2013 Social work internship placements I GO STUDENT TRAVEL CHILD WELFARE KENTON ON SEA/BUSHMANS/KLIPFONTIJN/MARSELLE
Looking for a. Social Work internship in South Africa Here are the available registered placements available in South Africa, in the little Village called Kenton-on-Sea in the Eastern Cape. Below is the Description of Child Welfare, the main Social Work organization and below that will be each registered internship placement for your viewing. Following that will be two Nursing/Old age homes which are individually registered but will still fall under the Supervision of Child Welfare. pag. 1
Child Welfare Child Welfare South Africa: Kenton/Bushmans is a registered Non- Governmental Organisation in South Africa. There are well over 300 Child Welfare offices around South Africa. Our Provincial Office is situated in Port Elizabeth and our National Office / Head Office is situated in Johannesburg. This particular organisation services the general communities of Kenton-On-Sea and Bushmans River Mouth. We are currently the only service provider rendering professional social work services to children between the ages of 0 and 13 in this area. Our core business is Child Protection Services which involves a number of services including foster care placements, adoptions, child abuse / neglect investigations, community awareness, community upliftment, family support services, counselling work, therapy etc. We are responsible for running and managing a number of community projects in our area and rely heavily on community involvement and support in order to bring about effective and positive change in our communities. While the Department of Social Development (Government Social Workers) are responsible for rendering services within the communities alongside our office, we are of the opinion that their current service level is not where it should be and for this reason, the private sector i.e. our office and other similar NGO s perform a valuable and incredibly important role in our communities. Currently at the underprivilieged, community schools there are NO SPORTS PROGRAMMES / TEACHERS / COACHES /EDUCATORS providing services to the children. This has always been of great concern to us and there is definitely a need for assistance in this aspect of the children s lives. Placements that are available through child welfare are: Social Care Workers for The Disabled (Any level) Specialised Child Care Worker (Any level) Community Worker (Any level) Sport & Exercise Coordinator / Educator Sport & Exercise Coordinator / Trainer / Coach pag. 2
Uviwe Activity Centre As an organisation we realised that there were far too many children in the community of Ekuphumleni that once school had closed for the day, had very little to do. The idea of an activity centre was born and this idea has grown from strength to strength. A property was identified within the community and purchased. A number of renovations have taken place and the idea is that children will be able to attend the centre during the afternoons and access the following services: homework club, reading club; educational games / toys; puzzle groups, etc; The centre will be well supervised and will function as a safe environment in which the children can learn and grow as individuals within their respective community. Family outreach will also form part of the planned activities for the centre. Social Work services will also be on offer to the children and their families at the centre. Students will be able to draw on their creativity and initiative and come up with various ways in which to stimulate the children that attend the centre. Many of the children come from unstable homes where family life is often characterised by neglect, alcohol abuse and extreme poverty and therefore social work services may need to be rendered to both the child concerned and his/her family. Specialised Child Care Worker (Any level) Community Worker (Any level) pag. 3
Sinethemba Health Care Centre for The Disabled This project is situated within the Marselle Community and currently renders services to a number of children between the ages of 6 and 18. All the children in attendance are disabled and have very specific special needs. Their disabilities include sight and speech disabilities as well as Down Syndrome. A number of the children also present with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. The project is still in its infancy phase and the volunteers require a great deal of outside support in order to provide a daily meal and a safe place for the children within which to learn and develop. An internship would involve a number of tasks including: Supportive services to both children and care workers at centre; Research on various disabilities children may have; Sharing of information / skills development of care workers; Upliftment / empowerment of care workers; Planning and implementation of productive / effective systems and procedures; Assistance with / implementation of appropriate activities for children with various needs; Family outreach work networking with families of children at the centre to provide support and guidance in terms of caring for the children within the family. Social Care Workers for The Disabled (Any level) pag. 4
Ikamva Lesizwe Combined School For social work students: Ikamva Lesizwe Combined School is situated with the community of Ekuphumleni. It is a government funded school and relies heavily on community support and involvement in order to run an efficient and effective educational facility. There is however a lack of funding currently from the government and basic needs such as text books, desks, qualified teachers and various other important items of equipment are lacking. There are currently no fixed school counselling services and because many of the children come from unstable family homes characterised by alcohol abuse and neglect one can imagine that there is a great need for pupil support services. The waiting list for learners in need of counselling is a lengthy one and the school is finding it impossible to cope with the back log. Many of the children require individual supportive services, family outreach services and educational support and currently have no stable support in their lives whatsoever. The school would welcome student support and it is certain that if one is successful with their application this placement would be an incredibly meaningful and beneficial not only for the student but also for the learners at the school. Applicable for which studies for Social work Specialised Child Care Worker (Any level) pag. 5
Ikamva Lesizwe Combined School For sport & exercise students: Government funding for sports training at the school has come to an end. Members of the wider community took it upon themselves to attempt to run an ad-hoc sports service for the children but were unable to continue due to lack of support. The children currently have NO ADDITIONAL SPORTS TRAINING at school and this is definitely not conducive to the schooling system producing happy, well-rounded, athletic individuals. The children have very little to do in the afternoons and therefore often get up to mischief and land themselves in trouble with the law from a very young age. Exposing children to effective sports activities and teams would contribute towards making a small difference in the lives of these children. Possible students who were successful in their application to work at the school would be responsible for implementing, monitoring and constantly assessing the progress of a sports timetable at the school. It would involve a great deal of work that would ultimately prove to be a life-changing project not only for the learners at the school but also for the intern him or herself. Sport & Exercise Coordinator / Educator Sport & Exercise Coordinator / Trainer / Coach pag. 6
Nompucuko Combined School For social work students: Nompucuko Combined School is situated with the community of Marselle. It is a government funded school and relies heavily on community support and involvement in order to run an efficient and effective educational facility. There is however a lack of funding currently from the government and basic needs such as text books, desks, qualified teachers and various other important items of equipment are lacking.
