Trained in qualitative research methods and discourse analysis; recruited participants, conducted in- depth interviews and focus groups in Spanish, translation and transcription. (fieldwork conducted in New York City) Conducted in- depth interviews for a research study on the effects of Welfare Reform on the Dominican community in New York City. Second Language Acquisition in a Global Society (University of Wisconsin, Madison, 2010) Presented a paper Exploring the Many Englishes of a Global City: A Case Study of Language Learning in Plurilingual Contexts Grants and Awards STARTALK 2015 Program Grant Awarded 90,000 to fund an Urdu- language program for a community- based organization that works with Pakistani- American youth in Brooklyn. This program will train teachers and students to become Citizen folklorists and collect and digitally preserve and disseminate cultural practices in the community. The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF) Awarded a doctoral dissertation grant of $4,000 in New York City s Mayor s Office of Adult Literacy Awarded a grant of $5,000 for a Special Project from the We Are New York. The grant funded a 9- week class that combined ESOL and drama activities. Students then created, wrote and shot a DVD that was used to promote the organization s work and tell their personal stories. CUNY Language Immersion Program Awarded a grant of $3,000 to develop a curriculum entitled Cultures at the Crossroads. The curriculum consists of three content- based units that integrate ESL, writing, and academic skills with social sciences. The three units cover immigration to the Lower East Side, conflicts between Native Americans, Spanish, and the U.S. in the Southwest, and music of the Caribbean. The curriculum is housed online and used by instructors of an intensive, content- based ESL bridge to college program. Documentary: Admissions: Student Stories from Undocumented America Co- producer, writer and researcher (June 2009 present) of a documentary about the experiences of four undocumented students in higher education entitled Admissions. Awarded Best Film by the American Educational Research Association Amateur Film Competition (2013). Selected for the 2012 Oaxaca Film Festival and the Boston International Latino Film Festival 2012, and screened at various venues throughout New York, nationwide and internationally.
