2 Highlights from April» Demand in the permanent market increases slightly this month - Increase in most of the 16 sectors that we report on» Contract market demonstrates volatile demand - Big falls and losses in April, however there is a small drop in demand overall» roles see a sharp rise across both markets as financial year begins» s and also show relatively large increases in vacancies» Contract market grew slightly during April - Over half of the 16 sectors grew - Only has more vacancies than this time last year» Big difference in the one year on landscape - Permanent market has higher demand but would be a lot higher without some 3 large falls - Contract market depressed losing one in six vacancies» Significant growth for East Anglia in both permanent and contract market during April As we head into summer the IT staffing market shows a in direction, from temporary and contract lead recruitment towards permanent hires. The demand for permanent recruitment showed growth both on month, and year. While contract dipped a little on month, it dropped significantly year on year. This can be down to companies feeling increasingly confident about their long term business prospects, consequently moving to permanent hires as a result. What the survey doesn t show is the increasing disconnect between clients expectations of candidates abilities (often driven by their highly skilled and highly paid incumbent contractors) and the quality of candidates actively looking for new permanent positions. This disconnect has meant that while the number of permanent positions grows, the number of hires has not grown at the same rate. If this trend continues, it is expected that the percentage of hires to roles will start to increase, as companies need to recruit becomes imperative and hiring expectations become aligned to the market. While a mixed picture, the IT staffing market remains comparatively buoyant, and the competition for the best candidates becomes increasingly fierce. The biggest vacancy jump was in the sector, followed by at over 10%. Year on year the permanent market has performed relatively well, with this month being generally buoyant. and performed the best overall. A number of sectors have demonstrated positive growth: IT security, s and have all increased the number of vacancies during the last month and last year. These areas can often be viewed as precursors to growth in the wider IT market. Expansion in these sectors also suggests that businesses are investing in projects with long term growth potential..co.uk

They are:, and. Certain sectors also display unusually high levels of demand within the permanent market. Web Developers and Software Engineers all have a significantly higher percentage of the permanent market than the overall average. Web developers and IT Managers are in much higher demand in the permanent market..co.uk

Increases of more than 10% were seen in, and roles. Regional Analysis London and the South East produce the two largest markets, and the bulk of overall IT recruitment demand. Between them they account for over half of all vacancies. This is true across both the permanent and contract markets, however London produces an even larger portion of the contract market. London, on its own, had nearly 40% of all contract vacancies in the UK during April. London also displays a prevalence towards roles in Business Intelligence, and s compared to the rest of the UK. This is not surprising as roles like this will tend to be based centrally for large organisations and these central locations are more likely to be in London. s are also unusually in demand in Scotland, this is likely to be for the same reason and if a breakdown for the Edinburgh/Glasgow band was available, it would suggest that these roles are heavily offered there. Application analysts are also in demand in Scotland. This biggest demand spike that was found was in East Anglia. 25% of the demand for Technical Authors was here during April when the area only exhibits 5% of the market demand. Clients recruiting this role in this area may expect to pay a premium. East Anglia also has a high demand for Software Testers. Other interesting demand spikes within regions are: South East: Technical Author, and South West: and Manager West Midlands: System Analyst and Technician Wales: North East: System Administration North West: Yorkshire & Humberside:.co.uk
