2 In reading this marking scheme, the following points should be noted: Candidates are not required to give the exact wording of the answers proposed in the marking scheme. If the correct sense is given they can obtain full marks for their answer. Round brackets indicate material which is not considered essential in order to gain full marks. A forward slash (/) is used to indicate that the word or expression which precedes it is awarded the same marks as the word or expression which follows it. Answers separated by a forward slash cannot therefore be taken as different answers. N.B. In all sections of the examination the answers given on the marking scheme should not be considered as the only possible answers that may be accepted. Alternative expressions, phrases and words which convey a similar meaning to those on the published marking scheme are also acceptable. 2

Things we learn from the novel in general: He is despised by his own superiors. He detests Arciprete Rosello. He is an art lover. He is not a saintly priest but still remains one because it suits him. He is cynical and pragmatic. Three points are required, covering both the passage and the book as a whole. (20 marks 7+7+6) 7

The following points should be mentioned: 3 A 1 Corruption (avvocato Rosello) Omertà: most people know what is going on, but they do not talk about it. Hypocrisy (arciprete Rosello) Conforming to a sick society (vedova Manno) 3 A 2 Luisa: manipulative, uses her femininity to influence men; she is corrupt and evil she causes Laurana s tragic downfall Laurana s mother: possessive and domineering Main cause of her son s naiveté. Vedova Manno: a minor character that is symbolic of Sicilian society because she accepts situations she does not believe in. 3 B 1 Fadigati: At the outset he is a highly respected and popular doctor. His sexual tendencies are overlooked. His open relationship with Delilier causes his downfall. 3 B 2 Narrator is a Jew, Fadigati is a homosexual. Both are the targets of intolerance. (Signora Lavezzoli; Fascisti stop talking when they see the narrator) 9
10 SECTION C WRITING (100 MARKS) For good points (idiom or structure) put a Quality NOT quantity will be rewarded. Simple, correct, good Italian will be rewarded. Variety of tenses and phrases, rich vocabulary, link words and idiomatic expressions should be rewarded. In C1 and C2 where the marks awarded for content and communication are 7 or less, language will be marked out of 5. In C3 where the marks awarded for content and communication are 12 or less, language will be marked out of Written composition linked to the comprehension (journalistic) passage. (25 marks) Content and communication: 15 marks. Use the descriptors in Appendix 2. Language 10 marks N.B. It is not enough to copy or cut and paste sentences from the text. 2. Guided Composition (25 marks) Candidates must not produce something learnt by heart and off the point. They do not need to use all the words or phrases given. Maximum number of words/phrases/points omitted: 2. What is required are simple, well-structured sentences. Content and communication: 15 marks. Use the descriptors in Appendix 2. Language: 10 marks 3.
