Student Voices LCVI has enabled me to thrive during my high school years. I have had many enrichment opportunities both academically and in various extracurricular capacities. The extensions of curriculum that the Challenge Program provided in grades 9 and 10 were stimulating and thoroughly prepared me for my senior courses. I m now being exposed to university-level material in my AP classes; this is yet another way LCVI is preparing me for my post-secondary endeavors. I ve had the opportunity to be on the Volleyball and Rugby teams, a member of the Run Club, and part of three musical productions. I have also genuinely valued the many leadership opportunities I ve experienced as part of LCVI s Student Council, Link Crew, Leadership Camps, and Tech Crew. The leadership experiences I ve had here, and the careful mentorship that accompanied them from staff and older students, have played a fundamental role in my development. They also prepared me extremely well for my role as Student Trustee. The community of LCVI is another key factor in my success. Throughout my time at LCVI, I ve felt taken care of; the relationship between staff and students, and the feeling of inclusiveness that is fostered here provide an exceptional learning environment. The sense of safety in being able to recognize most people s faces is in itself a huge benefit of this size of school. I hope that future students are able to experience this truly holistic approach to personal development in a high-caliber learning environment such as this one. Grade 11 Student To me, Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute is my second home. Having attended school in the building for six years now, I have never felt better walking into any other building. I attended the L.E.A.P. program in grade 7 and 8, and after attending grade 8 parent night in the L.C.V.I. cafetorium, I knew that it was the place for me. The diversity of our school is one of its many strengths. From the arts focused L.E.A.P. program and the Challenge Program to the English as a Second Language program at our school, I feel like I have been exposed to people from all different walks of life, preparing me for the real world. I have made friends from all around the globe, expanding my horizons and feeding my cravings to learn more about the world around me. The best part is how well the large population of English as a Second Language students merge into our school culture. We truly are a family at L.C.V.I., accepting and supportive of one another. Half way through my fourth and final year at L.C.V.I., I can honestly look back and say that our school culture has shaped me into the person that I am today. Grade 12 Leap Student At the beginning of this school year, I transferred to Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute to spend my final year of high school in the Cook s internship focus program. At LCVI, I find there is a high level of maturity amongst the students; both the staff and students at the school are very welcoming and made me feel like I was a lancer after the first week of class. Also, the Cook s Internship Program that I am in has provided me with many opportunities that I have benefited from, such as meeting a celebrity chef, or receiving certificates that will be useful to me in the hospitality industry. Overall, LCVI and the Cook s Internship Program have been a great opportunity, which I have been lucky to have had. Grade 12 Cook s Internship Program Student There were many positive aspects of the Cook s Internship program being shown first-hand how to perform a certain task is of reading about it was very helpful. 5 Value to the Student (Secondary) more confident in the kitchen and felt I knew much more than I did before the course. We also learned first-hand the challenge, art, skill and discipline required to run a restaurant. Grade 12 Cook s Internship Program Student I'm a grade twelve student here at LCVI who started in one stream, but soon realized that I wanted to be able to go to university. All of my teachers and my guidance counselors were supportive of the decision and helped make the transitions as smoothly as possible. Once in the academic or university bound stream all of my teachers were willing to help me with anything extra and were always accommodating to the way that I learn. Overall I have found the four years at LCVI to not just be high school but also a chance to grow and learn about who you are as a person. Something that I have learned is that I learn differently from other people and that it's okay to be different, and being able to accept it. Part of being able to accept being different was partly due to how I was treated at LC and that it's okay to learn the way I learn; The support that I got until we found something that worked for me was fantastic and truly did make a difference to how I learn. The other part was being able to connect to a grade twelve student when I was in grade eleven and talk about the way he learns. He was able to show me that just because I learn differently doesn't mean that I can t do what I want. I have had an amazing four years at LC and I think that if you asked anyone they would say the same about LC. I feel that LC is a high school that when you walk into the building you get the sense of community and family. Grade 12 Student LCVI has given me a unique cultural experience that few other schools can offer. With the ESL program at LCVI we have a large