction of inequality through schooling. Also addresses institutional socialization functions and social change and innovation at different levels of education. J. Blanchard moved to pass second reading as amended. B. Urquhart seconded. The motion passed second reading SOC 380 Social Movements Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 38:25) After being offered twice as a full-enrollment special topics course, the proposal adds SOC 380 as a regular course offering that will satisfy upper-division SOC elective for BLA and BA Social Science degrees. An editable PDF was provided as requested. H. Pearson moved to pass second reading. J. Blanchard seconded. The motion passed second reading ENVS 302 Glaciology Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 39:53) This course will replace GEOL 310 Glaciation and Climate Change and will serve as an elective for BS Environmental Science and BS Geography. All clarifications on prerequisites were received. H. Pearson moved to pass second reading. A. Jones seconded. The motion passed second reading First Reading: (tape count 42:41) The Chair will be reserving time for second readings of those proposals for which first readings were clean (no major revisions required) BA English Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 43:30) The proposal seeks to change the current BA English to be inclusive of AKL 350 Tlingit Oral Literature in all emphasis areas. It was asked if Tlingit Oral Literatures should include Haida and Tsimshian oral literatures, or if it is exclusive to Tlingit Oral Literatures. It was noted that in the catalog, AKL 350 only addresses Tlingit oral literature, and it was proposed that the rationale of the proposal should be amended to be exclusive to Tlingit oral literatures. Math Trafton (Humanities Rep.) indicated that other Alaska Native oral literature courses might be included with time. It was decided to not make any changes to the rationale.
5 H. Pearson moved to pass first reading. C. Hassler seconded. The motion passed first reading without BLA Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 49:54) The proposal adds Alaska Native Languages and Studies as a primary and secondary field within the Interdisciplinary Studies BLA. It was asked why designated emphasis of Alaska Native Languages and Studies, why is it being added to Interdisciplinary Studies. It was noted that the BLA is undergoing some changes. It was also asked that possible electives used for prerequisites be put into a list for the Registrar s office to offset potential issues in Degree Works. There were several typos that needed to be corrected in the catalog description, in addition to the rationale. A. Jones moved to pass first reading. B. Urquhart seconded. The motion passed first reading without ENVS S213 Natural Hazards Category A New Course Proposal (tape count 59:38) The proposal changes the course number from 213 to 212 as the lab portion of the course will be removed, a change to catalog description. The course will be cross-listed with GEOG 213. The course serves as a course option for the Environmental Science BS and the Geography BS and BA degrees. There was a note that the course description needs to say this is a cross-listed course. This was looked at simultaneously as GEOG S213 Natural Hazards Category A New Course Proposal (tape count 59:38) The proposal changes the course number from 213 to 212 as the lab portion of the course will be removed, a change to catalog description. The course will be cross-listed with ENVS 213. The course serves as a course option for the Environmental Science BS and the Geography BS and BA degrees. This was looked at simultaneously as There was a note that the course description needs to say this is a cross-listed course. J. Blanchard moved to pass first reading of both and H. Pearson seconded. The motions passed first reading GEOL S320 Geological Resources and the Environment Category A New Course Proposal (time count 1:04:44) Fulfills a need for an upper level Geology class. The course will be taught every other year. The course will fulfill a requirement for the Earth Systems and Climate Change concentration are for the Environmental Science BS and for Earth Systems requirement in Geography and Environmental Resources BS. The ampersand needs to be removed from the title. The prerequisite need to be changed to or. The title of the courses do not need to be added to the course description. It was noted that a preceding S needed to be added to the course number. Initiating faculty Sonia Nagorski joined for this part of the meeting.

The motion passed first reading without ENVS S375 Current Topics in Earth and Ecosystem Category A New Course Proposal (tape count 1:09:22) The course fulfills a need for a devoted current topics and research course in both the Environmental Studies and Geography programs. This course will be a capstone requirement for the Environmental Studies BS. The course will be taught once every other year. The Chair reduced the course description as it was too lengthy, it was approved by the initiating faculty member. The prerequisite completion of 3 science credits will require the teaching faculty to make sure any prerequisites are acceptable upon registration. H. Pearson moved to pass first reading. A. Jones, M. Trafton, and B. Urquhart seconded. The motion passed first reading ENVS 430 Forest Ecosystems Category A New Course Proposal (tape count 1:14:45) Taught previously as a special topics course, this will serve as a course option for the BS Environmental Studies Forest and Ecosystems concentration area. A proposal for a related optional Maymester lab has also been submitted. The Chair worked with the initiating faculty beforehand to tighten up the course description because of length. The opening sentence of the SLO s was adjusted. As are in the course description needed to be changed to as well as. In the prerequisites, and/or needs to be changed to just or. The role of climate change should be roles. J. Blanchard moved to pass first reading as amended. H. Pearson seconded. The motion passed first reading ENVS 431 Forest Field Ecology Lab Category A New Course Proposal (tape count 1:19:24) This proposal seeks to add a Maymester field ecology lab to be paired with proposal s Forest Ecosystems course. It will be a course option for Environmental Studies students. The Chair and initiating faculty member tightened the course description for length and standardization of SLO s before the meeting. The words all-day should be stricken as it will imply the course is only one day long. The course description should read the statistical software R and student collected should be hyphenated. A selection of should be removed. Will be featured should be added to the last sentence. A. Jones moved to pass first reading as amended. H. Pearson seconded. The motion passed first reading BS ENVS / BS GEOG Category B Curriculum Change (tape count 1:30:30) This proposal removes GEOL S310 Glaciation and Climate change from the catalog and replaces it with ENVS S302 Glaciology (proposal 16-27). It was noted to correct existing proposed catalog text boxes.

The motion passed first reading BIOL 250 changed to BIOL 350 (tape count 1:33:50) It was asked if someone took this as 250, could they take 350 again? It was said that was not the intent. Include the statement replaces BIOL 250 with BIOL 350 in the proposed catalog text. It was noted that in the catalog, there was a typo listing BIOL 253 as BIOL 250 that needs to be revised. Tropical marine and coastal ecology is the correct title. It was suggested to change the prerequisite to just BIOL 106 since 105 is a prerequisite to 106 anyway. C.
