2 Page 2 The Kissimmee Valley Gazette April 30, 1909 St. Cloud Historical Series Two Thousand Settlers Will locate on Old Soldiers Colony Within the Year This week, an important land deal was made in Kissimmee, by which the Seminole Land and Investment Co. of Washington, DC purchased 35,000 acres of land in the Kissimmee Valley-that includes the St. Cloud plantation, made famous in the Disston day. The tract lies six miles east of Kissimmee, in what is known as the Kissimmee artesian basin, artesian water being found in depths of 100 to 130 feet, while the ordinary wells strike it from 15 to 20 feet. A town site named St. Cloud has been located on the St. Cloud plantation and lots are or will shortly be on sale. The land was purchased for the purpose of locating a colony of old soldiers, who can no longer stand the rigors of northern climates and see a mild and balmy temperature in which to spend the remnant of their days. The land is cut up into 5 acres tracts and includes a 25 x 100, sic 150, town site lot, for the small sum of $100, sic $50, which seems reasonable that no doubt sales will be rapid. The Osceola County folks are feeling very jubilant over the prospect of the great benefit this colony movement will be. They calculate on an addition of at least 2,000 new settlers on the St. Cloud plantation within the year. Arcadia Champion
