Research Indicates Children do best if parents can play a variety of roles in their learning: helping at home, volunteering at school, planning their children s future, and taking part in key decisions about the school program. ~Henderson and Mapp, 2007

Parent Engagement Leadership Initiative (PELI) The Parent Engagement Leadership Initiative (PELI) is a research based program based on the belief that parents and family members are a child s first and most influential teachers and that sustained parent involvement in the education of their children contributes greatly to student achievement and a positive school environment. Training programs are based on Dr. Joyce Epstein s Six Types of Parent Involvement and include information on parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, and collaborating with the community. Additional topics include early childhood family engagement, secondary and administrator s information, welcoming schools and customer service materials for school and district staff members, and evaluation tools and methods. Support is provided by the Initiative for parent leaders, educators, and administrators as they begin and continue parent and family engagement programs and events. The Initiative provides access to current resources, information on training and leadership opportunities, and networking possibilities.

PELI Training Series A ten module research based series with a focus on creating Action Teams for Partnerships and Action Plans that support the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). Topics include: Parent Engagement: Key to Student Success Positive Parenting in Public Education Communicating Volunteering Learning at Home Decision Making Collaborating with the Community Action Team for Partnerships (three trainings)

These workshops provide specific details for creating an Action Team, information on how to develop and implement an Action Plan, and opportunities for celebrating success. Participants are encouraged to attend as school or district teams. General Action Team for Partnerships Training (6 hours All sites meet together) Participants will be trained on the Action Team for Partnerships format and the Action Plan structure. Four copies of School, Family, and Community Partnerships: Your Handbook for Action by Dr. Joyce Epstein, will be provided for each team. School Site Visits (2 hours per site): Visits will provide the Action Teams an opportunity to work with a trainer to develop detailed Action Plans. Additional ATP Training (3 hours - All sites meet together) Action Teams will receive training on ATP leadership and evaluation. School Site Visits (2 hours per site): Additional site visits to finalize Action Plans. Additional ATP Training (3 hours All sites meet together) Action Teams will have the opportunity to celebrate their progress.

Action Team for Partnerships Reviews school goals using the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). Writes a One-Year Action Plan for Partnerships that develops parent and family engagement activities to support school goals. Implements and evaluates the quality of the activities. Continually improves partnership plans, programs, and practices.

ATP Training Series Brochure

Additional PELI Trainings Early Childhood Education Training Series Uses Head Start s Parent, Family, and Community Engagement Framework and Dr. Joyce Epstein s Six Types of Parent Involvement to create a parent and family engagement training specifically directed toward early childhood education parents, teachers, and leaders. Secondary PELI Training Series Similar to the original PELI Training Series, these modules contain parent and family engagement information and materials for secondary parents, families, and educators. Administrator s Academy Specifically designed to provide site and district administrators an overview of a PELI Training Series. Reaching All Families Through Welcoming Schools Created for school and district administrators and front office staffs, this training focuses on creating welcoming schools and the benefits for students, families, and schools. At Your Service: Improving Parent Engagement in Schools Through Extraordinary Customer Service Designed to help schools and districts build a quality customer service program by developing better relationships among school personnel, families, and students that translate into increased academic success for all students and a community that sees itself as a true partner with its public school. Creating Strategic and Data Driven Partnerships Information for school districts on guiding schools in their parent and family engagement evaluation efforts, how to collect the evaluation documents, and what the data shows. School, Family, and Community Partnerships: How is it Working for You? A school focused training that provides research and information on evaluating the quality, progress, and results of parent and family engagement programs.

Additional PELI Resources Action Team for Partnerships (ATP) Network -- The Riverside County Action Teams for Partnerships Network offers an opportunity for members of district and school Action Teams for Partnerships (ATPs) to meet for the purpose of training, networking, and sharing successes. As ATPs become established and successful, the Network will work together to capture and capitalize on the on-going efforts and practices in parent and family engagement throughout Riverside County. Exemplary Practices in Parent Engagement This resource document provides information on exemplary and promising practices from schools, districts, and organizations throughout Riverside County. Family Engagement Leadership Conference (FELC) In partnership with the 23 rd District PTA this annual conference focuses on parent and family engagement leadership, training, and information, and in-depth PTA training for parent leaders.

Results The Action Team for Partnerships turns partnership plans into actions and partnership goals into results. ~ Epstein

The Big Key Train and involve first. Then encourage parents to participate as leaders.

Because Parents who are knowledgeable, comfortable, and experienced in the area of parent and family engagement tend to want to do more, will serve in various capacities, and are more committed to long term participation. Schools with strong family and community engagement programs tend to have higher levels of sustainable parent involvement. Research shows that schools that have high levels of parent involvement have increased academic achievement. ~Adapted from Epstein, 2009

PELI, ATP, and LCAP PELI Training Series provides participants with professional development in the area of parent and family engagement. Action Team for Partnerships provides the structure for parent and family engagement strategies. Local Control and Accountability Plan includes annual performance goals and specific plans to achieve them, including parent involvement. PELI + ATP + LCAP = SUSTAINED PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
