1 DPH Weekly Updates Dear Colleagues, This weekend we welcome the "unofficial" start to summer in New England! But despite our thoughts of summer and vacation, school nurses are keeping very busy! We've had a wonderful time meeting with so many of you across the state over the past week! Last Thursday we met with school nurses in Plymouth at the Medication Administration and Delegation workshop; on Friday over 300+ school nurses and other school health personnel were in Worcester to discuss the opioid epidemic in our state; Monday we were in Westfield to meet with school nurses across the western part of the state to discuss implementation of SBIRT in our schools and then on Tuesday, over 175 school nurses met to share promising practices in school nursing practice! What exciting events...and thank you to all who participated for attending these professional development opportunities! While we are out of the office, please remember to contact your Regional Consultants for any assistance you might need. As a reminder, their contact information is listed below: Region Name Office Phone Cell Phone Central Lee Waingortin , ext lwaingortin@hudson.k12.ma.us Metrowest Patty McCaffrey patriciamccaffrey@k12.waltham.ma.us Northeast Lisa Cross elarsencross@framingham.k12.ma.us Southeast Ann Klaver annmarieklaver@bpsma.org West Diane Colucci- Hechtd colucci- hechtd@sps.springfield.ma.us Therese Blain blaint@sps.springfield.ma.us One final note: as Dr. Ruth Potee encouraged us last week in her presentation at that Opioid in Schools Conference, we are interested in ensuring that ALL school nurses have access to naloxone (Narcan) for
2 nasal administration in your schools. We encourage you to contact your Regional Consultants (listed above) to provide this professional training (training by community responders is not considered sufficient for professional nurses). If there has been challenges to allowing school nurses to have access to this medication for administration in your school system, please let us know what these challenges are we are encouraging ALL schools to have ready access to this life saving medication just as we continue to do for epinephrine. Thank you! Enjoy the long holiday weekend.and please take time to honor our deceased soldiers and veterans who served so bravely so that we might enjoy the freedoms we have today. 5 From the MDPH Immunization Program: Please forward to pertinent colleagues within your institution: As you probably know, measles continues to occur in the U.S. largely due to importation. In 2015 there has been a large outbreak associated with the Disney theme park in California, with 117 confirmed cases, mostly likely initiated by a visitor to the US with measles or a returning traveler who contracted the illness while out of the country. The recent confirmation of a case of measles in Massachusetts in a visiting unvaccinated teenage exchange student from Western Europe, and associated exposure of over 700 people, highlight the importance of school immunization requirements. The student became infectious with measles very shortly after arriving in the United States. It is too early to know whether there will be any secondary cases as the result of this imported case. A number of exposed individuals have been quarantined for 21 days, resulting in missed days of work, exclusion from daycare, cancellation of plans to attend important events, and stress for those exposed who had pre-existing health concerns. Please ensure that your school is aware of these immunization requirements, and make them a formal part of any international exchange program at your school. Massachusetts regulations specify the immunizations required of students before admission to school (105 CMR : IMMUNIZATION OF STUDENTS BEFORE ADMISSION TO SCHOOL). These regulations (see below and attached) include any individual from another county attending or visiting classes or educational programs as part of a formal academic visitation or exchange program. Student shall mean any individual attending, or enrolled or registered to attend, a pre-school program as defined in 105 CMR , kindergarten through 12th grade in a public or private school, or a postsecondary institution, as defined in 105 CMR , provided the educational program is offered either on or off-site in Massachusetts. The term student shall also include any individual from another country attending or visiting classes or educational programs as part of a formal academic visitation or exchange program. These regulations apply to all such visiting students, even if their program is for a short duration. For questions about vaccine preventable diseases, please call the Division of Epidemiology and Immunization at , and ask to speak to an epidemiologist or public health nurse.
6 More information about school requirements and vaccination can be found at Our recent Clinical Measles Alert (April 30, 2015) can be found at From Adaptive Sports New England: Summer 2015 Paralympic Experience Summer 2015 Paralympic Experience Saturday, June 20 12:00-4:00 PM Newton North High School 457 Walnut Ave Newton Youth and adults who have physical disabilities or visual impairments are invited to join more than 25 Massachusetts adaptive and inclusive sport programs at the Paralympic Experience on June 20 at Newton North High School. Participants will be able to try new sports including track & field, tennis, basketball, softball/baseball, soccer, rowing, and golf. Introductory, short, drop- in clinics in these sports will focus on individuals who are blind/visually impaired, who ambulate with a mobility impairment, and who self- propel in a manual wheelchair. Many co- host organizations will also have information on their programs that serve individuals with other disabilities. Local Olympians and Paralympians will be on hand to assist with clinics and to celebrate Olympic Day. Information will also be available on MIAA inclusion initiatives for high school student athletes who have physical or visual disabilities. Free and open to the public. Pre- registration strongly recommended at Contact events@adaptivesportsne.org for more information or call From UMASS Lowell: Concussion Prevention & Diagnosis Workshop June 2-3, 2015 UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center Lowell, MA Hosted by: UMass Lowell and UMass Medical School
7 UMass Lowell and UMass Medical School are hosting the Concussion Prevention and Diagnosis Workshop at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center on June 2-3, The workshop will bring together a diverse audience with a collective wealth of knowledge and will facilitate discussions about the current state of the knowledge with respect to the sources, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of concussions. The objectives of the workshop will be to identify research gaps that currently exist in concussion research and determine future research paths that will be able to provide immediate and long- term solutions to the concussion epidemic. We also expect the workshop to facilitate the establishment of new cross- disciplinary working teams. Participants are expected to include those researching and practicing engineering, biomechanics, medicine, neuroimaging, athletic training, coaching, rehabilitation, policy and governance. The unique and key aspect of this workshop is that we are bringing together the full spectrum of disciplines to identify the critical research gaps that exist between them. We thank the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center and Lowell General Hospital for sponsoring this workshop. Web Registration is available and we hope that you and your colleagues will be able to join us for this cross- disciplinary workshop. Please pass this along to your colleagues and others in your organization who are working towards the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of concussions. More information about the workshop is available at Workshop/default.aspx. Please contact Patrick_Drane@uml.edu with any questions.