population of international students that attend our school. I really value the fact that I am able to learn with peers that have not experienced the same culture that I grew up with because it allows me to share many exciting experiences without even leaving my home. I have experienced new music, language, fashion, pastimes and more from Mexico, Bulgaria, France, China, Japan, Burma, and so many other countries. This has also provided me with good leadership opportunities by allowing me to represent my country as a proud citizen and welcome others with endless kindness and generosity. I will remember these people for the rest of my life because they created a learning experience and friendships that cannot be obtained in any other way. Grade 12 Leap Student LCVI has provided me with a high school experience I would never give up. I truly believe my time both in and out of the classroom has shaped who I am today. In Gr. 9, I started in the Challenge program and through my senior year I have progressed into AP classes. These enrichment opportunities have allowed me to excel in classes each year and continue to prepare me for postsecondary education. Academics are not the only part of LC that have allowed me to enjoy my time here. The community is the main reason LC has made a significant impact on life. The staff-student relationships allow students to feel comfortable and welcome in the school and the support that is available for each student is continuous and never ceases to amaze me. Support is not just available through staff, but through student based groups that support other students; such as the multi-cultural club, gay straight alliance, and LINK Crew, which helps transition Gr. 9s to the school. Support like this is why LC s diverse background thrives as much as it does. LCVI is the only place I have ever seen that can welcome so many different people from so many different walks of life and still maintain a safe and secure environment. I have never in my 3 years felt that the size of our school had a negative impact on me. If anything I believe it is a positive attribute as it creates a personal, respectful and accepting community. Every person in the LCVI community has been taught that being a Lancer means being respectful, honourable and accepting and our school environment reflects that. Are all exterior sight lines unobstructed? If not, please indicate location and type of obstruction Additional Comments: Student Voice I have been present in the LCVI building for six years. I undertook the final years of my elementary education at Calvin Park Public School, and have undertaken my entire secondary education at LCVI. I have not once in these six years been threatened, either physically or through other means, by another student. I have never been intimidated by a staff member. I rarely see students mistreat each other in the hallways, and if such an incident occurs, bystanders, whether staff or other students, are quick to intervene and stop the conflict. In short, I have felt safe every single day of the nearly 1200 days I have spent in this building. The core factor that makes LCVI such a safe place is the mutual respect and trust between its staff and students. These feelings help to create a comfortable and safe atmosphere. The students are highly inclined to proper behaviour and to follow the rules; they understand that LCVI is a place of business. For the most part, students leave extra-curricular affairs at the doors; they do not allow these things to affect their learning ability or the learning ability of others. Should a student act in a disrespectful or unsafe manner, or a manner that impedes the learning ability of their peers, the staff are inclined to respond calmly and in a supportive way. Whatever the cause of the behaviour, even if it seems trivial, the staff deal with it in a serious and professional manner. These feelings of respect and trust also permeate the various groups within the student body. LCVI is one of the most diverse schools in the Limestone Board, welcoming the greatest number of foreign students of all secondary schools, and hosting several Focus Programs. As a result LCVI plays host to students with a variety of backgrounds, and does so with absolutely no tension. The students of LCVI respect each others' differences, whether they be differences in language, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or a myriad of other things, and are more often than not inclined to learn about and understand these differences. If students have difficulty accepting these differences, they deal with this difficulty in a professional manner, seeking out aid, and never lashing out at those whose differences they do not understand. 