1 Crouse Hospital College of Nursing ROLE POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: OSHA JOB CLASS: IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: DEPARTMENT: STUDENT NURSE Exposed Faculty College of Nursing REVIEWED: April, 2011 ROLE SUMMARY Under the supervision of a faculty member or preceptor the student nurse is responsible for providing limited nursing care to those patients assigned by the faculty or preceptor. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS Some exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substance, ionizing radiation therapeutic preparations and other conditions common to a healthcare environment. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity/sensation and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts, carries and pushes items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Is expected to meet essential physical demands outlined for the registered professional nurse. (See attached.) Functional Demand Evaluation Company: Crouse Hospital Department/ Job: Registered Professional Nurse () Main Functions: The practice of the profession of nursing as a registered nurse is defined as diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as casefinding, health teaching, health counseling, and provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being (Title VII, Education Law: Article 139, Nursing). The RN is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating care for a given patient population with the established standards and practices of Crouse Hospital. This process is enacted through direct clinical practice, management of patient care and general professional activities. (Occasional = 1 33 % workday; Frequent = > % workday; Constant = > 66 % workday) Narrative Description of Essential Physical Demands: To perform the essential job tasks requires the physical ability to continuously stand/walk, reach, push/pull and observe/communicate within the range of a Medium PDC. This includes frequent bending and reaching (mostly moderate heights; i.e. adjustable bed and many functions are 2-person), lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Occasional low and awkward bending, reaching (e.g. patient repositioning, if patient has fallen and there is no one immediately available to help etc.). Coordination and communication with physicians, patient and other coworkers/personnel is essential. There is exposure to biologic contamination (e.g. isolation rooms) and procedures/protocols are strict requiring diligent adherence. Training and skill in patient handling is required and there is significant variability of patient size, level of cooperation and functionality, and these factors can significantly influence the physical demands (this FDE reflects the demands of someone trained to use assist devices, to get help and has moderate patient handling skills). There is frequent patient handling that involves bending, pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying and manual manipulation. There is exposure to biologic contaminants and protocols for each of the hospital units that are strict and require diligent adherence. This varies, including: gowns, gloves, respiratory masks, to surgical aseptic protocols. Patient handling and communication, patient observation and inspection (multiple senses) and interaction with physician and other hospital personnel, take vitals and operate basic in-room equipment within scope of practice, read, follow protocols and some computer entry (COW).
