The Open Road Think Strategy over Tactics
The Strategy Figure out WHAT you want to do, then find someone else who got THERE, and ask them HOW they did it.
The Role of Social Media Social Media should help you keep track of and maintain your connections. Social Media is complement to networking, not a substitute for networking.
Planning Your Trip Step One: Present a Good Image Clean up any profiles you already have Remove any embarrassing photographs Remove any negative posts Adjust the privacy settings to control what friends show Use lists to manage how your contacts posts appear on your page Check your spelling and grammar Do not swear Use a photo that clearly shows your face
Planning Your Trip Step Two: Get Connected Get on The Big 3 if you are not already Add people you already know Scroll through each new contact s list of contacts for other people you know Join 3-5 groups on LinkedIn Look for alumni and local groups Post or reply to 3-5 discussion threads per week Connect with the people who post in those threads
Planning Your Trip Step Three: Keep Connecting Set a monthly goal for number of posts and contacts per month Look for ways to contribute value to your network help connect others Invest time into your network Periodically, make small adjustments to your profiles so they are always up to date
Remember... Networking is a form of investment. If you want a return, you need to commit time and energy to growing your network. Start early for the best results, but be patient. If you make demands too early, the people in your network will be less interested in helping you.
Side Trip: Twitter If you want to use Twitter, consider using Tweetdeck or Hootsuite to manage your account. Use Buffer.com to schedule content. Use Canva.com to make graphic images for tweets. Use a hashtag in every tweet.
Side Trip: LinkedIn Complete enough profile items to move to All-Star user status Write your profile in third-person, repeating your name Send personalized invites Use the Evernote and LinkedIn apps to scan business cards