8 The feelings of respect and trust, shared between staff and students, help to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere at LCVI. When someone enters the school, we adopt them as one of our own; they become part of the LCVI family. They learn that we respect and trust each other, and act in a professional manner. They learn that we support each other in our differences, and never act aggressively towards whose differences we do not understand. They learn that LCVI is a safe place to be. 15 Other value to the community? Value to the Community LCVI both mirrors and reflects the diversity of the community; socially, economically and ethnically. Acceptance and integration is evident for all students including those with physical and intellectual disabilities. LCVI Cook s Internship program organizes community lunches which are well attended by the seniors in the community. LCVI serves as an Emergency Response Centre for the city of Kingston. How does this school reflect and support the values of the community for which it serves? LCVI reflects and supports the diverse religious and cultural groups found within its catchment area, and regularly consults on issues relating to social and religious questions. LCVI is a unique microcosm which encompasses all cultures found in the city of Kingston. LCVI embodies the spirit of treating others as you would like to be treated. It supports a charitable awareness of those in need within the community and its students have an active awareness of injustice; encouraging each other to stand up for the right things. LCVI also supports the interests of the immediate community with access to facilities for a number of community groups. LCVI supports the community of Kingston with specialized programming such as Challenge, LEAP and its focus programs. LCVI readily accepts newcomer families and ESL students and is well prepared to meet the special needs of these students and their families, including resource materials such as the Newcomer Parent Handbook. Additional Comments: LCVI truly embodies its motto; Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Each Other and Take Care of this Place A parent and community member sent us these comment which we have included below. As an ESL instructor with LINC (Language Instruction to Newcomers to Canada), LCVI has a vibrant community. LCVI creates social cohesion for these students and welcomes their diverse cultures. I would ask if the committee considered the effect that closing LCVI would have on the City of Kingston s initiative to attract to stay and live in Kingston. In May of 2010 Jason Kenney, the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism reported that the number of foreign students who came to Canada grew by seven percent last year, resulting in the highest number of foreign students ever admitted to Canada and that attracting more international students is a priority of our government. Statistics Canada predicts that the number of immigrants arriving in Canada is expected to increase significantly over the next two decades. A recent report on Canada s diversity projections states that By 2031, up to 28% of the population could be foreignborn, surpassing the 20 th century record set between 1911 and 1931, when 22% of the population was born outside the country. Kingston, through its recently launched Kingston Immigration Partnership (KIP), must ensure that it attracts its share of these immigrants in order to stay vibrant and economically stable.. 16 Are there any impacts on the local economy? Value to the Local Economy As with all secondary schools, many restaurants and businesses locate in the area and the students regularly take advantage of their presence. The local economy also benefits from the supply of specially trained students from the many focus programs. Many of LCVI s co-op program students work at the local businesses and many are hired after their co-op placement has finished. Many families choose to live in the LCVI catchment area because of the reputation and programming available to their students, and these families support the local businesses and services in the area. What are the impacts to the socio-economic elements of the community? The school recognizes that not everyone will go to college or university and offers a wide variety of programs which support those students. LCVI addresses the educational needs of many students who come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Through its learning centre LCVI is able to reach a greater number of adult learners, providing many opportunities which may not be available elsewhere. LCVI through its staff and students creates a unique cultural environment which produces better global citizens. Renovations Plus Studio LC Co-operative Education Impact on the community: There is a full co-op educations program running at LCVI. Students work at various businesses throughout the community and are often hired by the companies at the completion of co-op placement. Is the School the focal point of the community? Explain: LCVI is highly visible and accessible to the community. It is well situated in a central location and close to a transportation hub. The playing field, track and building are well used by the community including by groups such as senior citizens group, Grenadiers football, volleyball and sail making groups as well as several music groups make use of the facilities. 17 General Comments Summary We asked parents for input on a number of the questions in the profile and below are some of the opinions expressed on the negative impacts to the community if LCVI were to close. LCVI is a student focused/student centered school where each student has an equal voice in the school community. In order to facilitate integration of all students LCVI organized a cross grade house system and ensures that all incoming grade nine students and students new to LCVI are integrated into the LCVI family through the LINK crew. LCVI is a culturally diverse school where every student, staff or parent member is appreciated. Self expression and personal growth are encouraged in an atmosphere which is non-judgmental and safe from retribution.
