Annual Report 2014 A registered charity providing the best in elderly care since 1946
We are delighted to introduce Lilian Faithfull Homes Annual Review for This is a good way to communicate some of the great work we have done last year and also explain some of our plans for A word from the chair of trustees Our namesake - Lilian Faithfull - was a formidable woman who created our charity in At the inaugural meeting of supporters she famously declared, something must be done! after seeing s population suffering in old age despite having given so much during the war years. This was especially true for widowed or single ladies retiring from teaching and nursing professions, who had to leave their work-related accommodation. Today, I am delighted to say that we continue to carry the torch Lilian Faithfull handed to us. The general public is rightly concerned about the quality of care in residential homes, we actively encourage friends and family to drop in unannounced to see for themselves how their relative or friend is being looked after. People come to Lilian Faithfull to live out their days - enjoying social activities and having fun, even if they are living with dementia and other disabling conditions. Our staff is our lifeblood and as a Board we have committed that within three years all our staff will be paid at least the Living Wage. All our staff mean so much to us - they are undoubtedly the most compassionate, friendly and caring people, and we will do all we can to look after them. After all, it is our staff that provides the love and care for our residents. Since 1946 we have expanded dramatically and continue to look to do more throughout the county - from twelve residents living in one home, to 214 residents in four homes, with over three hundred staff. Our founder would be impressed by the introduction of modern equipment such as hoists and pressure-relieving beds, but some things never change - the caring relationship we have with all our residents. I am sure that Lilian Faithfull would be proud. Gill Pyatt Chair - Lilian Faithfull Homes
What makes Lilian Faithfull homes so good? We are governed by an experienced Board of Trustees not shareholders. We provide a higher staff-to-resident ratio than most other care homes. We provide better pay and conditions than the sector standard. We spend more than most care homes on nutritional food - accounting for 15% of expenditure. We provide a wide range of activities including sherry hour, cake decorating, gentle exercise, animal visits and music therapy. Review of 2014 Dowty House This has been a year of continued investment at Dowty House. We have refurbished many rooms, communal spaces and completely renovated the Victorian façade. The home continues to partner with County Council and works well with the Social Work teams. The staff are so dedicated at Dowty making the home a very vibrant place to live, featuring many times in the local press. In 2015 we start the next phase of refurbishing the building, looking at modernising many of the rooms in the 1960s wing and making the home even more comfortable for our residents. Astell House A busy year for Astell House, with many daily activities including a cheese and wine event for all residents, families and staff. The home continues to be busy, but it does provide our residents with an oasis of calm when needed. We continue to invest in the building and, more importantly, the catering team, where we have a new chef who has been producing home-made ice creams and nutritious personalised meals. Faithfull House This imposing and magnificent building sits in a prime position in. Faithfull House is the location for MAST, our trademarked Memory Awareness Support Team, providing free advice to the community about dementia. The Suffolks street fair was a tremendous success with the home taking a stand for the first time, opening our doors and inviting visitors to view the home first hand. With the home running the Dementia Lead Worker programme across all our homes, this has made us ideally placed to talk with great knowledge to our families. The fact we run the Dementia Lead Worker programme has enabled us to communicate effectively and knowledgeably to family members. St Faith s Nursing Home With more nurses on duty than any other home in, St Faith s prides itself on leading the way in nursing and dementia care. We moved the dining room to a much larger part of the building giving all our residents the opportunity for a full dining experience and to spend time with their families in a relaxed environment. Activities take place every day, the favourite still being the mum and toddler group where residents enjoy the company of many young children running through the home! Other Achievements Our training is the most intensive in the county and we continue to lead the field with our induction programmes. The culture we foster is one of teamwork, togetherness and support whenever needed. Our initiatives to further develop training programmes are coming to fruition as the plan to offer apprenticeships and qualifications based on our high standards progresses.
Looking to the future... We continue to be the largest provider of social care in and one of the largest in the county. There are financial pressures, but we do not let this compromise our ethos of providing the very best in elderly care. Far from it, we work closely with the local authorities to see how we can do more to help. Our main objectives for 2015 are to: Expand the work and impact of the charity county-wide Develop a strategy to promote our work to a wider audience Actively promote MAST and a more visible community presence Explore fundraising opportunities to help meet our objectives Talk to trusts, donors and other charities - using the funds to provide more activities Retain our staff through continuous development and training Develop our brand of accredited training Staff & Fundraising Staff It is only right to thank all of our amazing staff who provide love and care to our residents on a daily basis. Their compassion and dedication is humbling. The reason we are a successful care charity is because of our staff, and we value them immensely. We are actively moving towards the Living Wage and our Board of Trustees is committed to this, along with providing more opportunities for training as we achieve our Employer of Choice benchmark. Fundraising As a registered charity, Lilian Faithfull depends on the generosity of its supporters to go above and beyond the level of care provided through fee income. Lilian Faithfull offers a range of social and leisure activities, and provides a higher ratio of staff to residents than most other care homes in addition to spending more on nutritional food. Donations and grants are also needed to help us maintain and repair the wonderful historical buildings that our residents enjoy. We are extremely grateful to the following trusts for their very kind support during 2014: Evans Adland Charitable Trust Elizabeth Finn Care Waitrose Community Fund Rest Harrow Trust Spirax Sarco RAF Benevolent Fund Royal Agricultural Benevolent Fund Provincial Grand Lodge of Gloucester St Andrew Society Charitable Trust We are also indebted to Ladies College, which very kindly provides pupil volunteers who spend time building friendships with many of our residents. This inter-generational mixing can be incredibly inspiring for young people. Many older people have led exceptional lives of service, especially during the war, and their tales of heroism and stoicism can be truly awe-inspiring for those who have been fortunate enough to grow up in more peaceful times. What Legacy Will You Leave? Lilian Faithfull Homes is forever indebted to a number of local supporters and past residents who have remembered our charity in their will. Some legators have specified how they wanted their gift to be spent (such as providing a new piece of equipment for the home they enjoyed living in, or a staff outing as a way of saying thank you ). Others have left a more general legacy for the benefit of the charity to use at its discretion. However you want to help, we promise that every penny we receive from your legacy will be used to provide a Home for Life for future generations. If you can remember Lilian Faithfull Homes in your will (after you ve taken care of your friends, family and loved ones) your legacy will be a gift that will have a positive impact for years to come The first home opened (later to become Faithfull House) 1969 Astell Residential Home opened 1974 St Faith s Nursing Home opened 2012 Dowty House Residential Home joined Lilian Faithfull group
Accounts Stability is the bedrock of the charity and as of last year the bulk of our money (73 per cent) is spent on food and staff. This is considerably more than most other care providers, but we feel they are both absolutely essential - happy care workers provide the social support that is vital for good mental health, and good nutrition is fundamentally important for optimising physical health. Lilian Faithfull is in the fortunate position of owning all of its buildings, which provides an extra level of security for the charity and keeps operating costs down. In 2014 we invested over 535,000 in capital projects, all directly benefiting our residents. We keep our support costs at 6.2% of income, demonstrating that we put all our funds to looking after our residents and run a very lean efficient charity.
